Anata no Tame no Mono

Disclaimer: I do not own Inuyasha and or co. I do not make any money from writing this songfic. I write for pure enjoyment. Nor do I own the song by Hinder Thing for You

This happened to be a plunnie that came to me while listening to the song; that also inspired this songfic/oneshot.

A/N: Sesshomaru will not be called as such, as when you read the whole of this, you will understand, therefore will be known as “Maru”; and will totally be OC. Oh and he is completely human. Just a warning for you.

“THING FOR YOU” ~Hinder

Her best friend, Sango, was the one who dragged her out in the first place, and then she just up and left her. “Some friend,” she thought out loud, though no one could hear her over the loud music that was blaring from the speakers on stage. There was a little left in her glass, which she threw her head back and downed in one gulp, slamming the glass on the counter.

She turned around in her seat and looked at all the patrons of the club, watched as the people danced in groups, by themselves and with partners. She thought about her love at home, thinking how she should get back to him soon. After looking into the crowd for a few minutes, one face stood out, only because she recognized him from college; they had been college sweethearts. Though he was ten years older, he still looked just as handsome as she remembered. When she first caught sight of said man a whirlwind of emotions came flooding back into her mind body and heart; love, lust, friendship, companionship and compassion.

In college he wore his black hair in a long pony tail, tied with twine at the base of his neck. Now he wore a shorter version of the glory that used to be his pride and joy. She could tell that the scars on his cheeks and forehead were faded. He had also worked out, now his body mass had grown. She used to remember a slightly muscled Taisho Maru, but she liked what she saw now better.  He even had a goatee, and he was, in her opinion, one of a very few who could pull it off. She continued to look over him; he had looked like he just came from the office in his black dress pants paired with an equally black dress shirt, with no tie and a few buttons undone, and a brown leather jacket.

She knew that he had not seen her yet, so she stayed, not moved, in hopes that he might come over to talk to her. After a while of waiting and hoping, he had not even moved from his seat across the club. She was about to give up when he had happened to look over her and with the slightest eye movement, realized that he had recognized her instantly. He had gotten up, set his empty glass on the little coffee table, say goodbye to his companion and headed over to her.

By now, she knew she was completely wasted and needed to get home. But she also wanted to stay and catch up with Maru. She felt a little torn. She turned just before he had reached the bar to try to compose herself at least a little. She felt his hand on her lower back, and it felt so natural and right. “Kagome. How’ve you been?”

She looked over at him and smiled her sweetest smile and said, “I’ve been good, Maru. How about you?”

“I’ve been better.” He chuckled a little.

“What did you do to it?” She asked, reaching up to touch his hair.

He gave her a small smirk, one that only she knew. “I grew to realize that long hair was not professional.” He sat in the vacated seat beside her and ordered another beer.

“Well look at the big Mr. Taikun now.” She teased.

“Do you have someone waiting at home for you?”

She almost did a double take at his question, not sure if she thought she heard him right, when he gave her a blank stare, she knew that she had heard him right. “Outlandish much?”

“You didn’t answer my question.”

“Yes,” she answered hesitantly, and then continued more sure of her reply. “But I don’t mind being a little late.”

“Will he mind?”

“He might a little, but I don’t care.”

“You want to get out of here?”

“Sure.”

~*~*~

“This is a nice car. What is it?” Kagome said, clicking her seat belt to the clasp.

“BMW Z29. I had it imported.” Maru answered, doing the same and started the car.

“Must have cost a fortune.”

“Where do you want to go?” He asked while they were pulling out of the parking lot.

“What’s wrong with the bachelor pad?”

“It’s not much of a bachelor pad.”

“Mr. Popularity is Mr. Commitment?” She teased, but was also a little shocked.

“What about you, Miss Cheerleader? I’m surprised that you found someone that would take your bitchy bull shit.” He glanced over at her and gave her a wink as his lips formed into a smirk.

“Jerk.” She laughed.

“So you want to go have coffee? Have a late dinner?”

“Right now, I think it best if we just went to pay for a room for the night.”

“Now, that is a little eccentric, don’t you think?”

“I didn’t mean it like that, you pervert!”

“Ha, ha, neither did I. But you know you want to, don’t lie to yourself.”

“Hey, I may be whore but I am not a drunk,” she slurred drunkenly, realizing that she had reversed two keywords in the sentence.

He laughed. “Why don’t you try rephrasing that?”

“You know what I meant, asshole.”

“How about we go get some coffee, then I’ll take you to a hotel.”

“Nn.”

“Man,” Kagome groaned an hour later. “I think I’ve got to be the worst drinker ever.”

“Don’t feel bad, Kags.” Maru said sympathetically, handing her a small glass of water and a few aspirin. “You just had one bad night and a lot of drinking.”

“Cha.”

“Is there anything that I could get you?”

“Mhm.” She swallowed the pills in a gulp of water.

“What’s that?”

“What we used to love doing all the time.”

He smirked, looked down at the floor and shook his head a little. “You know what you’re asking of me?”

“I know exactly what I’m asking.”

Still shaking his head, he kicked off his shoes, and then his socks, jacket and shirt were soon to follow. He slipped into the bed behind her and held his head up with one hand and wrapped his other arm around her waist. “You realize how long it has been since we have actually done this?”

“Ten years, eleven months, one week, three days, eighteen hours, forty seven minutes and fifty four seconds. Roughly.”

“You really counted to the second?” He chuckled lightly in her ear.

“No. I was being a smart ass.”

“I miss this with a woman,” he said bluntly.

She turned from her side to her back, looked him in the eye for a few moments, before saying softly. “I’ve missed you.”

He looked down at her, searching her face, but he did not know what he was looking for. He leaned down and nuzzled her neck. He took a deep breath and held it to savor the essence of her naturally perfumed skin. “I missed you too.” He mumbled into her neck, still nuzzling it.

“Make love to me, Maru.” She said in a whispered tone.

“What would that say to the ones we didn’t go home to tonight?” He whispered in return to her blunt request.

“I don’t care what he thinks. I want you to make love to me like you used to.”

“Hn…” He paused. Oh gods, how he wanted to make love to her. When he had first spotted her in the club; that had been his first thought, among a few other less sexual thoughts. He kissed the underside of her jaw a few times before moving down her neck and across her bare shoulder.

“Please Maru.” She moaned into his ear as he kissed her shoulder. He slowly trailed open-mouthed kisses up her neck over her jaw and finally to her mouth. “Please,” she moaned again, this time softly.

The Next Morning

He was the first to wake, as he had always awoke with the sun. She was snuggled close up to his side; he had missed that as well. He slowly turned onto his side, careful not to wake her, propped his head up and watched her sleep. He watched as the sunlight crept across the bed, towards her sleeping figure. He chuckled lightly when he heard her let out a little snore. He brushed some hair away from her face and lightly kissed her forehead. He watched as the sunlight crept across the bed, towards her sleeping face.

He thought back to what they had in college and wondered what had happened. They seemed perfect for one another. Even his mother thought so, and it was a rarity among rarities that she actually liked someone, let alone someone he happened to be dating. He thought back to just before everything fell apart and remembered taking her best friend to the jewelry store, to help him pick out an engagement ring for her.

He had all but given up hope of finding the perfect ring for her too; until he had actually found it. He still carried it around with him. His wife had always been jealous of the beautiful ring and had often asked him why he kept holding on to it. If she had known what it truly meant to him she would have died long before she actually had, and she had always hated him for that. Many times over the years he had fantasized about staying with Kagome and actually getting a chance to put the ring on her finger.

He slowly crawled off the bed over to where he had taken his jewelry off and picked up the ring that was loosely hanging from a thin golden chain. Taking the ring off the chain, he went back over to the bed and climbed back in without waking his sleeping angel. She had definitely been taking care of her body and her appearance, as when he had grabbed her left hand, he had noticed the well manicured fingernails.

He had also noticed, upon examining her hand, that she had no ring on her ring finger. That one little fact pleased him to no end, and there wasn’t even a mark to show she had taken any off recently. That also pleased him more. He gently slid the ring onto her finger, praying that her finger size hadn’t changed. He eased it on slowly and let out a breath he had not known he was holding when he realized it was a perfect fit.

She had always been a perfect fit in his life. As he was admiring the ring on her hand, he noticed that she was starting to wake. He smiled down at her, and kissed her forehead. “Morning, beautiful.”

“Hnn…can you turn off the lights? They are hurting my brain.”

He smiled and got up to close the drapes on the window. “That’s what happened when you drink too much; you have a hangover.”

“Thank you, Captain Obvious.” She said dryly, rising to cover her eyes with her left hand. Almost instantly, she noticed something different about it. Jerking it away from her face she begun to examine her hand, and seen the decent sized stone on her finger that she knew was not hers. “Maru,” she called sounding very concerned, stretching out his name. “Please tell me that we weren’t so drunk last night that we did not got married.”

He walked back over to the bed in his boxers and crawled up to lay next to her. “Why do you sound so worried?”

“Just please tell me that we didn’t do it.”

“We did it.”

“This can’t be happening.” She dug her hands into her hair, about ready to rip it out.

“Beautiful, nothing is going to change what happened between us last night.”

“Oh god, we even consummated it?!” she cried.

“I’ll gladly do it again, right now.”

“No, you don’t get it. He’s going to know!”

“Is he hurting you in anyway?” Maru asked seriously concerned.

“What? God no! He wouldn’t hurt a fly.” She paused then added, “Well, maybe any man that he thinks is getting too close to me.”

Maru did not really have a response to that. What could he say? After a few moments of silence, he asked. “I know that since you’ve been with him, you’ve compared us. Tell me, who is better?”

“Oh my god. No. I haven’t been with him. That’s…” what was the word for it? “Disgusting.”

“So you’ve never compared either of us?”

“God no…I need to get home, to the one waiting for me.”

“You’ve never compared me with anyone?”

“Maru, I really don’t have time for this.” She said frantically, searching for her clothes. “Where is my dress?” He looked for a moment before clearing his throat and pointed up. “How the hell did it get up there?” She asked as she started jumping up and down trying to get the slightest piece of fabric to drag it down.

He walked over to her grip her hips and hoisted her up so she could get her dress. Once her feet her hit the floor again, she started putting her dress back on.

“So when you go home, is he going to be the first thing that you see? Or are you going to look in the mirror and realize that you need to stop lying to yourself?”

“I am not lying to myself.”

“You keep telling yourself that.”

“Why must you antagonize me?”

“I’m antagonizing you?”

“Yes, you are.”

“What are we going to do now?” He asked with a sigh.

“I can’t think about that right now.”

“Why not? You’re being awfully persistent about getting home, and yet you haven’t given me one second of thought since you woke up,” he lectured. He then focused on the unspoken worry that was fluttering between them “Do you regret it?”

She thought about his question while she was strapping up her heels. She combed her fingers through her hair. “No, I don’t regret it.”

“Then, why won’t you stay with me?”

“I just can’t, Maru.”

“How long have you two been together?”

“About nine years.”

“Nine years, and you’ve never slept with the guy?”

“Not every relationship is about sex,” she returned defensively. “He needs me to take care of him.”

“What is he, an invalid?”

“No, he is not an invalid. He is more of a dependent.” Walking over to him, she gave him a good, long kiss. He notice and walk out of his life, and then said, “Just one?”

She stopped, put her hand on her hip, bringing her other hand up to her mouth and told herself that she wouldn’t let him see her cry. She waited a few moments to compose herself, and then turned around to face him. “One what?” she cried. ‘Dammit, I didn’t want to start crying, at least not now!’ She chastised herself.

“Just one dance.” He said softly as he walked towards her with his left hand out stretched.

She hung her head and sighed. She knew that she probably shouldn’t, but she wanted to feel his arms around her again, to feel the love they had so many years ago, and to know that he still needed her just as much as she needed him. Lightly putting her hand in his, she let out a sharp breath when he pulled her to him and wrapped his arms around her in a hug. She stood there with her hands at her sides and her face buried in his chest.

“Give me a reason, and don’t tell me that it’s because you have to go home.”

With a sigh and sadness in her voice, she said “I can’t.”

He bent his knees, grabbing her behind the leg, and hoisted her up and wrapping her legs around his waist. He walked over to the bed and lay her down, leaning towards her and kissing her neck. After a moment, he whispered in her ear, “Let me make love to you one more time.”

“Maru,” she began to cry. “You making love to me is the best and worst thing for me right now. It’s not going to make me change my mind.”

He rested his forehead on her shoulder and let out a sigh. “Isn’t there anything I can do to change your mind?”

“No.” She said sadly.

He breathed in deeply, and slowly let it out. “Let me anyways.” He pleaded.

“Why me? Why not the woman waiting at home for you?”

“I’ve missed the touch of a woman for far too long. Even more so, I’ve missed your touch. Only you know how to touch the inner most part of my soul.”

Even though her head was against the mattress, she pushed her head back, therefore arching her back and let out a sob that sounded so torn. Soon after, her tears flowed freely. “Why,” she asked on a sob, quietly. “Why are you doing this to me again?”

“I’m sorry,” he let out in a whisper as he was nuzzled her neck.

She lay there for a while, while he was laying on her. She thought about the pros and cons of staying with Maru and making love with him one more time. She did not see any real bad to it. She couldn’t actually tell Maru that the that was waiting at home for her was her dog, Sessho. Somewhere in the back of her mind, something kept telling her that Sessho would be completely fine.

“Maru,” she called softly after a long while. He made a single syllable reply, and then she continued. “Promise me, you won’t hurt me.”

He forced his self up and looked at her sharply, “I would never hurt you, I love you, and I always have.” Then he added to himself, ‘Even more so than my late wife.

She walked up her driveway, wondering why she had not taken her car and met Sango at the club. As she drew closer to the house, she could hear barking and smiled. She could just imagine him sitting at the door, his tail going a mile a minute. She put the key in the door, now, to her dismay, heard growling.

“Sessho, stop.” She said through the door.

He continued to growl, but lowered the threat in it. She opened the door to look at her handsome boy, who in his own way seemed to be snubbing her.

“Come here boy,” she said, lightly slapping her thighs.

He only walked away.

“Why are you being so mean?” she asked, closing the door, as if she expected him to give her a reply.

What would have happened if everything worked out between them? “In a way,” she thought out loud, “I hated lying to him. Why had I told him that I had someone waiting for me at home? I have a dog waiting for me at home, not a boyfriend, fiancé or even a husband. A dog. Was I really that scared of what might have happened?”

“Yes, yes I am.” She answered herself.

She walked into her living room and with a sigh plopped down onto the couch. Why of all the songs in the world, why did the radio DJ have to play that one? It was as if that song was played just for them. Or had Maru planned it? She waited there for a few minutes, and then decided to take a shower.

About two hours later, she reemerged from the bathroom with only a towel wrapped around her body while she used another one to dry her hair. She walked into the bed room and flopped onto the bed, her hair spanning across it. She closed her eyes and fell asleep, dreaming of Maru.

~*~*~

He pulled into the driveway, shut the engine off, leaned back and let out a sigh he hadn’t known he was holding. He couldn’t believe he had just let her go like that. He hadn’t even tried to stop her. He had been fantasizing about her all these years, why, when he had her in his grasp, did he just let her walk out of his life, again? He closed his eyes and replayed the whole car ride to her house in his mind.

They just pulled out of the lot of the hotel and she was silently staring out the side window. He stole a glance of her and sighed mentally. What is there to say now? He asked himself. Kagome looked just as beautiful as he had always remembered to be. It was about ten minutes into their drive when he had asked, “Kagome, I need you to think really hard on this, and I want you to answer truthfully. What do you see happening once you leave this car?”

She was silent for so long he thought that she hadn’t heard him, and was about to ask again, when she opened her mouth to say something. “I honestly see myself walking away and not looking back.”

Ouch. That stung really deep. “You don’t even want to try to work it out with me?”

“There are times in life when you have to pick and choose who you reconcile with, and who not to. I don’t think it would be a good idea for either of us.” She looked down at her hand with the huge rock on her finger. After a few moments, she took the ring off and gave it back to him. “I wish to have a divorce.”

“Keep it, I bought it for you.” He said, before the sadness could seep into his voice. There were a few moments of silence before he continued, “ I bought it for you, years ago.”

“Why?”

“Well, the point was to surprise you and ask you to be my wife, but then something happened between us, it played out and I never brought it up.”

“You’ve kept it all these years?” She asked, shocked.

“My wife had always been jealous of that ring.”

“Why did you keep it?”

“Because. Whether you got it or refused it in any way, it is still yours. I bought it for you.” He stopped at a red light and looked at her.

“You love me, don’t you?”

“I’ve never stopped loving you.” He let out a breath and stared ahead.

He never felt her eyes leave his profile as he started moving again. She finally spoke, voice trembling “You promised you won’t hurt me again…” She began to tear.

“I’m not trying to hurt you.” He paused to a moment, and then asked, “Do you want a family?”

“I have family.” He glanced over at her for a moment and glared at her. “Yes, I want a family of my own.”

“Why not share that family with me?”

“….”

He stole a glance at her then asked, “Do you really think that I was that bad?”

“You cheated on me. With my sister.”

“Sister…” He thought for a moment before the questionable moment happened, and then it dawned on him. “Kagome, in my defense, I was extremely drunk, and she looked like you.”

Her only reply to him was a grumble.

He brought himself back to reality and let out another sigh. What was he going to do with himself, he knew he definitely could have made that go better than it actually had. Getting out of the car, he headed into the house. “Well, it is still standing, I suppose.” He said to himself out loud.

He put the key in the door, and turned the lock to opened the door, he was bombarded by a black haired seven year old spit fire before he even put his foot down inside the door. “Papa!” He looked around as he shut the door and held the little girl in his arms. The house looked spotless. Then again, it was only eight thirty in the morning.

“What are you getting into now little girl?! Wait till your father gets home…” A voice said, coming from the kitchen and getting closer. After a moment, the young woman threw her hands up in disgust. “Finally! I was never told I had to spend the night last night. It’s going to cost you extra.”

“You will be well compensated. I am sorry it was last minute. Though, I do believe I have left you a message on your phone saying that I wasn’t coming home last night.”

“Must have not heard it, Rin wore me out last night.”

“I wouldn’t be surprised.” Sesshomaru set the little girl on the floor and told her to finish her breakfast. Once she left the room, he pulled out his checkbook and wrote a check to her for a grand. “I am guessing that is more than enough to cover you spending the night.”

The young woman stared at the check and her eyes popped out of her head. “More than enough, definitely! It is like a month’s pay!”

A short while later, he watched as the young woman left and then sat down on the couch and put his head back and let out a breath. He looked at the ring in his hand, his heart sank even more.

As they always say, if you love something let it go free and if it comes back it was meant to be.

He wondered if there could have ever been a chance of the two of them getting back together, and this time he would hold onto her tightly and never let go.
