Sneaking a Peek by SunsetMiko

Welcome Back

Chapter 77 - Welcome Back

Inuyasha was just about to go searching for his miko when he sensed Sesshoumaru's approach. The couple landed a few feet in front of the hanyou, who was both extremely worried and very frustrated.

"Where the hell have you been, wench?" he demanded angrily.

"We got a room," Kagome said snidely. "It was your suggestion." She didn't appreciate Inuyasha's accusatory tone. She hadn't done anything wrong and she would not be apologetic about having a night off from jewel shard hunting.

"I didn't tell you to stay gone all night! We're on a quest here, damn it, and you're wasting time."

"Oh, shut it, Inuyasha. It didn't matter whether I came back last night or this morning. We don't travel after dark anyway."

"Well, you still should have come back," Inuyasha hollered. He hadn't slept a wink the entire night, worried that something had happened to her. It was his responsibility to protect her after all, and he wasn't ready to give that job over to Sesshoumaru, no matter how much the taiyoukai cared about her. He'd been worried sick, but of course he couldn't say that to his miko, so he yelled at her instead.

"Well, I didn't, so get over it."

Kagome glanced around the campsite, curious what the others thought of her temporary disappearance. Miroku had a lecherous, knowing grin on his face and the miko blushed. The monk clearly had an idea about what she and Sesshoumaru had done while they were gone and he might even have been right. Sango had a small smile and a blush of her own, making it clear that she had similar thoughts to Miroku, even though she would never admit such a thing out loud.

Jaken merely scowled at her, but then that's about the only expression she ever saw on the little toad's face. He wasn't happy with the situation in general, disapproved of their relationship, but he kept his mouth shut, knowing that to speak his thoughts would mean a great deal of pain.

The children looked thrilled that she had returned and she smiled brightly at them, opening her arms. She was done fighting with Inuyasha, whether he thought so or not. Shippo and Rin quickly made their way to her side as she knelt to hug them both. "I didn't worry you guys, did I?" she asked.

"No," Shippo replied. "We knew you were safe with Sesshoumaru."

"Yes, Lord Sesshoumaru would always keep you safe, Kagome. We had nothing to worry about."

Kagome's smile widened as she looked up at the taiyoukai, whose chest was puffed out with pride. Inuyasha huffed and turned his back to the couple. This whole thing was taking a lot of getting used to and he was having a harder and harder time the more serious their relationship got. Now they'd spent the night together, alone, and he could only imagine the things they had done together, not that he wanted that mental image in his mind.

"Well, now that the wench is back, let's get this show on the road!"

The miko sighed at the hanyou's gruff attitude but rose to her feet. "I'll start breakfast," she said, hoping that Inuyasha would calm down soon. She understood why he was upset, and if they were in a different time, she would have called to tell him she was safe but not returning until morning. As it was, though, the Feudal Era was sorely lacking in telephones. She knew she'd worried her best friend unnecessarily, that she'd been selfish in wanting to stay the night in comfort, but she'd enjoyed herself and she found it difficult to regret it. He would get over it eventually.
