Chapter Twenty: Tender

Sesshoumaru didn’t sleep but he did rest. His rest was disturbed by the small miko whom jolted awake again and was beside him in seconds. He blinked wearily at her and her tears stained cheeks.

“What ails you, miko?” he rumbled quietly.

Kagome glanced up at him and shook her head, “H-he’s in pain.”

Sesshoumaru was almost tender when he brushed her bangs from her eyes, her tears invoking protective instincts within him because in a sense, she was but a child.

Removing mokomoko, Sesshoumaru placed it around her chilled form and indicated she lie beside him, “Sleep.” He murmured, “We will continue our search tomorrow.”

Sesshoumaru watched as she bedded down beside him, her tears streaming endlessly until sometime in the evening they stilled. Later found  Rin curled at the miko’s side, her hand touching his, “They have a strong bond.”

“Stronger than I imagined.” He admitted to his long time ward taking comfort in their joined hands. Rin long ago taught him the tenderness his father sought to teach him once. Rin hummed softly and soon followed Kagome in her dreams.

Staring at the duo something roared within him contented.

And Sesshoumaru contemplated the feeling well into the morning.
