Chapter 1

"AH!" Sweat flung itself into the air as the young woman straightened from picking herbs, grimacing as her back cracked for the millionth time that day. Kagome smiled as she looked up into the Tiffany Box colored sky and never dreamed of a better day. It was mid- September with clean cool air moving through the village signaling the first cold of fall. It had been three years since Naraku had been defeated. Three years she had been away from the Feudal Era and two months since she had decided to make her home with the Hanyou Inuyasha.

Sango and Miroku had been married and she couldn't have been happier for her two best friends. Their three and a half children were so cute and she relished the thought of being Kagome-Oba-chan. She was surprised after arriving into Edo after her return and seeing Sango and Miroku with kids kids run up to her. According to Miroku, Sango told each child a story of their beloved Aunt Kagome since the first time she knew she was with child. Miroku added sheepishly that he also told them a story during bedtime now. Kagome couldn't help but be touched. Inuyasha had been quiet but gruff and gentle in his own way when he spoke about the kids but his eyes never left her as she strolled with him down the village greeting each villager in return and meeting the new Miko apprentice buy the name of Haruko.

She loved him, and they had been through so much together, but she knew something had been off with him the last week or so since he had come home one late night shaken two weeks ago. Something had changed with him and it hadn't been good. He wouldn't speak of it and she didn't push him, no matter how badly she wanted to, deciding to let him come to her on his own. She frowned as she picked up the basket full of herbs and made her way back to Edo. His attitude had been worsening since that night, his mannerisms gruff, snippy and snarling and not at all like he was when she first returned.

Things had gotten heavy between them that night before Inuyasha managed to calm them down and roughly asked Kagome to be his wife and mate. She'd burst into tears and agreed only to gasp as he brought out a necklace. He told her that if she accepted this, they were to be mated and to give it back would be a refusal of that mating. And if she gave it back he would have no chance on getting her back. He confessed in a low voice that he wouldn't deserve her back if that happened. So of course she accepted with a hug and another heavy petting session. They talked about it all through the night and they had even agreed on a date sometime in spring near the first time they met. It had seemed that Inuyasha had been ecstatic and he had been... until that night.

Giving a small shrug, she let it go and hoped Inuyasha had caught a few fish or a nice pig or deer for dinner so that she could put some of these herbs to good use.

"Kagome!" Turning her head she couldn't help but grin as a five month pregnant Sango chased after her namesake, their oldest daughter, as she was running around the area around Sango and Miroku's hut. The child was adorable and Kagome couldn't help but have a small spot in her heart for the little girl.

"Oh! Kagome-chan! Have you seen.. uh.. Kagome?" Sango huffed as she caught sight of the petite Miko walking toward her.

Laughing softly, Kagome replied, "Look behind the bush beside the hut, Sango-chan, I think she's hiding there." And she gave the bush a wink and giggled as two brown eyes and black hair poked their way out of the bush.

"Gogo-ba-chan no' suppose tell Ka-chan," the little girl said stubbornly.

"Ah, Gome-chan, but its dinner time," Sango said exasperated at her eldest girl. "We're having fish."

At that magic word the little girl bolted out of the bush and toward her mother's legs, "Fish?! Otay!"

Kagome and Sango both burst into laughter at her nearly toothless grin as Sango picked her up and gave her daughter a hug. "Yes, fish, you munchkin. Say goodbye to Gogo-ba-chan."

"Bye-bye, Gogo-ba-chan!"

Kagome laughed and reached over to tweak the girl's nose, "Goodbye Gome-chan." At the little girl's enthusiastic wave, she turned and made her way back to her and Inuyasha's hut on the far side of the village. It was where he preferred it because it wouldn't be too close to the village, but not so far away either in that he could run whenever he wanted to.

"It will be perfect for the pups, Kagome, just wait and see!"

Smiling softly at the memory and of her and Inuyasha's children, Kagome had visions of where she wanted a play area. Twins, her mind supplied, just like Sango and Miroku. She giggled softly at the thought of babies with Inuyasha's soft ears and golden eyes as she came upon the door to the hut. At low masculine groan followed by a keening cry, Kagome's heart began to pound and she opened the door to the hut and froze, dropping her basket, herbs and flowers spilling forth to the floor. Both occupants of the hut froze as the basket hit the floor with a whack. Kagome stumbled and her back hit the side of the hut closest to her as she watched as Haruko covered herself with a blanket as Inuyasha jerked away from her to gape at Kagome.

"So.. so this is why.. you've been so distant. This is why you've been so grouchy and hateful this last few weeks. You've been.. seeing her..." Kagome trailed off to fully take in the naked Hanyou as he stood up, his ears flat against his head and he stepped toward her reaching for her face. He was breathing hard and it pained her to realize she had been witnessing completion of the sexual act. She could see the sweat and juices sliding on the Hanyou's flesh and of the girl's. Kagome squeezed her eyes shut as she realized he was half-hard but quickly deflating in his aftermath. At the touch of his fingers on her chin, Kagome's eyes jerked open and she flinched and her power flinched with her, snapping at his hand and causing a blistering welt. He yelped and jerked his hand back, before trying again with both, obviously trying to cup her face to give her a kiss.

She wouldn't let him touch her with another woman's juices and scent on him. Never again, she thought with venom.

"Kagome.. I..."

"No, Inuyasha. No. This... is the last time... I let you hurt me. To think I almost gave up my life for you. No. I did give up my life for you in the modern era, gave up my family and my friends to come here and be with you because I thought I loved you and you loved me. But this..." she widened her arms to encompass the naked Miko apprentice and Inuyasha's naked state, "this was too much for me to accept from you." She jerked apart part of her yukata and stared at the pretty amber jewel inside the necklace. Slipping it over her head she held it in one hand and watched as Inuyasha paled so much his skin matched his hair.

"Please, don't, Kagome, you know what this means!" He ground out, his eyes pained with regret.

"I do. You said that if I gave this back, I would be refusing you not only now, but forever." She whispered, her lips suddenly very chapped. "What you have done... I am done. No more." And she dropped the necklace on the floor, watching as the stone fell out of the casing. "Have a good life, Inuyasha. May you find the peace Kikyo or myself couldn't give you."

"Kagome, wait, I--"

And Kagome slipped out the door as the Hanyou whipped around to find his hakama's and ran past Sango and Miroku's house hearing the children's laughter and Miroku's sudden cry of her name.
