Skye's Prompts - Dreams

Prompt: Priestess Skye’s Prompts – Dreams (req’d 700, actual 870)

~ooO Dreams Ooo~

“Kagome-chan!”

Kagome faltered and turned towards the familiar cheery voice.

“Rin? Oh my, it is you!” Immediately the miko veered away from her original goal and hurried towards the voice. “Rin? Where are you!?”

And then an unexpectedly large form rushed straight at Kagome and into her arms.

Kagome did not flinch or recoil from the impact. She ignored the possibility of stains and simply wrapped her arms tightly around the sobbing woman and cried herself. They stood like that for several minutes before Rin regained enough control to pull away.

Kagome took her time examining the familiar but now older face. She could see traces of the little girl in the faintly rounded features, the deep velvety doe brown eyes. However now the silky dark hair was pulled back with jewelled barrettes and the longer strands twisted in a simple knot and secured by a pair of chopsticks. Rin looked like she could be her sister, more mature with broader hips and fuller curves but it only emphasized she was a woman.

Then it hit Kagome. Her little girl was a woman! A mother! A grandmother! She was a great-grandmother! It made Kagome dizzy. Now it was Kagome’s turn to tear up and sob.

“I’m so sorry Rin-chan! I’m so sorry! I should have tried harder. Found another way to deal with the Shikon!”

Rin was very confused and worried. “Kaa-san, stop it, it’s okay. I know you wanted to stay with us. You didn’t want to leave us.”

“But I did!” Kagome’s voice was filled with self-loathing. “What kind of mother chooses to leave her children behind? How can she call herself a mother?”

Rin cupped Kagome’s cheeks and made her meet her eyes. “A mother who loves her children and family dearly. One willing to sacrifice her own happiness, her own dreams, if it would keep everyone else safe and alive.”

Kagome brushed away her tears and struggled to control her hiccupping sobs. “When did you become so wise, sweetie?”

“When I became a mother,” Rin answered solemnly. “I discovered I too would do anything if it meant saving my children. Even if it would destroy me in the process.”

Kagome nodded and examined her adoptive daughter more closely. “You’ve grown so big, you’ve become so beautiful.” Tears began to flood blue eyes. “I’ve missed so much! Of your life. Of Shippo’s life.” Blindly she reached out and grabbed her mate’s sleeve, pulling him close enough to lean heavily against him. “After we became mates I had hope. After Naraku was defeated I had always thought we would live together, raise Rin and Shippo and our own children,” she whispered into his shoulder. “But it didn’t happen.”

“You may not have been there while they were growing up but you were always in our hearts and minds,” Sesshoumaru said gently. “Kagura was most insistent. She drove away female interlopers seeking to take your place. She kept your memory alive and fresh when I was grieving and unable to do so.”

“And I told Chichi-ue that we only had to wait. If we were patient and careful we would see you again,” Rin chimed in with a bright smile. “And Chichi-ue is very patient.”

Kagome choked back on a laugh. Oh yes, Sesshoumaru had the patience of Job when he was set on a particular goal.

“It is easy when you know that your heartfelt desire will become reality,” Sesshoumaru murmured against her hair, resting his hands against her stomach and pulling her against his front. She sighed and relaxed, allowing her body to sink into the planes of his.

Then she turned her attention to the other youkai standing just off to the side, watching and listening. He was attractive in a subdued manner, with shoulder-length light brown flecked with cream and chocolate. His eyes were an oddly bright yellow with wide round pupils and distinct striations radiating from the centre. His formal robes were also indistinct in varying shades of brown and cream with a unique pattern of feathers woven into the material.

Kagome smiled openly at him and was not surprised by the hesitant shy smile she gained in return.

“And correct me if I’m wrong, but you are Kyoumaki-san, right?”

“Chichi-ue told you!” Rin squealed, in joy or annoyance it was not quite clear.

Kagome giggled. “Sesshoumaru only told me you had mated an owl-youkai. He is standing close to you, his colouring reminds me of a snowy-owl, and his clothes have the same colours and are embroidered with feathers. He is either your mate or kin like a son.” She stroked Rin’s cheek. “As much as I’d love to meet your children I would want to meet your mate first, to see the one who caught your heart.” Her breath caught. “Tell me daughter, does he irritate and infuriate until you just want to hit him but instead you stalk away? Does he make you laugh and smile and want? Does he make your heart sing, your dreams come true?”

Kagome saw the answer in Rin’s bright face before it was even voiced. “Oh yes, Kaa-san.”

Kagome inclined her head. “Then I am most pleased to meet you Kyoumaki-san, mate of my heart-daughter.”

TBC…

AN: Not quite sure how this came about but I wanted Rin and Kagome to have a reunion as well.
