葬儀Sōgi

The atmosphere was somber and the quaint chamber filled with gloom. People littered about the small space adorned in black. As the room began to empty and one by one, a frail looking woman with evidence of her sorrow worn clearly on her face was greeted with smiles of pity.

“He was a good man, I’m sorry for your loss.” Was the constant mantra that was repeated over and over… and over as she greeted her guests.

She smiled a smile that did not reach her eyes as she tried with all her might to maintain her composure. Oh how she wished this day would end.

She noticed, in the far corner of the room where her husband’s memorial shrine was located, an unmistakable man of incredible stature. She approached him gracefully and began to speak, “Thank you for paying your respects Sesshoumaru… I- I know it must be difficult losing your brother so soon after Kagura’s passing.”

The silent man did not acknowledge the petite woman behind him. Upon his silence she continued. “I- I don’t know what I’m going to do now that he’s gone.” She paused as she embraced herself. “He’s all I knew… I loved him so much and he just… left me here to wallow in misery all alone.” Tears began to well in her eyes and her speech became stuttered. “I- I- I- just… You must know what this feels like?”

Her query was met with his shift in position. He peered down at her pitiful frame with emotionless eyes. Sensing his movement Kagome looked up at the intimidating man and met his eyes. Eyes that looked so much like her beloveds… eyes that brought forth the many memories of her deceased husband. Before she could help herself she found lips pressed against his own.

Her kiss was filled with pain and the longer her lips lingered she poured her sorrow and misery deeper into him.

Sesshoumaru did not respond, nor did he push her away. He could feel her need for comfort, comfort that he too was in need of. Slowly he brought her closer into his embrace as he allowed her to pour her misery into him.

He found himself doing the same. He had not allowed himself to grieve properly… and perhaps they could grieve together. He allowed himself to find solace in the arms of his brother’s wife. She knew all too well the agony associated with having a part of you wrenched painfully from your chest. The emptiness that followed the burial of one who was held so dear. So he allowed himself to grieve and he wept into her kiss.
