A Meeting By Chance

The restaurant was filled with quiet conversation. Just loud enough that the patrons felt their conversations would not be overheard and also quiet enough that speaking normally would permit a conversation. One table tucked away in the back corner was an exception, most of its occupants having consumed more than their share of alcohol spoke loudly, and without restraint.

"Common Sesshoumaru, relax!" Slurred the youkai in a deep red dress shirt, as he slung his arm over the others shoulders. A cold look from golden eyes sent the arm flying back to its owner's side. The owner of this arm was not fazed by the rejection as it was a common occurrence between the two. His hair was relatively neat and its silvery color matched nicely with the white dog ears on the top of his head.

"If I had know you where going to insist on making a fool of yourself, Inuyasha, I would not have come." His voice was cold, and the irritation that flashed through his eyes clearly expressed his distaste for the situation. His looks were similar to that of the hanyou sitting next to him, but his hair was longer, the color more vibrant and his face appeared more mature. He was dressed simply black dress pants and a deep silver gray dress shirt that made his skin look porcelain white.

Inuyasha continued to flirt with the other ladies at the table despite his obvious interest in the one called Kikyou. Both Koga and Miroku were giving him dirty looks as he dominated the conversation and the three ladies at the table. Sesshoumaru, however, brushed his long sliver hair from his face as he lost himself in thought. Having been dragged to this group mixer with pleas and promises of 'a good time,' he had finally relented. It wasn't often that he attended gatherings of his own choice and he rarely did anything for his younger brother, half brother, he corrected himself quickly. He must never forget that the hanyou acting like a pathetic drunk in the seat next to him was only related through the blood of their father.

The short exchange between the youkais had caught the attention of a woman at the other end of the table. As Sesshoumaru lost himself in thought, her blue eyes gazed at him gently. Her eyes traveled over him taking in his startling physic. The way his silver hair shimmered in the dim light, and the way this eyes gave hits at the emotions he kept from his face. He raised his eyes to meet hers. Quickly she blushed and looked away, embarrassed at being caught. Inwardly, Sesshoumaru sighed, but gave her a pleasant smile, he hated it when women fawned over him, but she was pretty and seemed unsure about her present circumstance.

He watched as the same women tried unsuccessfully to fend off the advances of both Koga and Miroku who were trying much too hard to win her favor. Miroku, he thought, seemed much too interested in anything female to have come from a long line of monks, as he so claimed. Koga, on the other hand was oblivious to the advances of Ayame. He recalled her hesitant introduction from the beginning of the meal and chuckled softly as she muttered softy in response to the wolf youkai's question. As he rose from his seat and passed her he leaned in close and whispering softly asked, "Could I get you a drink?" He looked pointedly at Koga as he did so; he would never tire of showing up and humiliating Inuyasha's friends.

"I guess so..." the response trailed off.

The woman sitting next to her gave a playful shove and giggled, "She means she would be delighted."

"Kikyou," he heard the girl whine as he continued across the room to the bar.

Sesshoumaru watched her from afar as he waited for the bartender to pass him the drinks.

"I can't believe you just said that. You're the worst cousin EVER!"

"You'll be thanking me later Kagome." She gave a playful smile and a wink before turning towards the others, jumping straight back into the conversation.

Kagome sighed, why she allowed herself to be talked into this she would never understand. Sure, she had friends, and she got along fine with others but Kikyou was far more social than she was. A frown crossed her face and she fiddled with her hair recalling her high school years. Kikyou was forever popular, surrounded by admirers, and always at parties, while she studied and kept a part-time job. She had never blamed her cousin, that's just how she was, but at times she was jealous. Jealous of how her hair was never out of place, Kagome ran her figures nervously through her dark hair at the thought. Of how her make up was always perfect and lasted the entire night, a quick glance at her reflection in the glass of the table top confirmed hers was gone. Before she could continue her train of thought she heard the clink of a glass hitting the table.

"Here," the silver hair youkai stated before going to take his seat. Kagome looked shakily at the drink in front of her, she wasn't a big drinker. Noting her apprehensive look he reached across the table "It's perfectly safe," and swapped her glass for his, "Drink."

Slowly she sipped the amber liquid and found it to be an expensive whisky. Her glass returned to the table still with much of its contents, his was empty. At the same time Inuyasha slammed another empty beer mug onto the table. Both youkai and human gave him looks that clearly questioned his sanity.

"Karaoke," he all but hollered at the table. "Common, I haven't been in ages."

At this gold eyes met blue and both parties nodded slightly; he had just confirmed their suspicions. Sesshoumaru then resisted the urge to roll his eyes. "Half Breed, we're not in high school any more, grow up."

"Aw Sessh," the full youkai flinched at the nickname, "don't be such a spoil sport."

"Yeah, we all wanna go," came the voices of the drunken wolf youkai Koga, and the now self proclaimed monk Miroku.

"KARAOKE TIME!" squealed Kikyou and Ayame together clapping their hands together like they had reverted back to six year olds.

"Fine," sighed Sesshoumaru, "you can all go Karaoke." This is just like babysitting, he thought as the entire table rose and made their way to the elevator. Placing a few large bills on the table, he saw Kagomes eyes open wide. "I saw this coming," he stated, "I had Inuyasha give me money beforehand." It was a lie, but she easily believed him. He gave a small sigh of relief; he didn't want her to discover just how much money he had.

"Finish up," he motioned for her to finish her drink. Kagome tossed the rest of it back then placed the glass softly on the table, her head now buzzed lightly and this seemed to push her shyness to the back of her mind.

The two approached the rest of the group waiting for the elevator, most of who had broken into song. This got them many glares and disapproving looks from the workers and guests of the restaurant.

When the elevator finally arrived the group piled in, Sesshoumaru and Kagome entering last. Reaching over to push the button to close the doors the youkai felt a pair of hands plant firmly on his back and shove him through the doors. Once he regained his footing the door had closed and the elevator had left.

"Dead," he said venom dripping from his voice. "The half breed is dead."

"Only if I don't get to him first," the soft voice came from behind him.

"Kagome?" his voice held a hint of surprise, mixed with more anger. He turned to look at her.

"Yeah, I guess him and my cousin thought we where ‘hitting it off'."

He chuckled, she glared at him. "I guess it only takes a little anger for you to get over your shyness," his voice betrayed how amused he was, as he held his hands up in defense. Kagome turned red and muttered something, his sensitive youkai ears couldn't pick up.

When the next elevator came he let her go in first, her blush deepened as she stepped inside. The ride down the twenty one floors to the lobby was silent, both parties plotting the death of the hanyou. To both their dismay when they stepped out, the group was nowhere in sight, apparently they had seen it fit to go karaoke without them.

"Oh no," Sesshoumaru looked at her puzzled, he hadn't though she wanted to go with them. In fact she had seemed completely against the idea. "Kikyou has the car keys."

"I will drive you home." By the time she understood what it was he had said he was halfway to his car and she had to run to catch up.

"I'm really sorry to bother you like this." She sounded worried.

"It's fine." He opened her door. "Besides, it's not your fault."

Kagome sat down, and buckled her seat belt as she marveled at his car. It was obviously an Aston Martin, the sleek lines that gave the car its sophisticated look gave that much away. The inside was just as nice, leather interior, heated seats, automatic temperature control, this car had it all. There were only two seats, which made sense with his demeanor he didn't strike her as one who would drive around a bunch of his friends.

"Wow," her voice was soft, "nice ride."

"Hn."

*****

"Thanks for driving me home." He didn't respond, so she stepped out of the car carefully. As she turned to walk to the doors of the building she heard his voice, but it was too soft to make anything out.

"Sorry, I couldn't hear you."

"Your number?" It was more of a statement than a question.

She thought about it for a second; he was nice and had been a gentleman the entire night. She scribbled her cell number onto a business card and passed it to him before retreating into the building.

Something passed through Sesshoumaru's eyes as he placed the card in his pocket and drove off into the dark streets.

Tis the first chapter! Let me know what you think.
