Sesshoumaru was not the sort to laugh out loud, or display any other emotions openly. In fact he scorned others making such displays in public; well all but Kagome.

He loved seeing her smile, hearing her laugh, whether they were alone together or with the rest of the pack or even strangers. Because Kagome’s emotions were always genuine and true. As an inuyoukai Sesshoumaru could literally scent emotions – fear, lies, pain, rage – it was impossible to hide what was truly being felt. He had learnt to accept the adoration, lust, respect, awe, and even the fear, hate, anger, his opponents felt towards him, but the daiyoukai hated deception.

Kagome was a truly genuine creature. She said what was on her mind. She cried when she was sad. She laughed when she was happy. She smiled when she was pleased. There was never a trace of lies or deception in her scent. And she smiled and laughed without restraint in his presence. She genuinely wanted to be with him. Sesshoumaru had a great deal of experience in picking out grains of truth in the morass of deception and treachery that was youkai court alliances. He had a great deal of experience in being lied to. And he hated it. He hated dealing with liars who veiled their treachery with false claims.

Lying by omission was sometimes necessary and acceptable but blatantly stating falsehoods was unacceptable in his eyes. Sesshoumaru knew he was feared but given a choice between a fearful liar and one who was just fearful and terrified he preferred dealing with the fearful and terrified. Naraku’s penchant for deception and treachery made him the lowest among the low in Sesshoumaru’s eyes. And Kagome’s genuine heartfelt emotions lifted her to the highest levels in those same ranks.

Before Kagome, Rin was the daiyoukai’s only source of genuine positive emotions directed towards him. Rin loved and respected him with the adoration that could only be experienced child. Kagome loved, accepted, and respected him the way a proper mate and partner should: genuinely and whole-heartedly.

A faint smile curved his lips as he recalled a moment when his mate had laughed just so.
