Chapter 52 - For the Night

By the time the pair went back inside, everyone but Inuyasha had retired for the evening. The hanyou gave his half-brother a suspicious look before returning his gaze to the fire. He still didn't trust the taiyoukai or his intentions with the miko. He knew Kagome was wonderful in so many different ways, but he couldn't believe that his human-hating sibling could see it as well. He still thought Sesshoumaru was after something else and he feared that she would be hurt when his true intentions came to the surface.

Kagome yawned and Sesshoumaru smirked. "You are tired. Come, I will show you to your room."

"And then you'll leave her there," Inuyasha muttered quietly so that the miko couldn't hear his words, a sour look on his face.

Sesshoumaru ignored the hanyou's comment and led Kagome to the best room in the cabin, his room. It had the most luxurious bedding and the thought of her sleeping in his bed pleased him. That was where she belonged, after all. Even though he knew she would be sleeping alone, she would be in his bed, in his cabin. He was providing shelter and comfort to the woman he intended to make his mate, something his instincts demanded he do.

"I can't sleep in here," Kagome said softly, not wanting to disturb her friends in the nearby rooms. "This has to be your room."

"You will sleep in here," he declared.

"But there's another open room down the hall," she argued.

"I will not be sleeping this evening," he explained. "I believe Inuyasha and I need to have a talk. I desire for you to take my room. The scent of you will seep into the bedding. I will be able to smell you for a great while after this night." Sure, it wasn't really a lie. He would be able to smell her, if he had any intention of going back to the cabin after this.

"You planning on leaving us?" Kagome asked nervously. She didn't like the idea of him leaving their group, leaving her. She was falling for him more and more by the day, even though it made her nervous as hell. He'd assuaged some of her fears minutes before when he promised not to hurt her, even though she still believed that there was no way he could promise such a thing. Just the knowledge that he did not intend to break her heart was reassuring. It could still happen in the future, but at least she felt as if she had more time.

She had to keep reminding herself not to fall in love with the taiyoukai. He could never have a permanent relationship with her. He was the Lord of the West. He couldn't mate a human. That didn't mean he couldn't be with her for a good long time though, which was what she was hoping for. Not falling in love was hard though. He was so sweet and so much fun too.

"I will never leave your side," he told her.

"Then why care if your bed smells like me?" she teased. "You won't have the opportunity to enjoy it."

"Perhaps not, but the knowledge that you are sleeping in my bed is enough."

"That sounds so dirty," she said with a smirk.

"It is not as if I am asking to join you," he purred, "though I am sorely tempted."

"I'll bet you are," Kagome flirted. "I might even be tempted to let you." Sesshoumaru's eyes widened and the miko laughed. "Could you behave yourself?"
