I Cannot Give You Children

You will tell me what you meant by saying what you did the other day, Kagome,” Sesshoumaru demanded. “And do not pretend you do not remember. You know of what I speak.”

From the look on her face, Kagome knew quite well what he was talking about, and didn't want to discuss the matter at all. But it didn't look like he was about to let it drop...

What of it?” she asked.

Explain!” he said, frustration heavy in his voice.

What's there to explain? She has something I never will – a child. It's not that hard to understand why I would be jealous of her,” she shrugged.

And why,” he rumbled, “do you think you will never have children?”

Because it cannot ever be allowed to happen, that's why. For the safety of the lands, I cannot ever give you any children, Sesshoumaru,” she replied, something in her voice giving him pause.

For whatever reason, she believed her words wholeheartedly. And that worried him, because he had plans to have quite a few children with her. But if she was saying they could not...

Tell me why, then. I believe I deserve to know why you would make such a sweeping statement,” he responded.

She sighed, turning away from him to look out the open shoji and into the hall. “Because any children I gave you would carry far more power than your heir, Sesshoumaru. They would have your power, and, while not necessarily carrying my own power, would be completely immune to anyone elses spiritual powers. Can you see where I go with this? If one of our children chose to challenge Arata for the rule of these lands...” She trailed off, not really needing to go on.

Suddenly, he understood her grief.

Guilt, sharp and many-fingered, prodded him at the fear she'd been carrying around.

"And you are absolutely one hundred percent positive, Kagome?” he asked. “You know for a fact that this would happen? How?”

Come on, Sesshoumaru, are you really that arrogant that you think I wouldn't give our children an advantage over others? My blood in them will protect them from all other spiritual power that isn't stronger than my own. Your son cannot say the same. What then of the West? What if one of our sons were ambitious, and could not see the West led by one who was weaker? Is not that how alpha works?”

And in that, Sesshoumaru knew he had her, because sooner or later, she would come to understand. Even if he and his first mate had had more children, and one of them had proven the stronger, an alpha battle would have been inevitable. His own father had been a younger son. It only mattered who had the strength to rule, not who was born first.

It would, however, with his mates tender heart, take time for him to convince her – and that, he had plenty of.

She didn't realize that she had just lost that battle before it had begun, because hanyou or not, if a challenge against Arata was made for control of the west, whoever won would be the new Lord, and none of the council or any others would dare challenge one who had defeated the defacto heir.

It was a done deal.

And of course, there was no telling whether they would even have a boy – it could be a girl, a beautiful little girl like her mother, who would be most sought after in the courts when she came of age.

He could deal with that – any who looked at his daughter wrongly would die at his hand, and that would end that.

Satisfied with his thoughts, he began to decide how to go about convincing his little mate of the validity of his plans.
