Her Destiny

Prologue

“Actions are the seed of fate deeds grow into destiny.”- Harry S. Truman

Moonlight streamed into the clearing. A moan was pulled from parched lips. The trees swayed with a gentle breeze totally at odds with the turmoil building inside the young woman who tossed and turned in her sleeping bag. Slowly Kagome opened her eyes. Her entire body ached and seemed to pulsate with pain from her various wounds, she was certain she was going to die. But that was not what had brought her back to consciousness. She stilled her breathing and closed her mind to all but the sweet voice that called her name.

“Kagome.”

The dulcet tones wrapped their way around her and she sank comfortably into them. To her right Kagome watched as a small shape moved slowly out of the surrounding forest. It was the “lady”; that much Kagome could discern from the beautiful white Kimono that seemed to float toward her. The woman stopped in front of Kagome and spoke again,

“Kagome, it’s time.”

“Please, not again.” Kagome pled through parched lips.

Like their many encounters before Kagome was mesmerized by the woman’s beauty. Long pale blue hair flowed around her almost touching the ground. Lavender eyes set in a heart shaped face seemed to stare into her soul. She was a flawless beauty with a radiant smile but it was her voice that stole one’s ability to think.

“It’s time.” She repeated. “HE has arrived, the land stinks of evil.”

“I don’t understand,” Kagome whispered, tears of frustration brightening her eyes.

The woman nodded, “I know, but you will understand. It’s time to go.”

Kagome lifted her head to survey her surroundings. The forest was quiet all around her, the silence struck her to the core.

“How can I go? Look at me. I am broken and alone.”

The woman smiled again, “You are not alone.”

“Yes I am!” Kagome yelled. “They are gone. The ones I used to call my friends.”

She was crying in earnest now, her heart ached for the betrayal she had recently suffered.

“And I can’t even go home to heal or heal myself. The well no longer works and my powers are gone. Hell, they didn’t even bother to kill me they just left me to die in this forest, that’s how pathetic and worthless I am.”

“Your powers are not gone Kagome, you are stronger than even you could imagine. It is time to fulfill your destiny.”

The sky darkened around the woman and the air pulsed with life. The woman’s eyes lightened until they glowed.

“Who are you?” Kagome asked, as she did at each encounter. She was not afraid only curious.

The woman’s voice calmed all her fears. “Who I am does not matter, but who you will become will decide the fates of many.”

The woman leaned over Kagome and placed her hand upon her forehead. Instantly Kagome felt the woman’s powers sweep through her body. She tingled all over, every nerve ending pulsed and popped.

“AWAKEN!”, the woman cried and Kagome’s world went white. A loud animalistic cry filled the air. It was a moment before Kagome realized the sound came from her. She felt as if she were being ripped apart. Slowly the pain ebbed and flowed through her body until it finally released her.

“You have what you need now Kagome. You are a great and powerful Miko. Let your heart lead you the rest of the way.”

The woman turned to leave as Kagome lay gasping for air. When she was once again at the edge of the forest she turned,

“Seek the Lord of the West Kagome, he must help you, he is the key and your destiny.”

With that final statement the woman disappeared into the forest and Kagome slipped into blackness.

***************

(Far away)

As lightning struck the mountain, a lone figure stood braced against the darkness. All around him the air moved in distress, pounding away at the immovable mountain until agitated into a full storm. Through eyes of light and darkness the figure looked out on the land in contemplation. Trees fell under the mighty onslaught of wind and rain. The earth moved, shook with fear as a heavy darkness cloaked it in more than just night. Creatures howled and cowered as the wind swept an inky blackness across the land. The presence of evil mixed with the treacherous wind ate away at anything it touched. And so within moments of “his” arrival, the once vibrant forest at the base of the mountain on which he stood was no more. At his smile the wind calmed, the rain stopped and the air stood still. The figure surveyed the blackened land where the forest once stood with determination. There was much to do.
