Summary: Sometimes you have to lose something to learn.

It hurt unlike anything she’d ever experienced. He’d been there in her heart since the moment she laid eyes on him and now… She didn’t know how to handle it, a loss so powerful it to brought her to her knees.

For as long as she could remember it felt like her heart beat only for him.

Her smile shined only for him.

She breathed only for him.

She lived for him.

Kagome fought back her tears at the sight of the one she’d loved for so long so happy in the arms of another. She’d known for a while that it wouldn’t work, that what she hoped and prayed for would never come to pass. This was simply the moment that made her face those painful facts that she’d tried for so long to ignore.

It was over, totally and completely over. Her heart no longer beat for him.

Her smile couldn’t shine for him.

Her love for him had breathed its last gasping breath.

She’d lived for him and now it felt like she was dead.

She looked around her, realizing for the first time in a long time that he wasn’t the only other person in the world. Just because she couldn’t have him didn’t mean she was destined forever to be alone.

Perhaps with time she could learn to love another.

But first she had to remember how to love Kagome.

Her heart would beat for no one but herself.

Her smile would shine for whoever she felt earned that privilege.

She would breathe deeply and hold her head up high.

She would learn to live again.

And then she would find love.
