If Wishes Were Dogs by dixiepixie

I Wish I Lived in a Castle.

“Whistle while you’re workin’,

Even if you’re hurtin…

Don’t nobody know, and don’t nobody care,

So baby let it go!”

The song was stuck in her head, her own lyrics made up to match her mood. Black comedy, with a hint of blithe modernism… perhaps a touch of narcissism. If words had a taste, she imagined that this would taste like one of those awful green apples that everyone liked to cook with, but didn’t dare taste raw.

She felt raw, but she wasn’t ready to deal with that now. A raw deal eventually worked itself out and in the meantime, she was under no obligation to do anything.

“Kagome-sama?”

The overly formal, mild and questioning voice startled Kagome so badly she fell from her perch.

If she had been sitting on a step or a rock, or even in a tree branch, it might have been nothing. But fate was never this kind to Kagome-sama, oh no.

“KYAAA!”

Arms flailing and eyes bugging she felt herself pitching backwards, hating the fact that of all the times the kid could have snuck up on her it was now. Now she was busy: the rainy season was coming and she had just wanted to add some extra pitch to the leaky spots in her sad little roof. She had worked hard to build herself this little cabin, and it leaked.

As her ass collided with the rocky ground – what a bastard it had been to even break the earth here – Kagome’s startled yelp turned into a pained cry.

“NG…”

For a split second Kagome collected herself. There was so much going on, if she didn’t she was liable to scream at someone and take a head off. Her ass bone was broken, she could just feel it. The culprit was a young woman who hadn’t known any better, and really couldn’t be blamed. It had been such a delightful, demure, and polite way to address her, as well. Kagome was no sama!

“Oh, Kagome-sama! I am so sorry! Are you alright?!”

Rin had lost all the shades of her training to be that girl, the epitome of a beautiful girl in this era, available to suitors who dreamt of her but dared not actually ask after her… and somehow landed the luck of working on the castle where the girl resided. What a get up, Kagome though as she fought the tears of pain, pain which was now shooting up her backside as though she’d sat on a pitchfork.

She would have liked to have been told that she could live there, in that castle… with its non leaky roof…

“Rin…”

“Oh, oh Kagome Rin will bring help!”

And the flurry of tiny feet was all Kagome heard before she could even sit up and gasp for breath again.

“Damnit. I’m fine…”

All she had wanted was to fix her roof! Why couldn’t anything go her way? Grunting and pushing herself to try and stand, she cursed her luck these days.

I’m trying to just play around and keep things 500 words or less, see what I come up with. Not sure where I am going with any of it, to be totally honest. Feel free to comment, critique, or whatever floats your little rowboats. Thank you!
