Kagome bounced her knee as she sat on the edge of the tub, biting her thumbnail.  She knew it was a terrible habit, and one that Sesshomaru had tried to break her of many times, but she couldn’t get through moments like these without her old vices in place.

Sesshomaru was out at the store, buying some things for dinner.  He’d been incredible throughout the past year.  He supported her emotionally, mentally, and physically.  There were countless times that he’d simply held her in bed as she cried, mourning each loss.  He mourned with her, in his silent way.  But mostly, he was there for her, petting her hair and holding her tight.

Kagome knew he would go to the ends of the earth for her, that he would fight Death himself for her to get each of their children back.  That was the truth of it, she thought with a sad smile.  For all his posturing and denial, Sesshomaru held the idea of family as sacred as she did.

There was purity in that truth, a comfort to her.

So as she stared at the test on the counter, white and small and innocent, she kept that in her mind; that no matter what, Sesshomaru would stay by her side.  She’d been with him all these years, all these centuries.  She’d mated him, she’d married him, and someday, hopefully soon, she would have a family with him.

Their relationship was a bit controversial when it first began, back when Sesshomaru and Inuyasha were still pretty much enemies.  The hanyou had screamed at him, at her.  He’d felt betrayed.  But months went by, and after they all fought Naraku together, Inuyasha came around and accepted their relationship.

Her mother was a completely different story.  She had shamelessly thrown herself at Sesshomaru the second Kagome brought him home to meet her.  Remembering the panicked look on the demon lord’s face as he looked to Kagome for help always brought a smile to her face.

Even now.

Just as she picked up the test, Kagome heard their front door opening, and her heart was pounding as she stared at it, too hopeful to even focus on anything else.

“Kagome?” his voice called from the foyer.  “Where are you, love?”

“Back here,” she managed to answer, her eyes glued to the test.

His footsteps got closer, in time with her heart.  The results would come in less than a minute.

She heard him enter their bedroom, his footsteps softening on the carpet.  He rounded the corner to the doorway of the bathroom, and Kagome looked up from the pregnancy test as Sesshomaru filled the doorframe.

His golden eyes drifted from her face to the stick in her hands, then back up again.  He gave a soft smile, “Are you…?”

Kagome matched his expression, giving a soft shrug, “Needs a few more seconds to tell me.”

When they looked down, Kagome grinned happily, “This is the one.”

“It is, beloved.  I feel it.”
