The rush of purpose brought on by guilt did not last. Right now Kagome did not feel like leaving her room. In fact, she did not even feel like getting out of bed! She did her best to ignore the sounds from downstairs, Kaa-san’s familiar voice speaking to someone she hadn’t heard from in a while. She shifted minutely, curling on her side, tugging the blankets over her head, taking comfort from the artificial darkness.

The door opened and familiar soft footsteps approached.

“Kagome?”

Kagome was feeling so down she curled up tighter. She wanted to stay under her blanket forever. But Kaa-san wasn’t going to let her. The young woman blinked blearily and stared up into the bright light.

“Eri is here to see you so get up and make yourself presentable young lady,” she said sternly. “And if you don’t come down Eri will be coming come up!” Kagome shut her mouth. “You aren’t the only one hurting Kagome. We’re hurting for you also.”

The gentle reminder provided some impetus for the young woman. Slowly she rolled off the bed and stood up on trembling feet. Her muscles felt weak, limp like over cooked noodles. It took some effort to move but she managed to get to the bathroom. She didn’t have enough time for a bath but maybe washing her face and brushing her hair would help.
