Chapter 10 - The Aquarium

"Wow, I've never been in a place like this when they're closed," Kagome said happily as she explored the aquarium. It was an incredible feeling, like they were alone in the place, or they had snuck in after closing.

"These charity events are often held in creative locations," Sesshoumaru explained. "I do hope the opening speeches weren't too boring for you."

"With a reward like this, they were worth having to sit through," she replied as she stared at the giant window, behind which sharks and stingrays swam. She placed one hand to the glass with a smile, a look of child-like innocence on her face.

"I am glad you're happy," he said with a smirk, thrilled to have pleased her. He didn’t know if she would be interested in attending a charity event because he found them more boring than watching paint dry. "You were lucky to have a dress appropriate for the event."

Kagome smiled. "Inuyasha used to drag me to things like this. I actually have a couple different evening gowns. That boy may hate shopping, but he loves buying me things."

"Does he?" The taiyoukai asked. He didn't like the idea of Inuyasha taking Kagome shopping. It was a very possessive action, and he still felt, at least on some level, that the boy was a risk to his claim on the miko. They hadn't finished their battle, and though they had begun to resolve the issues between them, he knew Inuyasha still considered the woman he wanted as his.

"I think its part of him proving he can take care of me, you know, inu instinct."

"Well, he will no longer need to do so," Sesshoumaru informed her, fully intent on being the one to purchase anything she might need from now on.

"He might not need to, but he'll still want to," she replied. "He already thinks his whole world is falling apart because I'm with you. Let's not take that away from him, too." She knew Inuyasha was having a tough time with the knowledge that she was living with Sesshoumaru. He had been calling her several times a day just to make sure that she was all right, as if he expected to find her in tears, ready for him to come rescue her.

"Hn," the taiyoukai hummed, not happy with the thought of the hanyou taking care of his mate-to-be. They were already partly on the way to being mated because of the ceremony he'd been forced to do to save her life, and it was his job to take care of Kagome, not Inuyasha's.

"Oh, you'll live," she teased, understanding his feelings from that one sound. "I'll let you buy me stuff, too."

"Oh, you will?" he asked in a playful tone.

"Of course," she responded with a grin. "I'm surprised there aren't more people around."

*Vanity and Friendship* (Stella's Soundtrack Challenge)

"Most of them are far more interested in schmoozing and gossip than they are in sea life," he explained. "You could not hear them, could you?"

"No, why?" Kagome asked in confusion.

"So, your hearing has not developed like your eyesight and sense of smell." He was grateful for that fact. She didn't need to hear everything that was being said. Not only was it confusing trying to sort out what was important from the background noise, but also some people weren't very nice.

"Apparently not," the miko agreed. "Why did you ask?"

"Because they are mostly gossiping about you. This Sesshoumaru usually attends these events alone or with some vapid socialite on my arm. They are intensely curious about your identity. They obviously do not recognize you." Some of the women that had accompanied him in the past were there this evening, and they seemed displeased that he was actually paying attention to his date, when with them he seemed detached and disinterested. Others were hypothesizing on her identity, and what she was to him. Some people were so rude as to assume she was an escort, as if he couldn't find a woman to take to an event if he needed to.

"I wouldn't expect them to. It's been a while since Inuyasha made me come to one of these events. It was hard to drag me out at the last minute when I lived four hours away. It gave me time to make excuses."

"How did you come to live so far away?" he asked with interest. He had been curious about it ever since she explained that she and the hanyou had become friends in middle school. "You obviously grew up here since you went to school with Inuyasha."

Kagome sighed softly. "It was kind of stupid, really. I wanted to go off on my own, be independent, and I couldn't do that with Inuyasha around. He was always coddling me, keeping me from really living, you know? So, I started job hunting. That's where I was offered a job, one I came to hate by the way, so, I moved out there. I was there for almost two years. That's where I met Kouga. He lived in the same apartment building as I did. When we moved in together, he noticed right away that I hated my job, so he told me to quit, that he'd take care of me."

"Did you attend college?" he asked, soaking in the new information about her.

"Yup. I have a degree in business and accounting."

"Do you?" he said curiously. "Then perhaps you would like to come work with me." He liked the idea of having her by his side all the time. Sure, she might be a distraction, but he loved her and wanted her to be close all the time. The thought of leaving her to go to work when his vacation was over seemed like torture. He simply didn't want to do it.

"You want me to work then? I thought inu wanted to be the ones doing the working and supporting." She wondered whether he would want her to have a job and contribute to the household, but she expected him to be more like Kouga, whose instincts demanded he support her entirely, or Inuyasha, who often tried to pull the same thing. She had gone to school so she could work and support herself. She didn't need a man to do so for her. Knowing she could take care of herself gave her a kind of freedom even if she didn't need to.

"I simply do not desire for you to be bored. I know that I could not sit in the apartment alone all day with nothing to do. I would go insane."

Kagome laughed. As if she would ever be alone. She didn't doubt Inuyasha would want to spend every moment Sesshoumaru was at work with her. The hanyou was rather possessive and jealous, even though they never dated themselves. He liked to have his time with her, especially now that she was close once more. "But then all the other employees would think that I got my job because I'm sleeping with the boss."

"As if father would not give you a job in an instant." Sesshoumaru was surprised that his father had allowed her to move so far away to work. He knew the old dog considered her a daughter, and it went against instincts for pack to be so spread out. It had probably made him just as insane as it had Inuyasha. She could easily take a job with their company if she so desired.

"He's tried," she told the taiyoukai, "several times in fact, but that would be the same thing. Nepotism. I don't want people to think I don't deserve my position, or that I got it because of who I know."

Sesshoumaru scoffed. "In the business world, everyone knows someone who helped them get where they are. I simply thought it might be nice to work together."

"You don't want to spend all day with me at work and then come home and do the same. You'll get tired of me." Kagome was serious. She loved the taiyoukai too much to risk pushing him away by smothering him. She would love to spend every minute of the day with him, both waking and sleeping, but could their relationship survive it? She was especially concerned considering that they were still getting to know one another.

"I will never get tired of you," he replied, sliding his hand from the curve of her waist lower to the slit in her dress, which revealed a great deal of her creamy, toned thigh.

She gently swatted his hand away with a laugh. "Behave yourself."

"But why? There is no one around to see."

"Because we promised," she reminded him. "Look at the jellyfish," she said in an attempt to distract the amorous taiyoukai from her body. The tank stood in the center of the floor, and the lighting changed colors every few seconds, lighting up the strange sea creatures. "I think they're amazing."

"You like jellyfish?" he asked in confusion.

"They're so weird! I mean their entire bodies are see-through. How cool is that? And look, they have tiny ones, too!"

"I wish your dress was see-through," he purred in her ear.

"Really?" she inquired playfully. "You want everyone to see me naked?"

"All right, I wish your dress was off, right now."

"Someone might see!" she hissed as his hand went exploring again.

"I would sense them before they came within 10 yards of us. No one would see anything."

"Gods, it's so hard to say no to you," she moaned as he cupped her core through her thin silk panties.

"But less than two days?" Kagome was torn. She wanted to stick to their arrangement and not have sex for a while, but she wanted him so badly! Just as another couple rounded the corner and came into sight, Sesshoumaru turned to face the tank of tiny jellyfish, effectively hiding the fact that he was incredibly aroused. Kagome joined him, trying not to laugh. She couldn't believe what they had just done in a place where they could get caught. Her legs were shaking from her orgasms, and she clung to the taiyoukai's arm for support.

They waited, making small talk about the jellyfish they were looking at, discussing the information on the plate the wall held, while waiting for the other couple to continue past. They took their good sweet time inspecting the creatures through the various windows until they finally walked out of sight.

Sesshoumaru mentally groaned while wondering if they had been there long enough to duck out. Dinner hadn't even been served yet, though, and if he disappeared he would hear about it from his father. They had made a sizable donation to the charity, and he was supposed to say a few words. No, they couldn't leave yet. He was just going to have to find a way to calm down and deal with it, because he doubted Kagome would give it another shot.

Sure, risking being caught in such a compromising position had been thrilling, but there was no way he could talk her into doing it again, not tonight. Perhaps when they made it home.
