Kayelyn's Word Challenge - Makebate

Prompt: Kayelyn’s Weekly Word Challenge - Makebate

Definition: a person who causes contention or discord.

~ooO Makebate Ooo~

No one noticed a slender red-head slipping into the Reception Hall. She was pretty with blue-green eyes dressed in a black silk gown accented with white speckled fur around the shoulders.

Ookamiko Ayame had sworn not to return to Japan after she had left six decades ago, hurting from Kouga’s last rejection. She had been travelling off the grid and had not received the invitation for the formal marking ceremony until it was too late to go. She had considered just sending a gift and well-wishes but decided it was not wise to offend the Western Lord. Ayame liked causing trouble, but she liked staying alive better. So here she was, attending the ningen wedding reception, recognizing very few youkais and hanyous in the guests, most of whom she’d prefer to avoid.

She grabbed a champagne flute from a passing waiter and sipped wishing it was stronger. Ayame knew she had no right to begrudge the bride. It was not Kagome’s fault that every male she chased chose/preferred other females. It was not Kagome’s fault that none of Ayame’s relationships lasted beyond a few decades and one pup. But Ayame couldn’t help but feel angry and hurt that everyone was finding love, everyone but her.

It had been like that for the last three centuries. Ayame was not truly hardened and malicious like Naraku but she found comfort in causing discord in other relationships. It was her whispers that reached the ears of everyone of Kouga’s mates and paramours, pointing out ugly facts and weakening the foundations. Ayame did not see herself as being evil and destructive. She knew if the mating bond was true then her words would never have weakened the relationships. In facts her whispers tended to strengthen a true mating. But all of actions had not helped Ayame find one who’d be true to her and her alone.

Right now she was feeling very lonely and bitter but she knew better than to try her usual tricks on Kagome and Sesshoumaru. Kagome was too loyal, too faithful. And Sesshoumaru, well, he’d kill her once he tracked down the source of the rumours.

But that didn’t mean she couldn’t have her fun in other ways.
