Chapter 42 - Attacked

It happened so fast. They were simply walking along, minding their own business and enjoying the beautiful early summer day, when they were attacked. A large group of boar demons descended upon them and the group quickly formed a circle around Kagome, protecting both the miko and the jewel shards she held.

She hated it when they did that, acting as if she was completely inept at fighting. She could shoot arrows fairly well now, as she'd been practicing all she could, but they still treated her like a child in need of protection. The miko grumbled her frustration and settled for watching the show.

The taiyoukai was determined to take care of this little inconvenience. He ached to show Kagome what a good protector he could be. He'd tried once before, an incident that ended with her being sick from the gore, and so he decided he could do better this time. Sesshoumaru shoved Inuyasha back, ordering him to protect the miko, and headed out to confront their enemies.

The hanyou wasn't happy about it, but since they were surrounded on all sides, he did as instructed. Kagome and the shards were of the utmost importance and he refused to allow anything to happen to her. His elder half-brother could handle these enemies. It was clear he wanted to show off and this time the hanyou would let him. He remembered the last time the taiyoukai had done so and he was hoping for a similar result. Kagome's weak stomach would be the perfect thing to end her attraction to the vicious demon Lord.

Kagome watched as Sesshoumaru stepped out and went head to head with the first boar demon brave enough to approach him. Instead of using his claws or his poison whip, the taiyoukai went with his speed and disappeared, reappearing behind his enemy. He quickly snapped the boar's neck, tossing him aside before turning to the next. He looked like a god of war as he fought, not a single motion wasted, his gorgeous body appearing and disappearing faster than her eyes could keep up with. His inconceivable speed made his task look easy and she was definitely impressed, but mostly thankful that he was taking a bloodless approach so far.

Inuyasha held his sword out in front of him, warning off the other boars from attacking, while Miroku brandished sutras and Sango held her boomerang almost as a shield. Shippo clung to Kagome's legs, frightened but still determined to keep the miko safe.

Sesshoumaru moved so quickly that the other demons didn't have a chance to approach the tight circle protecting their target, and they were quickly dispatched one by one, each with their neck snapped. Everyone went limp with relief when the final enemy died, moving away from the miko so that she could breathe freely once more.

"Are you all right?" Sesshoumaru asked her even though he knew no boar had gotten near her. She still might be frightened and he wanted to be the one to soothe her if necessary.

Kagome smirked at the taiyoukai, glancing over at the pile of dead boars to her right. "Someone learned their lesson, huh?"

"Excuse me?"

"Bloodless is definitely the way to go," she said with a smile. "I hate all the blood and guts flying around. When Inuyasha hits enemies with the windscar they disintegrate. When I shoot them with a purifying arrow they poof into dust. You're always so sloppy, even though you almost never get anything on you."

"The only time I did soil my clothing with blood, it was on purpose," he confessed, stepping closer to the miko.

"Oh, did you think I didn't know that?" she asked with a smirk, leaning into the taiyoukai. "Look, I know you're all powerful. You don't have to keep proving it to me."

It was Sesshoumaru's turn to smirk as she acknowledged his strength. It made his chest swell up with pride, making Kagome laugh.

"Don't let your head get too big now. I've seen you seriously injured too."

"That happened under extenuating circumstances," he assured her.

"Sure it did. Don't worry, tough guy. I know you can protect me. You don't have to do it all on your own."

"What if I want to?" he asked her.

Kagome merely smiled. If he wanted to take over the position of her primary protector, he'd have to fight that one out with Inuyasha. She was not going to get involved in that dispute.
