Chapter 26 - Reassurance

Kagome was pacing the living room floor as she talked with Sango on the phone. "I don't know, Sango, but he said that Sesshoumaru was hiding something, and he didn't know how I would react when I found out what he'd done."

"Well, maybe he was talking about hiding his instincts. We already figured out he was doing that."

"But... But it sounded like more, like he was doing something wrong. Why would I be upset when I found out he'd been trying to act more human? Inuyasha would know I'd just tell him he was being an idiot, and there was no reason for him to do that. This was different. He's doing something. Something bad."

"I really don't think so, Kagome. He loves you. You can see how much you mean to him when he looks at you. It's adorable how his face softens when you walk into the room. He would never do something to risk your relationship. You need to stop thinking about it, or you're going to convince yourself something bad is going on, and your relationship will never be the same. Didn't you say he agreed to play Santa at the orphanage? Why would a guy like him ever do something like that if it wasn't for someone he loves?"

Kagome sighed heavily but nodded to herself. "Yeah, you're right. I mean, he even suggested he purchase the gifts for them. He's definitely not the type to volunteer with children, let alone spend a ton of money on people that aren't... well, me."

Sango laughed. "Uh huh. Miroku and I aren't expecting any gifts from him. I don't think it would even cross his mind to buy anything for anyone but you. See, everything is fine. Nothing to fret about. So, what is your devious, Christmassy idea for the day?"

"I hadn't even thought about it, and he'll be home in an hour!"

"Then you'd better get on it, girl!"

Sesshoumaru entered the house two hours later than he intended when he left that morning. He stressed so much about Kagome possibly overhearing his and Inuyasha's conversation the day before that he had barely been able to work. He had to stay late to finish up what should have only taken a few hours, let alone overtime. Kagome's scent was weak when he stepped into the front hall, and he mentally panicked. Was she gone? Had she left him?

Terrified he lost the only person that had ever meant anything to him, the taiyoukai walked quickly through the house, calming more and more as he spotted things he knew she would never leave behind. Still, he wasn't convinced she was there. She could have simply packed a suitcase and left with plans to return for her other items later. The bedroom was the only way to be sure. If her clothing was still there, so was she.

Sesshoumaru took a deep breath, attempting to calm his racing heart, and grasped the doorknob with a sweaty palm. When he tried to turn it, his hand slipped, and he made a disgusted face before drying his hands on his slacks. On his second attempt, the door opened, and what he saw had his heart racing all over again.

Kagome lay completely naked in the middle of their bed with shiny bows covering her nipples and the curls between her thighs. She looked amazing, except for the small pool of drool on the pillow beside her. For a moment he hesitated, not wanting to wake her if she was tired, but he couldn't help himself. She made herself a present, and he wanted to claim it. The taiyoukai closed the bedroom door hard, the sound startling her awake, and Kagome jumped, sitting up.

"Oh, there you are," she said while glancing at the bedside clock. "Worked late again, I see."

"I am sorry," he purred. "My paperwork took longer than expected, and I was so focused on finishing that I forgot to call. You look delectable, by the way."

Kagome looked down at her body and blushed. How could she have forgotten? "Well, then maybe you should join me."

Sesshoumaru growled and slowly stripped out of his clothing, tossing aside his expensive suit without a care, leaving it crumpled on the floor. He crawled up her body, pressing kisses to her long legs before slowly peeling the bow from just above her curls. He pressed a kiss to the slightly irritated area, cursing himself for causing the adhesive to stay on her skin for so long, before moving higher.

He ran his tongue around her navel and up her stomach to between her breasts, where he used his fangs to nibble gently at her skin. Kagome moaned, and he smirked. It seemed as if the fangs were a go. He moved to her right breast and tried to remove the bow as carefully as possible, wincing when she hissed in pain.

"I don't think I thought this through very well."

"It is my fault for being late," he said in a very apologetic tone.

"It's alright," she said with a smile. "That just means you'll have to kiss it and make it better."

"That, I can do."
