 Facing the Consequences

He had been called many things in his long lifetime, but this was the first time it had actually hit home in any way, shape or form.  So against his better judgement, severe misgivings, and the outraged roaring of his beast, he allowed this appointment to take place.

Sesshoumaru sat in the visitors waiting room as he watched Hayato lead Kagome, followed by Shun, off to a small room for a controlled visitation with the hanyou.  He had told Shun that he would not be held responsible for his actions if Inuyasha got out of hand, therefore he felt it was best if he did not see the hanyou.  However, he gave Shun his permission to do whatever was necessary to protect Kagome, including killing the little bastard.

‘Bloodthirsty, cruel, savage.  Yes, I had been called those things and more when I slaughtered the armies of humans that invaded my  lands more than three quarters of a millenium  ago.  The words never bothered me.  I heard them and was unconcerned, they rolled off my back like water off a duck.’

He had made sure that his cell phone number was the only one on the contact sheet when the deranged hanyou had been admitted to the facility.  For a number of weeks he had been receiving updates about Inuyasha’s condition and answering questions the doctors had concerning his past history.  He would then relate what he considered to be anything of importance to Kagome, Shun, and the rest of the pack.

They had returned to the shiro rather late after having dinner out one night last week.  Shun had headed towards the home theater to start the new dvd that Kagome wanted to see, while she went to make popcorn.  Everything was normal until Kagome noticed the blinking light on the house phone answering machine, and pressed the play button.

‘Brutal, merciless, sadistic.  Those words had also not affected me.  The spies and assassins had attacked either this Sesshoumaru directly or threatened the western lands.  The fate they received was what they had purchased with their duplicity.’

The caller was one of the associate doctors from the facility the hanyou had been committed to after his attack on Kagome.  He wanted someone to return his call about setting up a visit between Inuyasha and Kagome.  He had the balls to state that he felt it would be helpful for Inuyasha to face the consequences of his actions.

He could sense the apprehension in her aura while she listened to the message, and thought about what the voice on the tape was saying.  He had already told the doctors several times that he would not allow Kagome to visit the hanyou until he was well on his way to recovery.  He would make sure this incompetent fool was reassigned to another facility.

‘Ruthless, barbarous, monstrous.  Some more words screamed at me by various beings, both youkai and human, when I began my quest to become greater than my sire and longed for the power of supreme conquest.’

Sesshoumaru already knew what her answer would be, even before she opened her mouth to speak.  Kagome would forgive the hanyou and want to go visit him, especially if she believed the message left on the machine.  She was too forgiving for her own good, and always believed the best about beings whether they were human or youkai.  He had seen it happen way too many times.  There were very few beings Kagome could not somehow manage to forgive.

He had gotten Hayato involved to do an evaluation of Inuyasha’s state of mind before anything else was even talked about.  Seshoumaru had made many phone calls and threats before he finally allowed the visit to be scheduled.  All possible precautions were to be taken; the hanyou was to be heavily sedated, restrained at all times, one of Inuyasha’s doctors and at least two guards were to be present.

‘Demon, ferocious, wicked, inhuman.  As youkai I was used to hearing these words from a young age shouted at me by the humans I encountered.  Usually as they turned tail and ran from me before I killed them.

Kagome was nervous as she followed Hayato towards what appeared to be a small consultation room.  She looked up at Shun as she took a step closer to his side.  His arm tightened around her waist as they continued walking.

“Princess, you don’t have to do this if you don’t want to.  You are allowed to change your mind.”  Shun spoke to her quietly; he could sense her apprehension and feel the tenseness in her body.  This was the first time since the incident that she would be face to face with her attacker.

“It’s okay Shun, I can handle this.  I’ll have to see him sometime, sooner or later.  I just need another minute to calm down.”  Kagome was still somewhat upset that Sesshoumaru had been so adamant about not wanting her to visit Inuyasha until he decided that the hanyou was more stable.  If the doctors felt that it would help Inuyasha with his treatment, she wanted to see him get the help he needed.

Hayato reached for the door handle.  “He is correct, Kagome, you can change your mind, it will not be a problem.”  He hesitated, waiting for her answer.

Kagome looked at him, glanced at the door, then looked at Shun again.  “I’ll be alright.  Let’s get this over with.  You’ll stay here Shun, you’ll be close by?”

Shun leaned down and kissed the top of her head.  “I’ll wait right here Princess.  I’ll be just outside the door, and Hayato will go inside with you.”

Kagome took a deep breath, then followed Hayato into the room.  Inuyasha was already there with one of his doctors, and two guards were standing behind him.  One look told her that he had been heavily sedated, his eyes were calm and glassy, his face expressionless.  It took a minute for her heartbeat to calm down, until she realized that he was also restrained.  He was wearing youkai restraints, the arm cuffs and collar were just visible under the hospital issued shirt.  When he shifted in his seat, a quick peek told her that that his ankles were shackled to the chair, which was bolted to the floor.

“Hi ‘Gome.”  Inuyasha slurred out.  He wasn’t sure if he was dreaming or not.  The doctor had told him that Kagome would come for a visit, but that seemed like it was a long time ago.  “I wan’ed to see you an’ make sure you were okay.”

“I’m fine ‘Yasha.  Everyone told  me to say hello to you.”  Kagome had been briefed beforehand by Hayato not to mention Sesshoumaru or Shun’s names to Inuyasha.  He felt it would be better if their names weren’t  brought up.

Inuyasha leaned forward and crossed his arms on the table.  “I wan’a apologize for hurting you.  I didn’t mean to…”

Kagome cautiously watched as he suddenly stiffened and his nose flared as he inhaled deeply.

“You still smell like that bastard, Shun.  Sesshoumaru hasn’t killed him yet?  I didn’t think he would let the asshole live after what he did to you.”  His anger was beginning to rise again as he had a lucid moment and remembered that Shun was now Kagome’s second mate.

Kagome stood up and slowly began to back away towards the door as she watched in a near panic.  His aura had abruptly changed and Inuyasha’s youkai markings were beginning to show when he suddenly lunged across the table at her.

“Kikyo, you bitch, when I get my hands on you I’m going to kill you!”  He screamed, snapping his fangs at her.  The doctor was quickly getting out a syringe of sedative and the guards were wrestling Inuyasha to the floor.

Hayato jumped in front of Kagome just as Shun came bursting through the door to grab her around the waist and pull her from the room.

‘I’ve been called many things in my life, but the hurt look in Kagome’s eyes when she called me heartless was upsetting to say the least.’

Sesshoumaru was up and running as soon as he heard Inuyasha raise his voice and Kagome scream, skidding to a halt in front of a sobbing Kagome being held in Shun’s arms.  He narrowed his eyes as he peered through the window at the unconcious hanyou being dragged from the room.

‘No, I am not heartless.  The only thing I can be accused of is that I know my little brother only too well.’
