She watched the children, to make sure they were really practicing and not goofing off, for a while. Satisfied, she turned her attention to her own lessons. She dug heavy textbooks, notebooks of lined paper, and a pencil case out of her yellow bag and began studying.

Unlike InuYasha, Sesshoumaru was content to sit beside her and watch or read along with her. Occasionally he asked questions to clarify what he just read. After three sub-sections and a page of questions she took a small break and sipped her cold green tea.

“I can’t attend regular school but kaa-san enrolled me in a home schooling program. If I keep up on my readings and studies I can write the tests and drop off the assignments whenever I go home. I’ll need to write the final exams at a school but that will just be a week at the end of the year,” she told him. “It’s not the same as attending regular school but I will be able to get my certificate and advance to the next level.”

Sesshoumaru nodded firmly. “Good. Acquiring knowledge is never a waste of time,” he told her ignoring the gawping, enraged look on the hanyou’s face and the pleased expressions on the monk and tajija.

She smiled brilliantly at him and leaned forward to rub her nose along his jaw line, a nuzzle signifying affection, loyalty, and trust in inu-youkai culture.

“That is why I respect you,” she murmured softly, though those of youkai lineage heard her clearly. “That is why I submit to you. Because you share my values.”

His eyes glowed, shimmered like molten gold, as he smiled faintly at her. He ignored the faint angry growls from the hanyou. The fool refused to accept that he had already lost. The miko was his.
