Naraku’s half of the Shikon had not been the rest of the tama. There had been four shards missing but it did not take long to locate and secure them. Not without Naraku around to lay false trails and distract them.

Kagome glanced at the pink gleaming shard in her palm. It was the last shard. She could almost feel the vibrations in her bones. The Shikon longed to be whole again, to be restored. She could feel the spirits within yearning for freedom, for peace, to pass on, soft urgent voices whispering in her ears, urging her to make the right wish, to set things right.

“Can you hear it?” she asked, her voice catching on the last word.

They looked at her confused and puzzled, even the youkai.

It was a song only she could hear, a song that made her want to cry, music that only she could hear and feel, vibrating in her bones, resonating against her skin. Vaguely she wondered if this was what phoenix song felt like in the Harry Potter books. It was a melody that could move any audience to tears.

She looked around at her friends, her pack, her mate and children. She loved them. But she couldn’t deny what the Shikon, the spirits, Midoriko were asking of her. She placed the last shard against the small imperfection in the glowing tama and poured her powers into it. The Shikon responded and drew the shard within it and became whole once more. The song was demanding, pushing. The emotional maelstrom was so strong Kagome wanted to fall apart and sob.

Give me a moment, she screamed silently. The song subsided and retreated to a low thrum in the background.

She took the moment to look around, to take in her pack, eyes lingering on her children and her mate. Her mate… Oh Kami, I can’t do this, she thought frantically, I can’t leave him.

You must, Midoriko whispered, it is the only way to set things right.

And then Kagome did one of the hardest things one could ever do, voice a wish to set things right. Unfortunately setting things right would also tear her from her Feudal Era family, because she did not belong in the past.

She wept as she began fading, as they shouted frantically and tried to reach out and grab her. Rin and Shippo were in a panic.

“Kagome!” her mate was losing control. He must be feeling their bond thin and stretch as she was pulled back to her time.

“I love you. All of you!” she cried out but her eyes were locked with her mate’s. “Live good long happy lives,” she whispered before vanishing completely.

The moment she vanished Sesshoumaru let loose an enraged roar.
