Chapter 44 - Too Soon

Kagome had no idea why one of the servers gave her such a dark look as they passed, or why another one's eyes was misting over with tears, but she had a sneaking suspicion it had something to do with Sesshoumaru and his conversation with the business owner. Once they were outside, she turned to him with a raised brow, and expression he mirrored back to her. The miko giggled and caught his hand, tugging him away from the others.

"What in the world did you do?" she asked once they were alone. "Why were the servers so upset?"

Sesshoumaru looked from their interlocked hands to her face and back. She tried to pull away, suddenly feeling strangely exposed, as if she'd done something terribly wrong. He stopped her, holding her hand gently. "I rather enjoy touching you like this," he said with a smirk.

"Are you telling me you've never held hands before?" she asked in shock, forgetting all about her previous question.

"Why would I do so?" he inquired. He'd never had a relationship before so he had never had cause to hold the hand of a female before either. It was... nice. It felt comforting and her smaller hand fit so well in his larger one it made him think that she was made just for him. He didn't get nearly enough opportunities to touch her, as she hadn't yet requested another massage as he'd hoped she would. Perhaps she would allow him to hold her hand as they walked from now on.

"I don't know. It's just weird that you haven't. You really like it?" she asked, blushing slightly at the way he was studying their interlocked hands.

"If I could, I would keep your hand in mine every moment of every day," he purred, stepping closer. He brushed his fingers over her pink cheek with a small smile before catching her other hand. He shifted the way he held the first and brought them both up to kiss her knuckles softly.

Kagome was stunned silent for several long moments, her brain searching for some kind of snide comeback. Things were getting far too serious and she needed to lighten the mood. Finding nothing, Kagome was relieved when she suddenly sensed a jewel shard coming in their direction. That would at least serve as a temporary distraction. A battle would be better than this awkwardly intimate situation. Her relief was short-lived, however, when she recognized the aura of the demon approaching them. This was going to get messy quickly.

Desperate to save her stupid friend from certain death, the miko tightly gripped Sesshoumaru's hands and looked up into his eyes. "You will not kill him, do you understand me?" she said in a threatening tone, wanting to impart the importance of her words.

The taiyoukai was confused as he gave her a questioning look. Just whom was she referring to? Inuyasha hadn't said a word about their budding relationship in days for fear of being sat. Who else would he be prohibited from killing? He was about to find out, as a whirlwind blew into the clearing.
