Vivid sunlight poured in from the horizon, soft colors playing over the waking land as the clouds were set aflame. Splotchy petals of a deep, rich red bloomed across a crisp field of glistening white and trickled down from the boughs of an ancient tree. Snow crunched beneath delicate mortal feet as a woman garbed in traditional red and white followed the trail with a cautious sense of urgency. White puffed into the ice-laden early morning air with her every breath, cheeks and lips rosy from the cold. She came to an abrupt halt before the the magnificent white-riddled tree, a much more magnificent and majestic creature staring down at her with red-flecked pools of molten gold. Clothed in white as pure as the snow and red as rich as the blood blooming and staining the white silk, he sat silently...waiting. Watching. She dared not utter a word, emotion turning azure eyes into stormy pools of tumulous ocean waves. There was a change in him- just a flicker, and it was gone. He was before her before she could blink, lips met as salt water dripped from her eyes. Her lips were painted red with his life-blood as he wiped her tears away...and then was gone. As though he had never truly been there at all. She fell to her knees with a sob, the taste of copper on her lips.

Sesshoumaru...have you someone to protect?

The great and terrible young Daiyoukai leaned back against a tree, maroon-embellished eyelids fully shut to the world as he focused his every sense on the sobbing miko.

...I do. But there is work to be done before she can become mine.

Golden eyes snapped open, pupils slitted as his lungs filled with the crisp air.

Soon... Soon. I promise.

With an inhuman bound, Sesshoumaru began his journey to the next hindrance. Just as sure as he knew he would pave the way for their joining, he knew she would wait for him. Always. Unwaveringly. And Kagome would have his dedication and loyalty...until the very end of their days...
