Chapter 60 - Two Wishes

*To the Lake of Stars* (Stella's Soundtrack Challenge)

"Tell me, Kagome," Sesshoumaru started as the pair sat beside one another by the fire roaring in the fireplace. She had finally stopped shivering, which was a blessing in his eyes. He'd been quite worried that she would fall ill from her exposure to the rain. "Are we truly made of stardust?"

The miko smiled. "We are. Everything is. When a star dies, it explodes and sends material all through the universe. Those tiny elements are what we're made of. It's rather complicated," she explained.

"How many stars are there?" he asked, thinking of the last time he'd looked up at the night sky.

"Too many to count. Did you know the sun is really a star? It's just so much closer than the rest that it seems different, brighter. Without the sun, we'd all freeze to death and the whole planet would die. And the sun doesn't really move. We're moving around it. Our planet spins, which is what makes the days and the nights, and we're circling the sun, which causes the seasons."

"How do your people know all of this?" he asked in confusion.

"We've actually gone into space and seen the planet from above. It's beautiful."

"You have done this?" the taiyoukai inquired, shocked.

"No," she said with a laugh. "I haven't been to space but I've seen pictures taken from space. It's amazing, what you can see, all the lights from people's homes, from cities. The blue of the oceans, the snow at the poles. The world is incredible. The whole universe is."

"Your knowledge is incredible," he said in awe. "I... I am sorry for the assumption Inuyasha made," Sesshoumaru said softly. He'd been thinking about it quite a lot. If he hadn't pushed her, if they hadn't done more than she originally intended, the hanyou wouldn't have gotten so upset and said such horrible things. "I am sorry that last night did not go as you planned it. I should not have been so forward."

Kagome laughed. "You didn't do anything I didn't want, Sesshoumaru. You don't have to apologize for Inuyasha being a jerk. He'll get over his little hissy fit and realize what an ass he was. He's probably already out looking for me. He lets his mouth overload his ass pretty frequently." Her face fell slightly as she remembered his words. "But he usually isn't quite so mean."

"He is afraid of losing you and he fears you will be hurt by this Sesshoumaru."

*A Wish For the Stars* (Stella's Soundtrack Challenge)

"I imagine I will, eventually, but it's my choice to risk that, not his," she said matter-of-factly.

"You believe that I will hurt you?" Sesshoumaru asked in utter confusion. This was different than trying to understand the concept of space and stars. This was her heart she was putting out there, expecting to have it broken. He had no intention of doing so and he wondered why she thought he would.

"Eventually. It's not as if you can mate a human. You'll need an inu demoness as your mate, one that can give you strong, full demon offspring. That doesn't mean you can't spend a good bit of time with me first. You have all the time in the world. I knew all of that going into this and I'm okay with it."

Sesshoumaru fell silent, absorbing everything she'd just said. She was willing to be with him for a long period of time, all the while believing that at some point he would leave her to do his duty to his lands and take an appropriate mate. She was stronger than he gave her credit for.

Could he tell her she was wrong? Could he explain that he didn't care that she was human, that he wanted to mate her anyway? Was she ready to hear such a thing? He didn't think so and he didn't wish to frighten her away. But could he allow her to continue to think such a thing? That he would be with her until he found the right person or lost interest? It was so wrong, so far from the truth. He had to think about this some more.

How he wished he could ask someone's opinion. If only he believed in wishing on stars like she had had him do once before. He would wish for the right answer to this situation, the right course of action.

Little did he know that at that moment, Kagome was wishing for something as well. She was wishing that she could be the one for him, the only one. Her heart had been lost fully and completely to the taiyoukai and she knew how devastating it would be when he finally left her. If only he didn't have to.
