Chapter Three-

Black Dress and Cake

Kagome sat across from Sesshomaru in a small café of her choosing. She chose it because it was a special place to her, one she had always gone to as a child with her father, and continued to get her coffee from to this day. They also had fabulous cakes, one of which she was picking at right now.

The morning had been quite chaotic. First, she finds out she and her business partner got hitched. Then he laid another load on her. One she did not quite expect.

“Its fine, we’ll just call up our lawyers and get them started on a divorce. It’ll be simple.”

“Kagome, you need to sit down,” Sesshomaru requested, in a tamer tone than what he usually used. He wasn’t used to being quite so gentle. But he was about to destroy Kagome’s world, and he had a hefty deal of respect for her. Kagome took his advice and sat back down on the bed.

“Kagome, have you heard of the legends of youkai and mikos and priests?”

“I have. I grew up on a shrine. My grandfather always said they were around and I should learn to become a shrine maiden. I always believed him to be an old cook.”

“Your grandfather was right. I’m one of those youkai of legends.”

“Yeah, right. Nice joke.”

“I do not kid, Kagome,” Sesshomaru said as he dropped the concealment charm, allowing his demonic heritage to show through. “I’m a few thousand years old, and I’m known as an inu youkai. Last night, we did more than get married, we bonded in demonic terms too.”

“What do you mean,” Kagome asked, starting to panic.

“We are mated, in youkai terms, married. However, for my breed, we mate for life, and once we mate, that’s it. There is no way out of it. So, even if we were to divorce in the human way, in youkai we would be seen as mates, till the end of time. If you were to try to marry again in human terms, you would be unable to consummate the marriage. The bond will not allow you to lie with someone other than the person you have mated with.”

“What are you saying, Sesshomaru,” Kagome asked, feeling herself coming close to hyperventilation. She found herself glad she sat down.

“We’re going to be together for a long time, Kagome. When we mated, I extended your life force to match mine.” Sesshomaru finished. Seeing Kagome in a state of panic he drew her too him and started a low growl to help her calm down. And stayed silent to allow her to take in and process all he just told her.

After Kagome had calmed down, she pulled away and had gone to the spare room she’d used from time to time when working on long projects that required her and Sesshomaru to collaborate, in which she kept some clothes for when the unexpected stay over happened. She had pulled on a black knit dress with a cowl neck and a pair of black leggings, as Sesshomaru had told her to be comfortable; they were going to head to his ancestral home to meet his parents.

“Kagome,” she heard Sesshomaru say, breaking her out of her thoughts. She looked up into the eyes, that she now knew, where molten gold. “Are you ready to go?”

She looked down at her half eaten cake and nodded. Taking her plate up to the counter, the cashier wished her a ‘Merry Christmas’ that she absent-mindedly responded too.

“Hey, Sesshomaru?”

“Hn.”

“What does it mean that we’re mated and married? Or, I mean, what’s going to become of us and be expected of us now?”

“My family will expect an heir. Eventually. However, I will hold them off. While this may have been sudden and unexpected, I find myself glad,” Sesshomaru said, wrapping an arm around Kagome’s waist as he pulled her close to him, as they walked to where he parked the car.

“What?” Kagome asked, shocked by his words and actions.

“I could have landed up in this situation with anyone, but I’m glad it was you. I know you’re intelligent, you’ve a radiant beauty, and you’re not going to be after my money or any titles I may hold. You’re kind and caring.”

Kagome blushed, and cuddled closer into his body as a burst of cold wind tore through her. Maybe this wasn’t the worst time of the year, as she had thought for many years, gazing up at Sesshomaru’s face as he opened the passenger car door to allow her to slide in. And he was right. This could have happened with a much worse person. She was glad it was him. As he moved around the car, she saw a Christmas tree all lit up, and for the first time in a long time, it didn’t make her grouchy and grumpy, it brought a smile to her face.

A/N: Kagome's slowly changing her mind about this time of year. Next chapter or the chapter after will be reflective on Sesshomaru's point of view and his view of the this time of year. And I will highlight why both of them haven't liked it as they open up to each other and come closer.
