As You Wish
Sesshoumaru stood tall and silent on the hill overlooking the stretch of rice paddies below. His golden gaze lazily watched the humans of her village as they toiled in the murky waters. The only indication that he even knew she approached was the way his hand moved slowly away from Bakusaiga’s hilt in a silent recognition of the unspoken peace between them.
Moving to stand at his side Kagome let her eyes follow his calm stare to where a little girl in orange chased a small red haired fox kit between the rice rows. “I guess you’re not going to be my brother after all.”
Citrine eyes slanted her way before a silver eyebrow rose in question and Kagome found herself smiling for the first time in days. “Inuyasha changed his mind.” She clarified folding her hands behind her back to keep from reaching out to grasp his sleeve, the one that had once been empty. “He said there were just too many memories. My smell, my face….”
Sesshoumaru turned his attention back to his ward his head only nodding slightly in understanding. Silence hung heavy between them as they stood like two unmoving centennials over the valley. After an awkward moment, Kagome took a step back to leave him to his solitude but his voice stopped her in her tracks.
“This Sesshoumaru has never wanted to be your brother.”
Kagome felt her smile return like the melting spring sun, warming her lips as it grew. “I figured that. But I always hoped you would come to think of me as an alley, if not a friend.”
His first response was a snort of derision as if a lowly human could ever earn the right to be seen in such a light. “I do not wish that either.” His voice held a stern finality.
The smile on her lips suddenly felt cool and empty. Rejection was a pain she was getting use to, after all, she had faced Inuaysha’s and survived. She had expected nothing different from his elder brother but still, deep down, it hurt to be so easily dismissed. After everything they had faced, all the things they had gone through, surely he had softened even a little towards her. Forcing the now chilly smile to widen despite the ache, she found she could swallow the lump in her throat. Her voice sounded stronger than she felt.
“What do you wish to be to me?”
Sesshoumaru turned away from the homely scene below to look down at her, his usually icy gaze suddenly hot and intense. “I wish to be more.”
