Kagome bit her lip, fidgeting as she sat on the edge of the well. Her trip to the future had yielded what she had hoped, but now that she had it she was hesitant.

“Kagome. You look hesitant.”

She looked up at her fiancé, her mate-to-be, and came to a decision. She stood up and dug into her pocket for the small velvet covered box. She opened it and held it up to the daiyoukai.

He examined the contents, a gold ring with a broad masculine-looking band set with a three large fiery red-orange stones that glinted as they caught the sunlight. He cocked his head in an inquiring way and she explained.

“The stones are topaz. It’s a family heirloom that belonged to my mother’s father. She gave it to her husband, my father. It is meant to go to the eldest daughter when she marries, a gift for her husband,” she looked up shyly. “For you.” She hesitated. “I’m not sure how you can wear it though, because you shift and use a sword and claws. Some men wear their rings on a chain, or not at all, because it is dangerous to wear rings and certain jewellery while they do certain types of work. Fighting definitely qualifies.”

Sesshoumaru reached behind, tugging a strand of hair in front of his face and cutting it with a nail. Then he threaded the ring on it, knotted the hair ends together, and slipped it over his head like a necklace, tucking the strand and ring under the layers of his clothes.

“It will be safe when I shift,” he assured her.

Kagome smiled. Now no one but she and him would know he wore it. She tucked the box away and moved to his side. Slowly they began walking back to the village, almost meandering, but Kagome didn’t mind.

“Tell me about topaz. The stones looked more red than yellow.”

“They are of the ‘imperial’ variety, more red-orange than yellow, and they more rare and expensive too. Did you know topaz comes from the Sanskrit word ‘tapas’ meaning fire? The Romans linked topaz with Jupiter who is the god of the sun.” She smiled slyly. “When it is set in gold and worn around the neck it is believed to dispel bad charms. Some say it changes colour in the presence of poisoned food or drink. And all of these powers increase and decrease with the phases of the moon.” Then her expression smoothened. “Topaz is said to relax the mind, provide focus, mental clarity, and confidence. Not that you really need it.”

She snuck a peek at him and was pleased to see he was amused though his face remained mask-like. She could see it in his eyes, bright and brilliant like the sun, like topaz.
