And In The End by soulNchantress

Poking

It was such a simple and honest question, even if the answer was largely unknown to her.  She could understand it though.  He was one that truly believed that only Demons would live through to the end.  Regardless, she answered him just as simply.  “The Kami allowed me to live.”

Sesshomaru’s steady gaze landed on her and for a moment he allowed his disbelief to shine through his golden orbs.  “Are there others of your kind hidden away, or are you special?”

She gave a breathy giggle in surprise.  She had thought for sure that he would call her a liar and kill her.  Instead, he was being sarcastic.  If she wasn’t so amused by his semi-belief in her explanation his sarcasm would have riled her more.  Basically, she was just happy to have someone real to talk to.  “I have not seen another living creature in fifteen years.  Not until you showed up.”

He decided to humor her.  It was…nice to have someone to converse with, even if the Miko was a little senile. “Then how?”

It was her turn to raise her brow.  “How did I survive, or how am I special?”

“Both.”

“I am alive because the Kami will not allow me to die.”  Here she paused for a heartbeat.  A small smirk came to her lips.  It was time to poke a small stick at the dog that was always so sure of his superiority.  “I guess I’m special because the Kami like me better than everyone else.”

Kagome knew it was blasphemous to speak as if she knew the Kami so well.  Really though, after her past encounters with the stuffy Lord, he had one coming.  She was almost positive that the Kami would let this one slide.  After all, what else could they do to her?  She was already living in Hell on Earth.

Sesshomaru’s loud and feral growl filled the clearing, causing the water in the small pond to ripple with its sonic vibrations.  “Perhaps This Sesshomaru should prove to you how easily even a ‘special’ human can die.”

They both rose to their feet.  He stood on one side of the green clearing ready to lunge at her.

She stood with her back to the tree smiling and unafraid.  This was so…normal.  It reminded her so much of the way things once were, so much so, that she would happily flirt with death.  Even though the growl had her knees trembling with its ferocity, it was coming from another living being.  It was, in a word, amazing.

A/N:  Soon.  That's my answer to everyone that wants to know if we will ever find out what happened to the earth.  I can say that it was a series of unfortunate events (I DO NOT OWN THAT PHRASE).

Updates will be kind of slow.  I have three girls and all of them have the stomach flu.  It's a mess 'cause I'm having to tend to 'em.  Plus, my hubby says he doesn't feel too well either.  I'll update as I can.

Again...Thank you all so much for your reviews!!  I really wouldn't have it in me to share anymore of this story if it wasn't for you all.  Thank you, thank you, thank you!
