Sesshomaru heard a knocking on his door. He finished the math problem he was working on and placed the pen on the table before he got up to answer it. Just as he entered the living room the door and a soaking wet Miko entered the room carrying several bags. She put the bags down in the entrance way.

“It’s pouring out there!” She said and flipped her hood back. Though she had the protection of her jacket, her midnight hair was speckled with shiny droplets of rain. Sesshomaru watched her run her hand through the drops and wondered why she looked so beautiful. A whimper interrupted his thoughts.

“Kagome.” He said in a warning voice. Kagome smiled at him sheepishly and opened her jacket, letting a little black and white puppy out into her hands. “Absolutely not.” His tone hinted at steel resolve.

“But she was all alone in a box on the side of the road that was half filled with water. There was a sign that said ‘free puppies’ so she has nowhere else to go!” She looked at him with big eyes, exactly like the ones that the puppy looked up at him with. Sesshomaru growled.

“And why do I have to take her?” He asked with a scowl. It was true that he adored Kagome but they were only dating for the moment. She lived in an apartment near the college they both went to.

“Because my apartment doesn’t allow animals! And it will only be for a few weeks, a month tops. I’m moving to that new complex that was just built as soon as the paperwork goes through… but until then I need someone to watch Dolly.” Kagome continued to look at him with large eyes and Sesshomaru couldn’t stay mad with her. He sighed.

“Dolly? Are you even sure it is a girl?” He looked at the scruffy Dalmatian puppy and silently figured out how likely it would be to give it a bath without ruining anything. The probability was near zero.

“Yeah… about that… I don’t think she has her shots yet. I made an appointment to take her in tomorrow but my boss called me on my way here to tell me I had to work then. I know you don’t have any classes tomorrow so could you take Dolly in?” Kagome put the wet dog on the floor and moved to Sesshomaru. “Please?” She asked and put her arms around his neck. Sesshomaru’s arms went instantly around her waist.

“Fine.” He said than leaned in for a kiss. Just before he could press his lips to hers there was a squeaky bark to his right. Kagome turned towards the sound and Sesshomaru was left without a kiss.

“Dolly, don’t eat that!”She moved from his arms and ran to the puppy that was single mindedly gnawing on Sesshomaru’s slippers, a gift from his father. Kagome picked the puppy up and turned towards Sesshomaru. “I guess she needs a little training… but like I said, it will only be for a little while.”

                Sesshomaru growled.

                “Fine.”

Sesshomaru closed his textbook and let out a yawn. It was too late at night to worry about being dignified and with no one around he had nothing to worry about. He got up from his seat and left his study, heading towards his bed room. Though he was a student, his father was wealthy enough to have several homes and Sesshomaru was permitted to use this one while he was in college. Kagome called it a mansion but in his opinion it was one of his father’s smaller houses having only three bedrooms.

Sesshomaru paused and decided to check in on the puppy, not to make sure that the little black and white dog was alright, of course not, just to make sure that she was not making a mess of the kitchen where she had been closed into. Sesshomaru opened the door and stepped in.

In one corner was a shiny new bowl and food that Kagome had brought with her, along with one that was filled with water. There was a small dog bed that he had put under his counter, but no dog in sight. With a frown, Sesshomaru walked further into the room, searching all of the logical places that the dog could be hiding in. A squeaky bark had him looking down to see that the puppy was directly behind his feet.

“Sneaky.” Sesshomaru said, not without some respect for the small beast. He focused on the room again to make sure that nothing was broken then turned back to the door. Without him realizing it, the dog slipped out just before the door closed.

Sesshomaru walked down the hallway to his bedroom. After changing from his clothing into cotton pajama pants, he turned off the lights and lay down in bed. Just after he fell into sleep, a little black and white puppy crawled up the bed and came to lie down next to him. Cuddling up to Sesshomaru, the puppy closed her eyes and joined him in sleep.
