Chapter 29 - Rescued

Kagome ran, her heart pounding in her ears and her mind racing faster than her feet. What was she doing? What in the world was going to happen when the taiyoukai chasing her finally captured her? Had she lost her mind?! She'd stopped flirting with him because he was so unpredictable, because she had no idea what it would bring about.

While playing with him had been fun, seeing him pout when she stopped was even more so. The best part, however, was when she finally gave him what he so obviously craved. He'd looked so shocked when she finally flirted again before he got that heated look that made her quiver. He told her to run and so she did, but now she was seriously questioning that decision.

From his place not far behind her, Sesshoumaru could sense her conflicted emotions. She was a confusing creature, hot and cold, always keeping him guessing. He wondered what she was so afraid of. He had no intention of hurting her when he finally decided to end the chase. And how could someone be both afraid and excited at the same time? Humans made no sense; of that he was certain.

The miko paid no attention to the direction she ran, knowing that Sesshoumaru would be able to lead her back to their camp once they were finished. When they were finished with what, however, she had no idea. Did he intend to attempt to have sex with her when he caught her?

There was no way she was spreading her legs for him without knowing what kind of relationship they would have. She would not be a one night stand! Hell, she wouldn't spread her legs for him even if he confessed to being deeply and undyingly in love with her. They weren't even friends, barely acquaintances, and that was not the kind of person she was. No, she wanted to have dated the person for a good long time before giving them her virginity. She didn't love him. Sure, he did something to her that she didn't understand, made her feel ways that were scary and new, but that wasn't enough.

Sesshoumaru quickly took in their location, checking as he often did for dangers, both living and non-living, and his eyes widened. They were approaching a cliff-side, a deep canyon just in the distance, and in the direction Kagome was running. At the speed she was moving, and as clumsy as she was, there was no way she would be able to stop in time. He could not lose her when he'd only just gotten her back!

The taiyoukai sped up, pushing himself to his limits. He should never have allowed the miko to get so far ahead of him! He was terrified that he wouldn't make it in time; that he would be forced to jump down into the crevasse and collect her bloody, broken corpse. Of course, he could bring her back to life with the Tenseiga, but the last thing he wanted was to be the cause of her death, and what a painful death it would be. No, he had to save her.

Kagome was running blindly when she saw that the ground up ahead ended suddenly. She dug in her heels in an attempt to stop but she was moving too fast and skidded along, trying desperately not to fall over the edge. Just as she was about to plunge to what she was certain was her death, a sharp pain in her head caught her attention and she screeched in agony, not realizing that she was no longer moving forward.

The pain ended and the miko whirled on the taiyoukai behind her. "My hair?! Did you have to pull my hair?"

Sesshoumaru was stunned by Kagome's reaction. He'd just saved her from a painful fall and certain death and she was yelling at him?

"You were going to fall," he replied flatly.

"Well, yeah," she said, her temper cooling slightly. "But did you have to grab me by my hair?!"

It was Kagome's turn to be stunned when Sesshoumaru pulled her into his arms and kissed her passionately, successfully ending both her complaints and her anger.

'This is nice,' was all she could think. 'Much better than bouncing down a cliff side.'
