Chapter Forty-One: Lament

She awoke in a familiar position, her head cushioned by something unbearably soft. Blinking open her eyes, Kagome turned and looked for the taiyoukai to whom her usual makeshift bedding belonged to.

He was beside her, a clawed hand pressed to her tangled curls. She was surprised to see that they had not left the knoll above the battlefield.

“You fainted.” He murmured, his voice belied his lament at the circumstance. “I believe it may have been too much for you.”

Kagome blinked the drowsiness from her eyes and whispered, “It was me.”

Shaking his head, silver strands whispering in the wind, Sesshoumaru murmured solemnly, “It was her.” Confusion filled cerulean depths and he clarified, “She looks like you – but she is dead. I have encountered her only twice before and I do not know her story. It is the only reason I can discern as to why you think it was yourself.”

Kagome placed her head back down to the pelt and felt frustrated tears in her eyes, “I want to remember.”

A single tear gathered behind her closed eyes, moisture gathering on her lashes. Before it could slide down her cheek, a clawed finger caught it on its tip and Kagome’s eyes snapped open.

“And you will. Just not now… but soon. I will ensure it…” the taiyoukai paused, his citrine, cat-slit hues resolved, “I promise.”
