Prologue

500 hundred years in the past

The council of elders were gathered around the oval table, all looking grave. Never before had the Demons, or Youkai as they preferred to be called, faced such dangerous times. As a species, the Demon population was relatively small compared to the human population, but never had they been this close to extinction.

"We are here to announce that we, the Council of Elders, have declared war on the Vampire. For an unknown reason, the Vampires have been slaughtering Demon female newborns, leading to a severe decrease in our already small population. They are also doing everything they can to prevent the mating union of adult Demons ,kidnapping  females after they have been recognized as a mate, but before they perform the mating ritual. For some unknown reason, once the female has mated, the Vampires seem uninterested in them any longer, however they are turning the females and mating them themselves. They have a higher rate of males being born than females and seek to steal ours is all we can think of."

Kaidan the Speaker of the Council sighed. What he was about to announce was a drastic attempt to save the Demons, but they could see no other way.

"In order to protect our female newborns, we have decided to place them with willing human families. The females will live as humans until they are recognized by their mate. If they are never recognized, they will live a normal human life with a human life span. Should they be recognized, their magic will be restored automatically and they will be able to mate immediately. Males will remain in our society,because they dont seem to be targets and  so that when they recognize their mate, at least one of the pair will understand what's happening". Kidan paused before continuing.

"Of course, only humans who are trustworthy will be honored with raising our beloved daughters and sisters, this means that humans will  have to  become our allies. They have need of an extensive education on our race and customs. The families that are being chosen will be educated on the breed of demon that they are entrusted with to raise. They have been made aware that there is a Royal Family and that we must protect them at all costs, for if the Royal Family dies out, our race will not survive. The arrangements for transporting newborn females have taken place, and the act will commence immediately. Are there any questions?"

Seeing no-one raise there hand, the Speaker grimly adjourned the meeting. At that exact moment, cries rang out. Their Queen had given birth to a boy... for the first time in Demon history, the future King may have to search among the humans for his queen.
