Let Down Your Hair by Riku Ryuu

Lady's Work

HI! I haven't been on her in so long! I'm happy to upload this story and unhappy to say that there is a repunzel movie coming out. This story was started before I even heard of it, so I am in no way copying their idea; they are copying mine.

Well, anyway, please enjoy!

Kagome flopped down onto the grass with a happy sigh. She was so pleased to have this time by herself in the beautiful clearing. The sky was so blue above her. The sun shone down on the green grass without so much as a cloud in sight. Warm wind pulled at her simple clothing, carrying the scent of freshly bloomed flowers to her nose. Kagome could practically taste the sweet pies that the cook would make out of berries that she would gladly collect on her way home.

Kagome sighed again, this time sadly. Thinking about going home wasn’t the best way to relax. Home made her think of her duties, the small and large ones that seemed to be growing in numbers every day. Kagome loved her home and her family, really she did, but it was all ladies work that was asked of her. In the beginning, Kagome hadn’t noticed a difference. Now that she thought about it, the change seemed to have started a few months ago, soon after her 16 birthday. Whenever she had said something about going out, Kagome’s grandfather would make a comment about the infirmary having a shortage of bandages or that there was to be a party soon and the cook was having trouble figuring out what to serve. Kagome, caring deeply for her home and everyone that lived there, found herself sewing and cooking and cleaning and planning and babysitting and many more things that she didn’t think of as a fun way to spend her day. It took her about two months to figure out what her grandfather was up to. As soon as she figured it out, she stopped volunteering and instead started to sneak out in the early morning so that she could not be caught. If she wasn’t there, she would not hear of things that needed to be done, and without hearing about them, she could not feel honor bound to do anything to help.

Kagome watched as a flock of birds flew over head. She wished that she could be like them, flying around without caring about what others thought. She felt like a caged bird, caught by her kindness and locked behind the bars of her gender. How she wished that she was a boy instead of a girl. If she was a boy, it would be expected of her to have adventures and have no care of the silly girl jobs. Of course, even if she was a boy Kagome figured that she would be imprisoned somehow.

After finding out that Kagome had no intention of falling in with his plan of becoming a proper lady, her grandfather had started to assign guards to her. Saying that it was only for her protection, the guards were to not leave her side during the day. Kagome put up with it for a week before her annoyance got the better of her. A whole week of disproving men glowering at her, mumbling to each other that she should have stayed home, that she didn’t belong outside of her home, had been too much for her to handle. After the first week, Kagome did everything she could think of to lose the men that were assigned to follow her. It had worked for her well so far.

The crunching of nearby leaves alerted Kagome that she was no long alone. She sat up and looked towards the disturbance to see one of her guards walking towards her.

“What brings you here Miroku?” Kagome asked. Miroku was the only one of her guards that she was actually friendly with. He turned a blind eye to her escapes and in some cases even helped her out by leaving helpful things around for her. He was also the only other person that knew of the clearing Kagome loved so much and escaped to day after day.

“The King wishes to see you. The others are out looking for you as we speak, and unless you want them to find you here and know of this place, you should head back.” Miroku smiled kindly at Kagome. She rolled her eyes.

“What could he want now?” Kagome said under her breath. Miroku moved over to her and helped her up. Once she was on her feet, Kagome turned in the direction of her home. A hand moving to her bottom had her turning back to Miroku with a fist.

“Pervert!” One punch to the stomach and he was down. Kagome stomped out of the clearing, leaving the monk to moan by himself.

Kagome stomped through the forest, past the gate, through the kitchen entrance, and all the way to the King’s throne room. She stood in front of an old man dressed in fine clothing, a golden crown resting on his head.  Kagome felt like she could breathe fire hot enough to melt the crown jewels. Kagome took a death breath, trying to calm the inferno in her blood. Though she was angry, she loved the old man too much to take out her anger on him.

“Kagome! My beautiful girl, where have you been?” Kagome opened her mouth to answer but the king cut her off. “Well it is of no matter. I have something very important to tell you.”

Kagome felt her stomach drop. For some reason, she didn’t think that she was going to like where this was heading. She opened her mouth to question him, but the king started talking again before she could say a word.

“You bags are being packed as we speak and the carriage is ready. The journey will take but a week and there has been no word of trouble upon the road for some time. Of course, you will have to go through the forest and it isn’t the safest place but several men are going with you along with your normal guards, so you do not have to worry. Oh, and I’ll give you money so that you do not have to worry about that either. You must hurry and change into something more presentable.” The man rambled, not quiet looking at her but he did glare at her pants for a second. Kagome frowned, completely bemused by the first part and ignoring his dislike of the pants.

“May I ask where I am going?” Kagome asked tensely. Her first feeling seemed to be correct; Kagome did not like where this was going at all.

“You are going to the Western Lands.” The king said, looking above her head instead of meeting her eyes.

“And why am I going there?” Kagome’s tone was not filled with curiosity. Instead, it seemed to drip venom.

“Well…..” The king looked down at her, looking very firm and set in his plans, whatever they might be.

“Well?” Kagome narrowed her eyes.

“You are to meet your betrothed.”
