The Ceremony by Riku Ryuu

Mating with a Twist

This is for SilverontheRose's Mating with Mokomoko Challenge. This is mostly some of my random mind... but oh well.

Enjoy

Kagome stood by the side of the stage and stared at the crowd around it. She had no idea why so many people would come to see the mating ceremony between her and Sesshomaru but it was unnerving to think that their eyes would be on her throughout the whole ordeal.

Kagome glared at Sesshomaru, who stood on the stage and was talking about common things such as construction in the village, new laws, and mostly political stuff. Kagome knew that as the future Lady of the West she should be focusing on this information and committing it to memory, but she was too nervous to pay attention. Sesshomaru had been very vague when she had asked him what would happen during the mating ceremony so she had no idea what to expect.

“-Kagome.” Sesshomaru said and faced Kagome with a hand outstretched. Kagome felt the eyes turn to her like a giant anvil falling on her. She hesitantly walked up the few stairs to the stage and took Sesshomaru’s hand. Sesshomaru pulled her close and she felt a tickling at her neck.

“With this, the fur of my father, I bide myself to this woman for all eternity.” Kagome turned her head and saw that the fur that was always on Sesshomaru’s shoulder was slowly dropping to the ground.  She watched it crawl around her feet and had a second to wonder why Sesshomaru had no shoes on before the fur started to climb up her leg. A very unladylike shriek left her mouth and some of the people at her back laughed.

The fur inched up her body and she would have pulled it off and thrown it away from herself if Sesshomaru was not holding her. The fur went along her right arm she shivered as the soft hair rubbed against her. The fur went along the back of her neck then around until it was a soft necklace. After a few minutes of silence, the fur started to move again, crawling from her to Sesshomaru. It returned to its place over his shoulder and Sesshomaru released her.

Kagome backed up a step and stared at the fur, the seemingly dead fur.

“What is that things?” She asked finally. Sesshomaru gave her a small grin.

“We will talk when we return home.” He whispered to her. He turned back to the audience and spoke louder. “The mating ceremony is now complete. Bow before the Lady of the West, Kagome.”

The people did as he said then slowly dispersed to do whatever it was that they usually did. Sesshomaru put a hand on Kagome’s back and guided her off of the stage.

Kagome waited until they were alone in their room before rounding on Sesshomaru with a dark scowl.

“Explain. NOW!” She glared at him. Sesshomaru did not look very afraid, but he rarely showed much expression.

“What would you have me explain?” He asked. He moved to a chair that leaned against the wall and began to remove his shoes.

“What in the world is that?!” She pointed at the fur. Sesshomaru placed his shoes near the door and stood up.

“This is Mokomoko-sama.” He moved to a desk nearby and sat down. He picked up a parchment and started to read, infuriating Kagome all the more.

“And Mokomoko-sama would be what?” She moved to the desk and placed her hands on it, glaring at her mate.

“When my father had me, he cut off some of his hair and had it woven into this.” He said, gesturing to the fur. Kagome turned her glare to it. “It is a tradition in my family.”

                “Then how did it move?”

Sesshomaru reluctantly put the paper down to face Kagome.

“It has is aura in it, so it has some… powers.” He shook his head. “Not much though.”

“And why did it wrap around my neck? Come to think of it, why haven’t you told me about all of this before?!” Kagome’s eyes were practically spitting flame now. Sesshomaru sighed and got up from his chair. He went around the desk and pulled Kagome into a hug. Kagome resisted his hold for only a moment before relaxing against him.

“I could not tell you, it is against tradition… And the reason Mokomoko wrapped around you is to tell if you were truly my destined mate. If you were not it would have tightened until you died.” Kagome jerked against him and Sesshomaru tightened his hold. “I would never have allowed it to go so far. If Mokomoko had tried to kill you it would be in pieces at your feet. I do not need it to tell me that you are my heart.”

Kagome relaxed again. Though it was scary to think that the innocent looking fur could possible kill someone, the reassurance from Sesshomaru was enough for her.

“So that’s the reason…” She mumbled. Sesshomaru frowned down at her.

                “Reason for what?”

“The reason you are constantly petting the fur. At first I thought it was your fur so it seemed a little weird, but now that I know it is your father’s fur it makes more sense. It reminds you of him, right?”

Sesshomaru said nothing but inclined is head. Kagome pulled away from him and gave him a teasing smile.

“Ready to go to bed… mate?”
