The Puppy by Riku Ryuu

Can I Take A Message?

For Skye's regret challenge. Yeah, I know you all want me to just fix it already but you have to forgive Sesshomaru; he is a guy. I'm working on some change for the next chapter, so don't worry too much. Sorry if you have been upset because his sadness has gone on too long.

Sesshomaru felt a vibration coming from his pocket and slowly put down his pencil. He wanted to ignore his phone but he knew that it could be his boss calling and it could be important. Reluctantly, he pulled the little flip phone out of his pocket and looked at the top screen. The caller idea showed a strange number and it was not one that was saved in his phone or one that he recognize, so it was possible it was not her but just another business call. With a scowl, he flipped his cell phone open and put it to his ear.

“Sesshomaru Ta-” He began but the other voice cut him off.

“Sesshomaru, don’t hang u-” He instantly pulled the phone from his ear and folded it in half. Sesshomaru knew that it was unfair for him to not give her a chance to talk, but it still hurt too much. At one point he had tried to convince himself that the hurt would die down enough to just be friends with her, but now he knew that could never happen because the very sound of her voice made his heart ache. He regretted that his feelings had gone so far while her feelings had obviously not gotten past the stage of friend, if even that.

The day before Kagome had come to pick up Dolly but he had gone to work early so that there was no chance of seeing her. She had left a note on his table, a little blue sticky note that had her words sprawled across it. It hurt too much to look at the words so he crumpled the little paper up and stuffed it in the jean pocket that still held her ring. It felt childish to ignore her, but he figured he deserved to let go of his normal maturity for a little while. He did not want to admit it to himself, but he missed the little puppy almost as much as he missed her owner. The Dalmatian had become a part of his day, someone he would see whenever he came home. He would look next to his chair, expecting to see the puppy, before he would remember that he would never see the puppy there again. Pretty soon he just stopped looking.

His phone started to ring again but this time he did not check to see who it was. He no longer cared if it was a call from his boss, he didn’t want to hear Kagome’s voice again. He knew that if he did listen, if he just stayed on the line long enough for her to fill his ears with false excuses, he would fall for her trap. He would let everything go and continue loving her while she did not love him.

Sesshomaru picked his pencil up again and focused on the paper in front of him. He hoped that burying himself in his work would help and if it did not help he didn’t know what he would do.

There, and hopefully the next chapter will actually be happy.

Thank you.
