And then another thought came to her mind.

“Sesshoumaru?”

“Yes?”

It took a few moments for her to gather her courage. “What happened to Rin?”

To her surprise he chuckled softly. “Rin… Rin is alive and mated. She has lived in England with her mate for the last fifty years.”

Kagome quickly twisted and turned to face him. “She’s alive? And mated? To who?”

“His name is Kyoumaki, an owl-youkai.”

Her expression turned thoughtful.

“I don’t recognize the name,” she admitted.

“I would not expect you to. He is very scholarly. His clan are traditionally loremasters, record keepers for youkai Great Houses. They met when he began his mastery training with a relative who a member of my household. Fuyami was also Rin’s instructor and she was quick to unload the responsibility on Kyoumaki.” He frowned, a faintly displeased expression. “They became very close.”

Kagome was intrigued. “How sweet! A student teacher romance!” Then she herself frowned. “He didn’t take advantage of her did he?” she asked with a vaguely threatening expression.

Sesshoumaru snorted. “No. In fact if anything Rin was the one to pursue him.”

Kagome leaned back. “So brave,” she murmured. “It must have required a lot of courage to take the first step. I mean she was the female and ningen in an era that favoured males.”

Sesshoumaru looked down at her with a grave expression. “Yes. But Rin has never lacked the courage to walk the path she chooses.” He hesitated before adding. “She followed me when I held nothing but disdain for ningens.”

Kagome hummed, a soft sound of agreement as she cuddled up against Sesshoumaru.

“Does he love her?” she asked quietly.

“He treats her like a queen,” Sesshoumaru affirmed.

She considered the information “I’m surprised he accepted. I mean, being pursued by a ningen. Especially back then; there must have been a lot of resistance from his kin.”

“There was. It helped that Rin was my ward and recognized pack-daughter. And Kyoumaki was never the prideful sort.” A satisfied smile curved his lips. “And no one dared to say a word against the match after Rin bore their first child.”

“Why?”

“Their eldest child, Haruna, she is essentially a pureblood youkai.”

Kagome sat up right sharply to see her mate’s face. He was serious. “How?” she asked.

“There has been a lot of speculation. Bokusenou theorized it has something to do with their complete commitment to, and acceptance of, each other. It stabilized their mating bond and made it a true two-way balanced path.” He reached out and placed his hand over the lower curve of her stomach. “There is a possibility it will be the same for us, because our bond is also two-way and balanced.”

She reached out to touch his cheek. “And if it isn’t?” she asked seriously. “What if our children are hanyou?”

“I will love them because they are ours,” he vowed cupping her cheek.

She exhaled sharply and blinked back tears. “I love you,” she whispered.

“And I love you.”
