Riku Ryuu's Prompt - Mask

~ooO Mask Ooo~

Kagome frowned faintly as she stared across the park. It was pretty busy and full of children and mothers, impromptu football games and Frisbee contests. They were so happy it made her hurt because she wasn’t. She longed to be back at the shrine, holed up in her safe private room, where she didn’t have to wear a mask and pretend she was happy, or at the least not horribly depressed. But she owed it to her family and friends to at least make an effort and at least try.

“Kagome, is everything all right with you?”

Kagome blinked and turned to the young woman sharing the park bench.

“I’m sorry Eri, I’m horrible company.”

Eri shook her head vehemently. “No! I know you’ve been really down and reluctant to see any of us! Until now.”

Kagome bit her lip. She didn’t know what to tell her friend. It wasn’t like she could tell her the truth, that she was trapped in the future and separated from her daiyoukai mate.

“It’s Sesshoumaru,” she said finally. “He’s out of the country and I miss him terribly.”

Eri’s expression softened. “Oh Kagome…” Then her expression turned resolute. “Do you call or e-mail him? Use Skype?”

Kagome did not want to lie any more than she already had. “He’s in a remote area. They don’t have easy access to modern communications.” Her eyes filled with tears before she added, “I miss him horribly.”

“Oh Kagome.”

And then Kagome found herself wrapped up in a strong comforting embrace. It wasn’t as steely and soothing as one of Sesshoumaru’s hugs but it was nice.

Tears flowed freely down her cheeks. The truth was, she didn’t know if she would ever see her mate again. She had never felt any youkai in the present. InuYasha hadn’t smelt or sensed them either. Sure there had been the odd supernatural elements but no full-blown youkai or even hanyous.

Kagome dug her fingers into Eri’s back as she cried into the older girl’s shoulder. She prayed and begged the Kamis to grant her this one wish, for Sesshoumaru to find her. She refused to believe he was dead. He was too strong and skilled to succumb to a lesser opponent, and all were lesser compared to Sesshoumaru. He had to be alive!

Then doubts began creeping in. Did he still care for her? Did he still remember her? Or had he abjured his vows and taken another as mate? No! She refused to believe he would dishonour his vows. She just had to keep faith.

TBC…

AN: Ok then. Going forward this story is out the valley of depression.
