Chapter 1: prologue

The first thing he noticed was her sapphire eyes. They seemed to draw him in, telling him that it was safe there. They reminded him of the ocean when one was swimming in it. The next thing that drew him to her was her black hair. Her hair made him look up at the midnight sky at night and think about her. Her voice soothed him when he was angry or upset at his father or mother. It was like being in the forest and hearing the wind whispering in his ear. Her laughter, her strength, the way her skin seemed to reflect the moon even in the darkest of days. Everything about her drew him in.

Sesshomaru soon found out that her name was Linali and she was the daughter of the lord of the east. And because she was the daughter of the inuyokai of the east, his father greatly approved. From what his father told him, inuyokai weren’t as strong as they used to be. Some had mated with humans. Others just died out. So for the great Inutaisho to hear about his son wanting to mate the beautiful Linali, he sent his son off.

Sesshomaru, prince of the west, showed up on their doorstep, holding a bouquet of white lilies, and the finest silk kimono’s made just for her. He calmly walked up to the black haired beauty, took her hand and spoke to her in a voice that would even make the strongest woman weak on her knees.

“I wish to court you till you are ready to become my mate.” He said before kissing her hand.

Linali smiled softly that could melt even the coldest winters. “Sesshomaru-sama, I would be honored to have you court me. If you win my heart, then I will mate you. But understand if you don’t, I wish for no harm feelings to befall us for I do not wish to betray either of our fathers by causing a feud over something as silly as courting.”

With just those words, Sesshomaru felt himself already falling in love with her.

**

It was snowing outside when Sesshomaru watched his mother take her last breath. She had been fighting a loosing battle for a very long time. The doctors didn’t know what caused the sickness, all they knew was that she wasn’t going to make it. But even though his mother died there in front of him, Sesshomaru did not cry.

Linali on the other hand cried for a day and a night. Only his warm embrace had comforted her a little.

“Why did she have to die Sesshomaru?” Linali whimpered that night in bed.

Sesshomaru stayed quiet as he continued to listen to his soon to be mate continued to weep.

“She seemed so beautiful, so strong… How could something as simple as a cold kill her?”

“Because,” He finally said, “even though we live longer, and are stronger, doesn’t mean we’re gods. We’re still mortal.”

For the rest of the night, Linali didn’t cry or even look at him.

**
When he reached two hundred years of age, Sesshomaru was furious. Rumors had been flying everywhere about his father taking in some human bitch as a mate. He could not allow such preposterous rumors get out of hand. Was it not his father who said to never take a human mate? Not only that, but if a hanyou was born, it would be a disgrace to the house of Inu. They were a proud family. A proud PURE family.

He could feel the weight of the fur that his father had placed on his shoulders. He could still hear his words echoing in his ears.

‘You are a prince of the west. One day you will be a Taiyokai. This fur on your shoulder symbolizes that of what you are. Wear it with pride. For one day, you will take over for me.’

He had everything he could ever want in life. He finally mated Linali after many, many years, he was strong, powerful, and feared among many, and one day, he would take over his father’s place. So how dare the servants and the guards spread such gossip. How could his father even stand it?

“Father.” He said, short and clip as he walked into his study. “Are you aware of the words that come out of the servant’s mouth? They speak of betrayal all because of a rumor.”

Inutaisho sighed and closed his book. It seemed like he would never finish that book without being interrupted. “Sesshomaru, you should never let rumors bother you. They will never attack me or raise a hand against me. As long as you know the truth yourself, it should never bother you.”

Sesshomaru’s eyes narrowed. “Then tell me father, what is the truth?”

Once more the great Inuyokai sighed. “Her name is Izayoi.”

Instantly fury ran though the yokai’s veins. “So their not rumors?” He snarled. “You are mated to a human?!”

“There is no reason to be angry my son.”

“There is more reason to be angry then your senseless clam nature right now!” Shouted Sesshomaru.

“Then tell me why your so angry Sesshomaru. What about this whole ordeal upsets you?”

Already the prince was seeing red out of the corner of his eyes. “You mate a weak, pathetic human, and dishonored our house. That is what upsets me!”

“Sesshomaru don’t!”

Before he knew it, he felt the warm, calming embrace of the love of his life. “Linali?” He whispered, feeling himself instantly calming down.

“Don’t be made with Inutaisho-sama.” She held him tighter. “Please don’t Sesshomaru.”

He couldn’t help but to hear the distress in her voice. With a defeated sigh, he broke her arms from him, and turned to leave. “We are not done yet.” With that he stormed off.

**
Not a year later, he found out why Linali was hanging around his father and not himself. Someone was hunting her, and Sesshomaru was the last one to find out about it. She went missing for a week when Inutaisho finally allowed Sesshomaru to go and find her. When he did, it was much too late.

Linali lay in his arms, smiling and slowly dying. Now that he recalled, it rained during that day as she died.

“Sesshomaru…” She whispered, reaching out to him and touching his cheeks.

He reached over and cupped her hand with his. “Why didn’t you come to me Linali? I could have watched over you. Protected you from this.”

She smiled and shook her head as the water droplets fell onto her perfectly white skin. “Because I don’t love you Sesshomaru.” She said softly. “I never did. The only reason why I agreed to mate you was because how much you resembled your father. The truth was, I was in love with your father not you.”

Already he could feel his heart breaking, tearing.

Linali looked up at the falling rain and smiled once more. Her warm smile that reminded him of the sunrise. “Your so cruel Sesshomaru. Instead of comforting me, you would make things worse. You may fall in love, but you’ll never be loved back. Not till you truly fall in love.” With that her life finally came to an end, leaving him feeling emptier then ever before. Right then, he swore he would never fall in love again. For the first time, he cried.

**
The night was clear, and the thick smell of blood was high in the air. He stared at his father, as he stood there, covered in wounds that he probably would never heal from.

“Why are you being so foolish?” Sesshomaru asked his father. His tone was no longer angry, but sounded bored. The truth was, was that he just didn’t care anymore. He would become stronger then his father, and possibly kill him himself. That is, if he lived though the night.

Inutaisho turned and looked at his son. “Tell me Sesshomaru, do you have someone to protect?”

‘I did.’ He said in his own mind. ‘But she was ripped away from me before I could even protect her.’

“Your speaking nonsense.” He said simply. After all, he would never protect anyone again. If they couldn’t protect themselves, then they were not worthy of living among others.

Inutaisho cracked a smile. “One day Sesshomaru, you will know what I speak of.” With that he transformed into his true form and ran off, leaving Sesshomaru with the feeling of loneliness once more.

“I will not be as weak as you were father.” He said to no one in particular. “I will surpass you in skill, strength, and power. I refuse to make the same mistakes that you did.” With that promise hanging in the air, Sesshomaru turned and walked off into the night. His heart was incased in stone, never to break out of its confines again.
