I Choose You by Jackie

Dreams Screams and Pancakes

DREAM SEQUENCE

I was in a beautiful field beneath the gorgeous night sky. Watching the sky in all its glory when a sudden chill ran along my spine. I looked around and I could see a thick mist begin to form. I wasn’t sure what to do. Should I walk around and see if there was a way out of the mist or stay put and wait for it to pass? Before I could even make a choice a soft alluring voice was heard and it said . . .

DON’T BE AFRAID . . .

THE TIME IS ALMOST NEAR . . .

THE CHOICE WILL BE YOURS . . .

BUT DON’T BE AFRAID . . .

FOR YOU . . .

ARE . . . THE . . .

BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!

Akira walked up the curved marble stairs, of her new mansion in Tokyo, towards her daughter’s room. Opening the door, she walked towards the canopy bed and turned off the on going alarm. With a flick of her wrist she was able to open the curtains to allow the sunlight into the room. She was after all much more then just an average miko. But she was nothing compared to her twin children. Her son, Souta Crescendo Allegretto Higurashi took after his father (because both of them are full blooded demons). He was intelligent, strong, courageous and still very kind. Some thought of him as a Greek god, with his chiseled body and striking good looks. He was a mystical creature that not many could or ever would figure out. And then there was her daughter, Kagome Serenade Allegretto Higurashi who was even more of a unique creature. For her, Kagome was a tennyo (celestial being) from the heavens that had inhumanly beauty, the body of a goddess, extraordinary powers, pure heart and ultimate wisdom. She was perfection on earth with her sumptuous blue black hair and enticing sapphire eyes that seemed to have shimmers of silver in them, that looked like stars in the night sky.

As light slowly began to fill the spacious room, bringing to life the rich forest green colors of the walls, the young beauty that was wrapped in her black satin sheets started to stir. Miaka couldn’t help but giggle as she watched her daughter wiggle around her bed, kicking the sheets off in the process. She shook her head thinking to herself ‘I guess I should wake her up now’. But after calling out her daughters name for a couple minutes, and not getting any response in return, she realized that a different course of action would have to be taken. So Miaka placed a finger on her daughters hand and gave her a small electric shock with her powers. And at first she wasn’t sure it had worked until seconds later Kagome started to scream.

“NO!!!”

Kagome’s POV

It wasn’t the mist I noticed first. It was an eerie feeling that someone else was with me, more then that they were watching me. But the moment I began to look around the mist had already begun to form as if cloaking them from me eyes. Then panic began to build. I didn’t know what to do; the mist had already covered everything. That’s when I heard it. The sound of a male’s voice. I stayed silent and listened with much interest.

DON’T BE AFRAID . . .

That alone had made me alert I didn’t even know what he was referring to. Afraid? Don’t be afraid of what?

THE TIME IS ALMOST NEAR . . .

‘Huh?’

THE CHOICE WILL BE YOURS . . .

Time? Choice? What was with this guy?’

FOR YOU . . .

‘For I what? Can't he talk faster?’

ARE . . . THE . . .

I waited for him to finish, but I never got the chance because everything around me was fading fast. This meant only one thing. I was waking up. I could not help but feel angry at whatever had caused me to wake, and by instinct I couldn’t stop myself from screaming out,

“NO!!!”

“Kagome?!” I heard my mother say in a frightened voice. “Sweetheart are you alright?”

I wanted to answer but my voice wouldn’t respond. It took me a few moments for my eyes to open. But when they did I was welcomed by my mother’s paled concerned face.

“Oh, thank the gods.” She said already in tears. “Oh my poor baby girl. I was so worried. Are you alright?”

“I’m fine,” I said slowly, feeling slightly dazed. I touched my face as if to assure myself that I was real, when I remembered something. “Why did you shock me mom?”

“I had to wake you up somehow Kagome.” My mom said as she sat down next to my feet. “Is that why you screamed? Did I do too much?”

“No. . . no that wasn’t the reason.” I said, still feeling a little dazed. “I was just wondering why you. . .” Suddenly a memory of the dream flashed in my mind. I sat up abruptly, almost knocking my mother off the bed in the process. “What did that man mean by choice?”

“Kagome?” My mother whispered as she leaned towards me to push the hair out of my face. “What are you talking about? What man?”

I ignored her questions as I continued to talk out loud to myself. “It felt so real. The man . . . and the mist. They were both so real.”

“Kagome, what are you talking about?” She said sounding a little angry.

I couldn’t help but roll my eyes. Even if I did tell her the truth, she would just blow it out of proportion. So I decided that instead of lying I would just tell her what I thought she could handle.

“It’s nothing mom, I just had a bad dream.”

“Oh, a dream.” She said as she thought about it. “Is that all it was?”

“You don’t believe me?” Giving her my best hurt face.

“No, I-I mean, I do believe you. It’s just the things you said before. About the guy and mist seeming real to you. I‘m just worried is all.”

“I just thought they looked real. Haven’t you ever had a dream that was so vivid that you couldn’t tell if it was real or not?”

“Yes, and I understand what your getting at sweetie but I don’t know, I feel like your hiding something from me.”

We looked at each other in silence for a while before I leaned back onto my pillows, where I closed my eyes and couldn’t help but think. ‘I wish Souta was here to help me.’ But no sooner had this thought occurred to me that when I opened my eyes again I saw Souta standing in the door way of my room, looking at me with meaningful eyes. I couldn’t exactly say that I was surprised to see him there. It was only natural for him to show up when I wanted him to. But what did surprise me was that he asked me in his very neutral voice.

“Are you hungry?”

There was no Are you okay Kagome? Or What happened Kags? just a plain every day question. But I should have known he wouldn’t ask any of the things I expected him to say. So I simply answered his question.

“Yeah, I’m starving.”

“Good, get ready for school and I’ll go make you some breakfast.” This time he turned to our mother and said with his beautiful charming smile. “Mom do you think you could wake Shippo up, I tried but he won’t seem to budge.”

At first she didn’t move. Keeping her eyes on me as if determined to stay right were she was. But Souta, who had already noticed this and simply placed his hand under his chin and looked up. He looked like he was thinking something over.

“I hope the little guy gets up soon, I wouldn’t want him to miss his FIRST day of kindergarten.” He said to himself, loud enough for her to hear.

That’s when her eyes practically popped out of her head. “I can’t believe I almost forgot my own grandsons first day of kindergarten.” She said as she shot off the bed in inhumanly speed. “I’ve got to find that camera!” She was so excited that I was sure she had forgotten what had just happened to me. I turned to my brother who had moved to take my mothers place on my bed.

“Thanks Souta I owe you one.”

He winked and said, “No problem, besides I really couldn’t wake him up. He’s worse then you are Kags.”

“I am not that bad.”

“Really then tell me, how did mom have to wake you up this time.”

I tried to tackle him but he was already up and out of the room before I even had a chance. “Jerk.” I said as I got out of bed and stretched before heading into my bathroom to get ready.

Souta’s POV

As I placed the last of the pancakes onto Shippo’s plate, the smell of night blooming jasmine hit my nose and the sound of footsteps coming down the stairs quickly rang in my ears. I knew it was Kagome, and that she would be walking into the kitchen very soon. So I held a plate out just when she started to turn around the corner.

“Thanks.” Taking the plate from my hands. “Everything smells so good Souta.” She said as she walked over to take a seat next to Shippo, “Morning my love.” Placing a kiss on his forehead.

“Good morning mama.” Stuffing his mouth with more pancakes.

“Slow down Shippo or your going to choke.” She said giggling at her adopted sons eating habits. “Are you excited for your first day of school?”

“I sure am mama! Uncle Souta said that I will make a lot of new friends there.”

“Yes I did, but remember that I also said that you’re going there to learn.” I said as I took my seat in front of Kagome.

“Oh, yea. Hey mama are you taking me to school?” He said with curious eyes.

“No baby, not today. Uncle Souta and I need to get to school early to pick up our schedules. I’m sorry.”

“Its ok I understand. So who is taking me then?” Before she or I could answer a very excited voice was heard from the main hall.

“Grandma Akira is of course! And I will be taking lots of pictures for your mama! So come on we don‘t want you to be late ne?”

“Ok grandma I’m coming.” He bounced out of his chair and gave Kagome a hug goodbye. “I’ll see you later mama.”

“Have fun today. Make good friends.” she said finally letting him go. Before he left he turned to me and said.

“Later Uncle Souta.” Giving me a high five before rushing out the room. I couldn’t help but laugh. It was hard to believe it had been three years since Kagome adopted him and brought him into our lives. He was a refreshing new addition to this already crazy family. I was brought out of my thoughts when Kagome asked.

“Hey are you going to eat your toast?”

I looked at her plate that had been filled with eggs, sausage, bacon, hash-browns, and pancakes to see that it was already empty.

“How can you eat so much and still be able to keep in shape? Where does it all go?”

“Don’t be jealous Souta!” She said while she washed the dishes.

“I am not jealous Kagome. It’s just a wonder that you’re still so thin.” I said while dodging a wet rag. “What time is it?”

“7:15. Why?”

“We’re late come on I‘m driving.”
