Kagome's modern spider web by Marie Louise

Significant Decisions

AN: English is not my first language so I think I may have some grammar faults (also it is my first fanfic thought not my first work). Feel free to correct me, it will help improve my writing. Also... this first chapter does not contains any hint about Kagome's modern life, but it will certainly come because it is crucial for this story to unfold in the proper way. [Disclaimer: I don't own Inuyasha, Rumiko Takahashi does.]

Significant Decisions

He was as good as dead… and she had arrived way too late, to even try to help him. She had failed him. She had left him all alone to deal with the darkness of his heart and now he was no longer among the living.

She fell to her knees at the sight of the bloody stained hanyou.

Naraku’s damned plan had worked again on him.  Just why was Kikyou such a weak spot for him? Did Naraku always had this plan to get rid of Inuyasha and was just waiting for the perfect timing to use it? Had all their efforts been completely and utterly useless against him?

Why? Just why had it happened at such time? When Inuyasha had finally confessed that their feelings were mutual… that the one he loved was her because she’d always accepted him from whom he was… with gifts and faults that completed his weird and utterly hot headed personality. That even accepted the guilt that moved him towards Kikyou again and again…

Sure, that doesn’t mean that she liked it. But who was her to blame the poor guy? Really… a being that was treated with hatred and disdain the very same day he came into life. It was logic that he would fall for the first kind-enough human who showed a decent treatment towards him.

She didn’t hated Kikyou… she couldn’t. After all it was thanks to her that Inuyasha found that people could be kind and warm.

But when Kikyou had returned from the death, well… it certainly had been another story.  But was she at fault? Had she ever wished to return to life? Even if now, she was a miko with thirst of vengeance and a soul full of hate. She knew that that wasn’t the Kikyou Inuyasha had fallen in love with, in the past. Still he felt very guilty because he kept saying that if it wasn’t because of him she would have had a joyful and content life.

Kagome gradually moved her trembling creamy hand towards Inuyasha’s face. He was so cold… His face, his hands, his hair, everything about him was lifeless now. He was no better than an inert stone.

Tears ran down Kagome’s soft cheeks. She wasn´t sobbing… she couldn’t, she was in such a state of shock. The only emotional trace you could see on her face, were those tears. Those silver tears that shined with the gleaming moonlight.

She took a deep breath to fill her lungs… and with her very few energy and rest of will she proceeded to call her companions.

“… Miroku! Sango! …I’ve… I’ve found him.” She yelled with a raspy voice

Sango’s response was first… it came from the trees at the left, not too far away from the terrible scene.

“Where is he Kagome-chan? When Naraku showed up with a look-alike puppet of Kikyou he just fell for it! And when Naraku threw into our faces his scheme… Inuyasha was nowhere to be found. I just hope he isn’t injured that bad... OH MY GOD…” Sango stood as wide eyed as she could be at the sight that appeared before her “Oh no… Kagome… Is he? Is he…?”

“Dead” Kagome said from her kneeling spot at Inuyasha’s right “He is dead Sango.” She added while never looking apart from Inuyasha’s dead body.

“Inuyasha…” Miroku said as he too, came into view behind Sango, with an expression as shocked as hers.

Sango began sobbing and unconsciously threw herself towards the monk who hugged her almost instantly “Houshi-sama! What have we done?! Why couldn’t we see through the fake Kikyou?! She was so lo-loving… I… I thought s-she had changed! Just why couldn’t I see through her? W-Why?!” she shouted between tears and non self controlled weeps.

“Calm down Sango… no one saw anything, not even Inuyasha himself, Naraku even thought of a way to deceive Inuyasha’s sense of scent… it was impossible for us humans to know… it was impossible from the very start.” Miroku said as if trying to convince himself as well of those words.

“Just because we are humans! ” Kagome’s unsteadily and infuriated voice yelled “Just because our humanity we are taken as weak toys and played by every damned creature! Just because we are merely humans they think to have the right of feeling superior by injuring and deceiving us every time it occurs to them to do so! I’m sick!”

“Lady Kagome… “ Miroku whispered, he had never seen Kagome so mad before and still he couldn’t find a way to oppose Kagome’s statements… he had thought similar things before… it was just that he hadn’t voiced any of them.

“Well is the truth Miroku!” Kagome kept yelling “I’m sure Naraku is now laughing his ass because he thinks that Inuyasha’s fall was thus to his humanity, thus his human feelings… Whose everyone consider weakness.”

“But Kagome-chan… sometimes having these feelings really… really hurts. Every time Naraku has set a trap for us he has used our feelings as a weapon against us… How come anyone come to consider them something more than a weakness? How? ” Sango asked tearfully from Miroku’s steady embrace.

“Sango… you have gotten this far because of your affection and care for Kohaku. How can you even consider that as a weakness? When, I’m sure that every single time you were endangered and full of fear… that was the very source of your strength. Your feelings, those feelings you should always treasure.” Kagome said looking with full determination into Sango’s chocolate orbs whereas frowning.

“And… Miroku…” Kagome continued with her annoyed speech “Your will to survive. Your devotion to have a normal life whose is righteous to you… those feelings, had been your motivation all along. That’s no weakness! That’s our human vigor for crying out loud! That’s a force only us humans can use and will use.”

There were a few seconds of silence between the three of them. Everyone staring profoundly at the sight of their fallen friend, their fallen hanyou who had risked his life every single time he could to protect theirs, who would get injured in order to spare deadly injuries from them, who would annoy them endlessly in order to make them forget the thorny and gloomy moments they were passing through. The same boy, who would yell at them for considering themselves weak, and worthless even though they were all considerably weaker compared to him.

Finally Miroku’s voice broke the bottomless silence with his words.

“I agree with Lady Kagome… we cannot let Naraku defeat us with his merciless plan… and we will not let Naraku defeat him” Miroku said with the most solid voice that everyone had heard him use… and with the most convinced facial expression that neither of them knew Miroku had. Those words that Lady Kagome had spoken certainly had him now full convinced in more ways than one. He only could have the same opinion as her. Those feelings had been motivating him to continue… if it wasn’t for them, he would have had given up long time ago…

“ …How?! How are we not-letting Naraku defeat him if he is already DEAD!? Can’t you both see? I can’t think of a better way that being dead to make him seem defeated!” Sango yelled almost hysteric… shaking with every emotion that flashed into her eyes while looking at them.

“Please cool down my dear Sango” Miroku told her while wiping away Sango’s tears with his knuckles in the most gentle and tender way he could find. “If I’m getting correctly Lady Kagome’s idea… we are not letting Inuyasha stay that way.”

“We… aren’t?” Sango asked in what seemed a still sobbing whisper.

“As if! Of course we aren’t… we are using our human feelings and human ways to bring him back among the living! Using our so considered weakness as our underground weapon” Kagome reassured her friend directing her genuinely sapphire gaze to both of her friends

Sango stayed in awe. What was Kagome thinking? Surely she didn’t thought of turning Inuyasha into a clay mannequin such as Kikyou did she? No… Kagome would never think of something like that to her beloved hanyou… she mustn’t… she couldn’t… But, if Kagome wasn’t thinking of THAT, then what was she thinking about?

“How? Don’t tell me you are thinking of…” Sango couldn’t even complete her statement… it was too much for her for even try to say it out loud.

However Kagome seemed to understand the idea… or so you could tell for the way she was gasping with an incredulous look directed towards Sango.

“Oh course I'm NOT! Are you insane? Just who do you think I am anyway?!” Kagome asked pretty offended

Sango felt her cheeks turn unmistakably hot and with an embarrassed and apologetic look on her face she went “Just to make myself sure that you were already… ahmm… discarding that one”

“Gosh Sango! Of course y discarded that one for the very beginning… in fact I never considered it, never at all!” she answered her friend still shocked over Sango´s suggestion “And No… I haven’t thought of a way yet but we will figure this way out, together.”

Miroku nodded before suggesting “I think the first step is to take Inuyasha’s body towards Kaede’s hut, she would fill us with ideas since she is always full of knowledge”

The three of them agreed… it was a silent agreement for it never needed words for them to move from their spot towards Inuyasha’s body, lift up Inuyasha’s body and start making their way up to the old miko’s hut.

Thought, they didn’t know for certain if there was a praiseworthy way to restore the life of the fallen hanyou for they haven’t heard or read about anything related… still they had this clearly identifiable feeling… a linked feeling between the three of them, a shared understanding, a common goal.

It was a commanding sensation that needed no probes for it to exist… to be factual… it just required three hearts beating at the same rhythm, like one. Some call it… hope.
