This story is for the Lyric Muse Challenge. It is based on the song "Down the Rabbit Hole" by Adam Lambert. I do not own the song or the story the song is based on. Hehe, I'm writing a story based on a song based on a story!

Enjoy.

A cold wind batted at the grass, making the long green strips sway in the light of the setting sun. A soft piece of grass brushing against her cheek was what woke Kagome from her slumber. Heavy eyes blinked open and stared uncomprehendingly at the sight before her. The green grass had nothing in common with the white and black of her laboratory and the room would never get this cold unless she had some project that required it.

“Computer, change temperature to 70 degrees Fahrenheit.” She said out loud. There was no response and if anything it got colder. Kagome used her hands to move to as sitting position and stared at her first look at the sunset. Nothing was amazing about it, thought he purple and blue of it looked beautiful to Kagome. What worried her most was the absence of red. Kagome knew that the red color was caused by pollution and there was nowhere she knew of in the world that you could find a sunset without red in it. The fact that she could not see any meant that she was completely and utterly lost in a place that was either uncharted or unlivable.

Kagome wiggled her feet in the grass and wondered idly what had befallen her shoes. She did not mind the feel of the grass, but it was completely irrational to walk around without them. Kagome still wore her white lab coat and a quick glance showed her that it was in one piece, so nothing very dangerous could have happened. She listed her right arm and looked down at her wrist, expecting to see her watch com’ that she could use to call someone to pick her up and return her to her lab. Instead, she was greeted by a strip of skin that was much paler than the rest of her because of lack of exposure. She only removed her watch com’ when she had to bathe, so the fact that it was not there meant something bad had happened. She dropped her arm back to her side and glanced around the area, hoping to see some kind of smoke that would point her in the direction of a town.  There was a mountain range to her right, but other than that there were only trees and grass in her sight.

There was a soft growl from behind her. Kagome spun around to verify the danger but trees blocked her vision. As a scientist, one of Kagome’s job requirements was curiosity. That same thing that made her an award winning specialist made her follow the sound though it might lead her to trouble.

Trouble awaited her at the foot of a large tree in the form of a dog.

Silver fur sparkled from the departing sun. Kagome’s fingers twitched at the sight, wanting to run through the fur to see if it was as soft as it seemed. A slim black leash was attached to a studded collar that encircled the dog’s neck. The other end was tied to the tree he sat next to. Kagome had no idea why she decided that the dog was a he, but she went with her instincts. Kagome looked the dog’s body over; he looked to weight as much as herself. She had no idea what breed he might be and really she did not care. Her eyes went to his face and met his eyes with surprise. Golden eyes stared into her blue ones with unblinking intensity, a very strange thing for a dog to do with someone it did not know. A low growl rumbled through his chest and his lips pulled back to show sharp white teeth. Instead of snapping at her, they closed over the leash that connected him to the tree and gave a tug.

“Do you wish for me to release you?” Kagome asked in confusion. The dog let go of the leash and his head dipped in a nod. Kagome thought again of how strange the dog was, but she moved forward to comply with his wishes.

The leash was connected with a small clip to the collar. Hoping that the dog would not change his mind and decide to bite her, Kagome quickly released the leash and backed up. The dog got to his feet and did a full body shake, making his fur swing back and forth in a way that had Kagome reaching forward before she knew what she was doing. One hand settled on his fur and slipped down. Kagome found that the fur was softer than she had imagined.

The dog moved his head and rubbed his cheek against Kagome’s arm. A second later he stepped back, away from her. Kagome watched the dog as he turned and headed away, probably towards his home. She was not prepared for him to head for another tree and disappear.

“Huh?”

Kagome followed the dog’s path to the tree and was stunned to find that the dog had disappeared into what seemed to be a giant rabbit hole. Strange enough, it was large enough for even someone of her own size to fit.

Kagome kneeled down and stared into the hole. All she could see was darkness…

Suddenly there was a push from behind her and Kagome was falling forward, into the shadows. She let out a scream as the abyss swallowed her whole.
