‘He’s gone.’

That’s all that Kagome could think. The love of her life, Kouga, was gone. He’d been killed in a car accident last week. She watched as the priest threw dust on his coffin. She stood up and threw the flower into the grave. It fell across the top of it. She stepped back into the arms of her eighteen year old son, Shippo. He threw his flower and turned her around. He slowly guided her to the waiting limo.

She climbed in and sighed. The day wasn’t over yet. She still had to get through the repast Thankfully Kouga’s family had done everything. Toga Taishou, affectionately called Papa Inu, was Kouga’s father’s cousin and had taken care of all the arrangements from the funeral onwards. The repast was being held at their house.

She knew them intimately because she was his son Sesshoumaru’s personal assistant. That had been how she’d met Kouga. He’d come to meet Sesshoumaru for lunch and they had taken an instant liking to each other. He’d been fun and easygoing. Even Shippo had liked him. After eight months of dating he’d popped the question over dinner one night. She smiled as she remembered how he’d looked in the candlelight on one knee asking her to be his mate and wife. She twisted the four carat ring on her finger as a fresh wave of tears slid down her face.

He’d asked her to be both so that way there would be no mistake that she was his. She remembered bowling him over to the floor in her acceptance. And now two months before their marriage and mating ceremonies he was dead. A drunk driver had driven on the wrong side of the highway. She’d killed Kouga, herself and another driver with countless others hospitalized. She hoped the bitch rotted in hell.

“Mom.”

She blinked as she was patted on her knee by Shippo. She turned to him, nodding her thanks as he handed her a tissue before he opened the door. She stepped out and walked into the front door of the Taishou manor. It was more a small mansion and it had swags of black fabric all around, denoting that the household was in mourning.

She sighed and sat down, taking off her hat, setting it on the table in front of her. Papa Inu came in and set a glass of mixed fruit juices in front of her along with two aspirin. She looked up at him and smiled as tears fell from her eyes. He pulled her out the chair and held her close as she sobbed.

…………………………………………………………

Two hours later…..

Shippo was aggravated. He was tired of how these males were acting around his mother. Every time he turned around someone was smiling in her face or touching her. Be it her arm, her shoulder or her back it was like they couldn’t keep their hands off of her. None of the touches were improper but he could see the look in their eyes as they devoured her hungrily. They were all out to get her. He was about to get up when Papa Inu sat next to him.

“Be easy pup.”

“But I don’t like this.”

Papa Inu nodded. “It was bound to happen. Your mother is a very attractive woman and she’s single again. ”

Shippo frowned. “Are you serious?”

He nodded. “Yes. Everyone wants her to see how saddened they are and hope that she will turn to them in her time of need.”

“It sounds so sordid.”

“It is, but for a lot of them this is their way of letting her know that they are available.”

“Why don’t they just back away and let her breathe for a couple of months? Then they can let her know how they feel.”

Papa Inu smiled at his naiveté. “Because by then it will be too late.” He looked over his shoulder. “Your prayers are about to be answered.”

Shippo cocked his head. “Huh?”

“Sesshoumaru’s back.”

As soon as he said it the demon appeared. He headed straight for Kagome, his aura becoming heavier with each progressing step. It was positively oppressive when he reached the crowd of men around Kagome. Almost immediately they dispersed until it was just the two of them. Shippo was impressed. He hadn’t even had to say a word.

“Wow!”

Papa Inu chuckled. “Yes, he can have that effect on people.”

Shippo now felt better about the whole situation. Sesshoumaru was, next to Papa Inu, the strongest taiyoukai he knew. He was a man of few words and he was brutal if needed to be. Shippo idolized him and at one time had wished that maybe he and his mother would hook up. Yet in the five years she worked for him nothing had happened and then Kouga had come along. Kouga had been great and Shippo had really been looking forward to having him as his stepfather. Too bad the tragedy had occurred. His mother had really been happy.

Papa Inu stood up. “Come pup, lets’ go get something to eat.”

Shippo followed him eagerly.

…………………………………………………

Two and a half hours later……

Kagome couldn’t understand what happened. One moment she was being led to the bedroom that had been set up to for her in the manor and the next Sesshoumaru was on top of her pressing his way inside. She arched her back as tears slid down the sides of her face into her hair.

“Sessh-“

“Shhh. It’s okay. Just let it happen.” He lightly kissed her lips as he pushed his head further into her folds.

“You're hurting me!” She pushed against his chest in a futile effort to remove him.

“Okay, okay. Hold on.” He pulled out and spit on his hand before rubbing it on his head. As a dog demon his saliva was thicker than a human’s. He centered himself and pushed back in slowly. He kissed her deeply, swallowing her moans as he worked his way deeper inside. He groaned as the heat of her womanhood surrounded him.

She broke the kiss as she tightened up on him. “I don’t think this is a-”

His voice was soft as he gave her gentle kisses on her temple. “Don’t think, just feel. Let me do this for you.” With a determined thrust he was flush with her. He ground into her as she hissed. “See, this is not so bad.”

She shook her head. “We shouldn’t be doing this.” Her fingers curled in his shirt as her eyes filled with more tears.

He began riding her gently, so as not to jostle her too much. His voice was soothing and calm. “Why not? We’re not hurting anyone. Don’t worry, everything will be alright.” He covered her mouth with his as she was about to speak.

……………………………..

Shippo could not believe what he was seeing and hearing. He’d come to the room to see if his mother was alright and had gotten the shock of his life. The door had been partially open and he’d peeked in and seen something he’d never thought of in a million years. Sesshoumaru was between his mother’s legs, trying to convince her that it was okay in a voice he didn’t think it was possible for the taiyoukai to conjure up.

Shippo watched as Sesshoumaru thrust into her. They were fully clothed. As a matter of fact they still had their shoes on. This wasn’t right and he extended his hand to push the door open.

“Come away from there, pup.” Papa Inu’s voice was soft but firm.

Shippo spun to see the demon standing behind him. When had he gotten here? “But-”

“Hush. You don’t want to embarrass your mother, do you?”

Shippo shook his head.

“Alright then. Let’s go have a talk.” He put his arm around Shippo’s shoulders and led him away. They went into his study on the lower level. Shippo sat down where he was told and took the glass of fruit juice that was offered to him. Papa Inu sat on the other side of his desk and reclined for a moment, staring into his whiskey glass. Shippo was too keyed up to wait for long.

“Why?”

“Because he wants her.”

“But Kouga’s not even cold in his grave.”

Papa Inu smiled sadly. “I know but sometimes that’s just the way things are.”

“It’s not right.”

“No, but it’s real. Try not to think too badly of Sesshoumaru. Patience never was his strong suit and he’s a bit desperate at the moment.”

Shippo scoffed. “Desperate? Sesshoumaru?”

Papa Inu smiled. “Surprised? He is only a man after all, demonic capabilities be damned. He can’t allow her to slip through his fingers again so he’s doing what’s quickest to keep her.”

“Fucking her?” He curled his lip into a sneer.

He glowered at the insolent kit. “Watch your mouth, pup. You dishonor your mother with such language.” He watched as the kit bowed his head in shame and muttered an apology. “That’s better. He’s going to impregnate her. She’s going to be walking around in a daze for a while. By the time she realizes what happened it will be too late to abort. In the meantime he will be there to support her in any way he can.”

“But-”

“I claimed Izayoi the same way.”

Shippo’s eyebrows hit his bangs. “Really?”

Papa Inu nodded his head in the affirmative. “Yes. Only she had been married. Her husband had died in a freak construction accident. He had been one of my top ranking construction consultants at the time. Since we worked so closely together I knew her. I have to tell you that there was nothing untoward in our relationship. I found her utterly gorgeous but I kept my mouth shut and my eyes off of her. I wouldn’t dishonor her or her husband in such a way.  Then when the accident happened I took care of everything and had her bedded before she knew what hit her. Inuyasha was born six months later.”

“Wouldn’t that have made eyebrows raise?”

“Probably but you need to know that she was a stay at home wife so she was only seen when there were company functions or maybe around town. She stayed here with me throughout her pregnancy but no one knew any better. When she had Inuyasha everyone assumed it was her husband’s because of the gestation period.”

“The gestation period?”

“Yes. Human offspring are carried for a term of nine months. Demons are only for six. Therefore, everyone thought that she’d been pregnant when her husband got killed. It also helped that Inuyasha came out with black hair.”

“But his hair is white now.”

He smiled as he nodded. “Yes, but it didn’t change until he was two.”

Shippo nodded in understanding. “And by then it didn’t matter.”

“No.”

The atmosphere was calm as smooth jazz playing on the radio wafted around them. Shippo suddenly sighed. “So now what?”

Papa Inu cocked his head as he took a sip of his drink. “Well, now you become my grandchild.”

Shippo’s eyebrows rose. “Are you serious?”

He nodded. “Absolutely. Your mother is fertile and will probably be pupped before the night is through. Then Sesshoumaru’s going to mate her once he convinces her it’s for the best. Get used to seeing him around because he’s going to be your stepfather.”

Shippo sat in awe as he realized how quickly his whole world was about to change. He frowned as a niggling thought pushed its way to the forefront of his mind. “Why didn’t he just claim her before? Why go through all of this? She’s been his assistant for almost six years.”

Papa Inu sighed. The kit was quick on the uptake. “Because he didn’t want her until Kouga had her.”

Shippo frowned. “That makes no sense.”

He smiled sadly. “Sesshoumaru had always been attracted to your mother, even though he hid it well. I’m his father so I was well aware of the deal. He let it ride figuring that he had all the time in the world to claim her, if he so chose. He’s always been a bit of a snob. Then Kouga came along and swept her off her feet. Not only that but Kouga was a good man and he made your mother very happy, just as she did him. Can you imagine how that made Sesshoumaru feel? Especially when it was in his face every day?”

Shippo cocked his head to the side. “That doesn’t sound fun at all.”

Papa Inu shook his head. “It wasn’t and that’s why he’s desperate to get her pupped as quickly as possible. He doesn’t want to lose her again.”

The room was quiet once again as the music filled the void of conversation. The song changed and a man’s voice crooned out an apt love lost song. Beneath his harmonious observations was the creaking of the bed upstairs where Sesshoumaru was trying to solidify his destiny.

Papa Inu got up out of his chair. “Come on pup. Let’s go out to the movies.”

Shippo smirked at him. “Whatever you say, Gramps.”

They walked out the door chuckling as the music played on.

‘Funny, you always said hope floats

Comprehend it but I can’t cope

So I gotta find my way back, way back to you baby….’
