Chapter 51 - Confession

Kagome smiled as she followed Sesshoumaru outside. The rain had finally stopped a little more than an hour ago and he'd asked to speak with her in private. In truth, he just wanted a moment alone with her. Her friends had been hogging her attention since they arrived and he was more than a little jealous.

When the moonlight hit her dark hair, it reflected blue and Sesshoumaru found himself entranced by her beauty once more. She looked like a beautiful flower, blooming in the moonlight, and he couldn't take his eyes off of her.

She waited for a minute as he stared before it began to make her uncomfortable. "Did... Did you want something, Sesshoumaru?" she asked, hoping to break the strange silence.

He really didn't have anything to say to her. He'd just wanted her attention. Now he had no idea what to do. He would look ridiculous, like a petty child, if he admitted what he'd done, and so he quickly hurried to come up with something, anything to say to her. Finally, an idea struck him and he clung to it.

"I thought perhaps you would like to see the moon. It is nearly full."

Kagome studied his face as he spoke and grinned. "That's not what you were going to say."

A new idea came to mind and he went with it instead of arguing, hoping to distract her. "You never did answer my question before," he said, cursing his mind for not having thought of that first. It would have been much better than the silly moon that she saw every night.

"What question?" she asked in confusion.

"If being your boyfriend gives me free access to your lips." He stepped closer and cupped her cheek gently and he saw it instantly as she became uncomfortable. He pulled away in frustration. He still wasn't making any real progress! "Why do you get so nervous when I touch you?" he asked. The last time she'd looked that way was when he'd commented on how much he enjoyed holding her hand.

"I... I'm not nervous."

"Do not lie to me. You looked almost as if you were ready to panic."

Kagome sucked in a breath, steeling her nerves. "Look, Inuyasha broke my heart, and I don't mean broke it in half. I mean he shattered it like I shattered the jewel. I... I'm not used to this, this romantic stuff. I don't know what to say. I don't know how to act."

"You certainly play as if you do."

"See, that's different. When we flirt, it doesn't feel serious, but when you look at me like that, it freaks me out."

"I see," Sesshoumaru replied. "Would you wish for me to stop?" Silently he prayed she would say no, because he didn't think he could give her up. She was the one he wanted and no one else would do.

"No," she said slowly. "I like you, I really do. It's just scary, I guess, risking my heart again."

"Sesshoumaru closed the distance between them once more and caressed her cheek with his knuckles. "I will not hurt you, Kagome. I promise."

"You can't promise that. It doesn't work that way. You could decide you're tired of flirting with me and move on."

"I am not going anywhere," he assured her. "No one has ever made this Sesshoumaru feel anything but you."

Kagome looked up at the sky and sighed. "Look," she said in surprise. "A shooting star. Make a wish."

Sesshoumaru looked up as well before returning his eyes to the insecure beauty he desired to make his mate. "I wish to kiss you," he said softly.

The miko smiled. "That's not what I meant. If you say your wish out loud it won't come true," she said in her teasing tone.

"Is that so?" he asked. "I was unaware."

"Well, then I guess I'll give you a do-over," she said, lifting up on her toes. She pressed her lips to his cheek and when she began to pull away, he caught hers with his own. His fingers wound into her hair as he kissed her with all the passion he'd been holding back, hoping that she would begin to understand just how deeply he felt for her.

When they finally pulled apart, Kagome's cheeks were a brilliant red. "Wow," she whispered.

"Indeed," he replied. "And for once there are no rude sounds."

Kagome couldn't help but laugh and Sesshoumaru smirked, thrilled to have made her make that beautiful sound again.
