Kagome was half-way through her cup of tea when something caught her attention.

“Where is Rin-chan?” she asked tensely.

“She’s gone to catch some fish for breakfast,” Sango reassured her friend. “Kilala and Ah-Uh are with her.”

Kagome relaxed minutely and finished her tea before getting up to prepare miso soup. Once Rin came back with the fish they could bake it in the ashes and eat it with left over rice and miso soup.

“Are you okay with a late start?” she asked out loud though it was clearly directed at the daiyoukai. Everyone ignored InuYasha’s irate protests of how they were wasting time sitting around doing nothing and that they were just giving Naraku a head start.

“It would be beneficial. This Sesshoumaru sent several agents out to track down rumours of the Spider. There should be a few reports waiting at the shiro.”

“I’d like to replenish my supplies as well,” Sango said. “I need certain herbs that grow near my old village.”

“I will accompany Sango-sama,” Miroku announced.

Kagome hesitated. “I supposed the rest of us can wait in Edo village…”

“You will accompany this Sesshoumaru,” the daiyoukai announced and proceeded to ignore the protests and screams from InuYasha.

This was the scene Rin walked into carrying a string of freshly caught fish. Kagome hastily got up and hurried to her.

“Hello Rin-chan,” she said taking the string of fairly hefty fish. “Wow, this must have been really heavy to carry all the way from the river!” she told the little girl impressed.”

“Ah-Uh carried me back,” the little girl confessed shyly.

“And they were right to do so,” Kagome said warmly. “Why don’t I clean these and put these in the coals to bake? We can eat them for breakfast with the leftover rice and miso soup.” The miko was surprised when she didn’t get a bright cheery response. “Rin-chan? Is something wrong?”

The girl was staring at Kagome. To be more specific the white haori with white on red stylized sakuras at the shoulder and collar. And the red ribbon-collar around Kagome’s throat. Kagome blushed and fidgeted. She hadn’t expected this! How was she going to explain why she was wearing Sesshoumaru’s haori?

“I can explain—” she began.

“Is Kagome-chan Rin’s new kaa-san?” the little girl interrupted the miko’s stammering.

There was only one way to answer that. “If you want then yes.”

Rin nodded her head wildly. “Are you really?” she asked in a pleading tone. “You won’t leave Rin? You will stay with Sesshoumaru-sama and Rin forever and ever?”

Kagome hesitated. She had always been torn between the future and the past. But now that she was bonded, mated, to Sesshoumaru it would be doubly hard to leave. She doubted he would be willing to let her travel to a time and place he could not follow. But it didn’t mean she wouldn’t try to change his mind.

She cleared her throat. “Yes. I might have to leave for a few days to visit my family, for duty, but I will always come back. You are my family now.”

“Kaa-san never lies,” Shippo added drawing near. He had heard of the conversation and was more than ready to add his two-cents. “And when she goes I’ll be here to protect and play with you!”

Rin’s face bloomed into its usual bright cheery visage. “Yah! Let’s go play now!”

“Why don’t we play tag?” Shippo offered a suggestion.

“Tag?”

Shippo grinned. “It’s a game.  You’ll really like it. One person is It and he or she has to run and catch someone else, to tag another person. Then that person is It. I play it all the time with Kaa-san and Kilala! Tag’s lots of fun with lots of people.”

“And you can count me and Sango out,” Kagome said firmly. “We’re making breakfast.”

The ensuing game was lively and energetic, starting off with just Shippo, Rin, and Kilala. Ah-Uh joined after Jaken was dragged in by Shippo whacking the imp with his own Two-Headed staff.

Even as she kept an eye on the fire, the miko kept a close eye on the game of tag. Poor Jaken was It and she was pretty certain he would remain It. He was too slow and clumsy to catch the more agile youkai and youngsters.
