Riku Ryuu's Prompt - Sand

She glared at both the ookami and the inu-hanyou in turns. “Both of you are absolutely clueless. You’re sticking your head in sand like an ostrich. You refuse to see the truth even when it is in front of your faces. You refuse to hear if you don’t like what is being said!”

“That’s not true!” Kouga snarled.

“How many times have I told you I’m not interested?!” Kagome yelled back. “How many times have I told you to go to Ayame. You made a promise to her and going back on it is dishonourable and disturbing to me. If you are so willing to break a promise to a princess of your own kind I can only see you turning on me once you have what you want. Which is the Shikon!” She gave him a hard look. “Not gonna happen Kouga!”

“What about my promise to Kikyo!” InuYasha said in a quiet angry voice.

Kagome shook her head. “Kikyo is dead. She is nothing more than grave soil and clay. If she were a living breathing woman who truly loved you I’d have given you my blessings ages ago! But she’s not! She wants to drag you into hell! She wants to kill you InuYasha!” She dashed away her tears. “What kind of person wants to kill the one they love? What kind of person wants the one they love to be miserable and unhappy?” she begged to know. And there was only one answer: a sick and depraved individual would.

The silence in the clearing was so thick one could almost cut it with a sword. Miroku coughed breaking the tension.

“Kagome-sama, what is an os-tri-chi-u?”

Kagome blinked and laughed. “Oh yeah, forgot you wouldn’t know.”

“What is it Kaa-san?” Shippo asked, determined to make his mother laugh and forget about things that made her unhappy and angry.

“An ostrich is a very large heavy bird that lives in a distant hot land. It’s taller than most humans, with long legs, a long flexible neck, and a round ball-like body. It’s wings are too small for it to fly but it can run really fast.” She giggled. “But it’s a very silly bird. When it sees danger it wants to hide like most creatures. But it doesn’t hide properly, it just buries its head in the sand. It thinks if it can’t see the enemy, then the enemy can’t see it. Of course most of its body is out of the same and very visible so it will get attacked.” She took a deep breath. “Anyways we have to get going. Kouga if you’re really interested in avenging your tribe meet us at the Western Stronghold in ten days. If you don’t show up we’ll assume you aren’t interested.”

The ookami opened his mouth and shut it at the inu-youkai’s hard look. If he spoke unwisely the big daiyoukai at Kagome’s side would cut him down without a second thought. The ookami nodded curtly and began running. He might have lost Kagome and the Shikon but he was determined to get his vengeance on Naraku and the wind-witch.
