“It’s….gone.”

“Nothing was ever there.”

“It was. I’m sure of it.” She threw the trinket inside the bag and furiously stuffed everything back in. A plain black sock stuck out from the top. “I don’t understand. How can you sit there and refuse to acknowledge me. The man I knew was honorable above all else. And lying, especially to a human, was utterly beneath him.”

“It is quite simple. You see, I am not the man you knew.” He said the words with such conviction she had almost believed him.
