Chapter 2.

Sesshomaru woke with a sharp inhale, his body tensing before his mind caught up. For a split second, he forgot where he was. The couch beneath him was too soft, too warm compared to the hard floor he was used to. The faint scent of jasmine and wild musk filled the air, comforting yet unfamiliar.

Then it hit him.

Kagome.

His golden eyes darted around the room. The apartment was quiet, the only sound being the hum of the refrigerator. His gaze landed on the clock 6:00 AM.

Then he saw them.

His clothes clean and neatly folded sat on the table. His heart sank. She had been to his apartment. She had seen everything.

Shame burned through him like wildfire.

His fists clenched at his sides. What must she think of me now?

Slowly, he approached the table, his fingers brushing against the familiar fabric. A small note lay beside them.

You can shower if you want. Bathroom’s free.

No judgment. No pity. Just a simple statement.

Sesshomaru exhaled, his shoulders sagging in relief. Grabbing his clothes, he moved toward the bathroom.

Warm water cascaded over him, washing away the dried blood, dirt, and the filth of last night’s encounter. He ran his fingers through his long silver hair, trying to untangle the knots.

But no amount of scrubbing could wash away the shame lingering inside him.

Kagome saved me.

He had known she was law enforcement, but after seeing her jacket, he realized just how elite she was SAT. Special Assault Team. Only the best females made the cut.

Of course, she made the team.

He thought back to how she had handled those wolf females, how effortlessly she had taken them down. She wasn’t just strong, she was incredible.

His claws scraped against the tiles as he braced himself against the wall. His chest tightened at the thought of her, her sharp blue eyes, the way she carried herself with absolute confidence, the way her voice made his canine instincts scream at him to submit.

Sesshomaru sighed and turned off the water.

As he toweled off and dressed, his mind raced. Now that Kagome knew where he lived, what little he had, surely, she would want him gone the moment she woke up.

He wouldn’t blame her.

His stomach twisted at the thought. She had been so kind to him, and yet he had nothing to offer in return.

Then, as he walked out, his gaze landed on the fridge.

He frowned. Barely anything inside, just a few random items, but not enough for a real meal.

Sesshomaru stood there for a moment before making a decision.

Pulling on his shoes, he grabbed his wallet and quietly slipped out of the apartment.

His funds were low, dangerously low, but it didn’t matter. He could at least do this.

A short trip to the convenience store later, he returned with eggs, spam, cheese, and juice, simple but filling. He placed the bags on the counter, rolling up his sleeves.

Sesshomaru wasn’t a fighter. But he could cook.

And if this was the only way he could thank Kagome, then he would make sure it was the best damn breakfast he could manage.

Kagome woke to the rich aroma of food drifting through her apartment. She inhaled deeply, her fangs peeking out as she licked her lips.

"Gods, that smells good."

Stretching, she reached for her phone, her sleep-heavy eyes adjusting to the screen's brightness. A new message from Sango sat at the top of her notifications.

Sango. "Got your request. His background is clean. Here’s the link."

Kagome clicked it, scanning the details quickly. No criminal record. No debts.

But something wasn’t adding up.

Why wasn’t he in college? Why wasn’t he mated off to some rich female? A male like Sesshomaru, beautiful, well-mannered, and clearly intelligent, should have been snatched up by some wealthy heiress by now.

She exhaled through her nose. Guess I’ll just have to ask him myself.

Tossing her phone aside, she rolled out of bed and pulled on a pair of tight leggings that hugged every curve of her toned legs, pairing them with a fitted black shirt. She swept her hair into a ponytail, giving herself a quick once-over in the mirror.

Satisfied, she stepped out, silent as a predator on the hunt.

She approached the kitchen, her sharp eyes locking onto Sesshomaru’s back. He was completely unaware of her presence, his focus entirely on the meal he had prepared.

The kitchen was spotless.

Her brows lifted slightly. He had cleaned everything.

On the counter, a neatly folded note caught her attention.

"Thank you for everything."

Kagome’s sharp gaze flickered back to him.

So, he was planning to leave while I was still asleep.

Not happening.

She cleared her throat.

Sesshomaru jumped, nearly dropping the plate he was about to put in the microwave. He spun around, his golden eyes wide, cheeks flushed, his mouth opening and closing as he tried to form words.

"I-I—Kagome, I—"

She smirked and cut him off with a single finger pressed against his lips. His breath hitched, his entire body going still.

"You're not going anywhere."

Her voice was firm, brooking no argument. Sesshomaru swallowed hard, his eyes downcast slightly in submission.

"N-Not trying to—"

Kagome arched a brow, arms crossing over her chest. "No?"

His gaze darted to the note on the counter.

She gave him a knowing smirk. "So, you weren’t trying to sneak out while I was still asleep?"

Sesshomaru’s ears burned red. "...I just didn’t want to be a burden."

Kagome’s expression softened, just a little.

"Sit."

Sesshomaru hesitated. Kagome’s blue eyes flashed.

He obeyed immediately.

She leaned against the counter, arms still crossed, watching him carefully.

"Now, Sesshomaru... Why is a male like you living in a dump like that?"

His fingers tightened around the edge of the table.

She tilted her head. "You should be in college. Or mated off to some rich female who’d pay a fortune for you."

Sesshomaru flinched, his golden eyes darting away.

Silence stretched between them.

Kagome sighed, pushing off the counter. "Well?"

Sesshomaru shifted in his seat, his fingers nervously tracing the edge of the table.

"My name is Sesshomaru Taisho. I was homeschooled, and I come from a well known family of doctors. But... I was disowned."

Kagome’s sharp blue eyes narrowed. "Disowned?"

Sesshomaru exhaled shakily, avoiding her gaze. "I wanted to take the exams and go to college, but my mother had other plans. She wanted me to marry a well-respected doctor from a prestigious family. The Asano family offered a lot for me. I've met Sara before as my mother brought her around alot, she is not a good person so I refused."

Kagome leaned forward, intrigued. "And your mother didn't take that well, did she?"

Sesshomaru let out a bitter chuckle. "No. She was embarrassed, furious. She told me I was ungrateful and bringing shame to the family. She kicked me out and said the only way I could return was if I got on my knees and begged the Asano family for forgiveness and promise to be a proper mate for Dr. Sara Asano"

Kagome's brows shot up. That explains why he speaks and carries himself like someone from high society... but to be kicked out over this? That’s extreme even for a wealthy family.

"Do you have any documents proving your education?" she asked.

Sesshomaru shook his head. "No. My mother destroyed everything. She said a few nights on the street would 'set me straight.' My father... he managed to slip me a little money before she threw me out, but it didn't last long."

Kagome clenched her jaw, anger flickering in her eyes. His own mother did that to him?

Sesshomaru lowered his head. "I'm sorry. I was going to tell you over our date, so you’d know the truth and wouldn’t waste your time on me."

He stood to leave, but Kagome’s hand shot out, her fingers wrapping around his wrist in a firm but gentle grip.

"Sit down, Sesshomaru."

Her voice was calm, but the authority in it left no room for argument.

Sesshomaru hesitated before slowly lowering himself back into his seat.

Kagome exhaled, rubbing her temples. "First of all, there is nothing to be ashamed of." She dropped her hand and met his golden gaze. "Second, you’re not going back to that apartment."

Sesshomaru’s eyes widened. "Kagome, I—"

She held up a hand. "No offense, but that place is a death trap. It’s only a matter of time before someone breaks in while you’re sleeping."

Sesshomaru opened his mouth to protest, but before he could get a word out, Kagome smirked and shoved a slice of spam into his mouth.

"Don’t argue, Sesshomaru."

She purred, her deep, velvety tone sending a shiver down his spine. His entire face turned red as he quickly chewed and swallowed, avoiding her intense gaze.

Kagome leaned back in her chair, crossing her legs. "Do you have work today?"

Sesshomaru swallowed again, still flustered. "Y-Yes. I’m closing tonight."

Kagome nodded. "Alright. I’ll be there earlier this time. And since I’m off today and tomorrow, we’re going on that date."

Sesshomaru nearly choked on his food. "D-Date?"

Kagome grinned, licking her fangs as her eyes roamed over him. "Mmmhmm. I told you I wasn’t giving up on you, pretty boy."

Sesshomaru’s ears burned as he fidgeted in his seat, unsure of what to say.

Kagome stood up, stretching her toned arms before ruffling his silky silver hair. He shivered at her touch, which only made her purr louder.

"First things first—let’s get the rest of your clothes from that apartment and turn in your keys. You're not going back there after today."

Sesshomaru hesitated, then nodded. "Kagome... thank you for everything. I promise I won’t be a burden."

Kagome rolled her eyes playfully before cupping his chin, forcing him to meet her gaze.

"You’re not a burden. Got it?"

Sesshomaru's breath hitched at how close she was. "Y-Yeah... got it."

Kagome smirked before grabbing her keys. "Let’s go."

Sesshomaru hesitated as they climbed the stairs to his apartment, an uneasy feeling settling in his gut. The hallway was quiet, too quiet. Then he saw it.

His door was slightly open.

His body went rigid. Whispers drifted out from inside.

Kagome followed his gaze and instantly tensed. She pulled out her phone, and hit record. "Stay here."

Sesshomaru nodded, swallowing hard.

Kagome stepped inside, silent as a shadow.

"He smells so good," a sultry voice purred.

Kagome’s sharp ears picked up the sound of fabric rustling.

"Mmm, yeah," another voice chuckled. "Tonight, we’re coming back, and I don’t care if he wants to or not—I’m fucking that pretty male."

A growl of agreement. "With the landlady on our side, this is too easy. She gave us his spare key. Poor dog doesn’t even know he’s about to become a whore."

A cruel laugh. "We’ll make a fortune whoring him out."

"Thanks for saying all that on video."

Kagome’s voice was ice.

The two cat demonesses froze as a suffocating demonic aura filled the air. Slowly, they turned to see a panther demoness blocking the exit, eyes burning with fury.

Kagome calmly put away her phone. Then she cracked her knuckles.

"Hope you enjoyed your last mistake."

Sesshomaru flinched as the sound of bodies slamming against walls filled the air. Pained shrieks. Snapping bones. Desperate cries. Then silence.

A body crashed through the doorway. A cat demoness, her face a bloody mess, teeth missing, barely conscious. Another quickly followed, cradling her broken ribs.

They scrambled to their feet, eyes wild with terror, and fled down the hall.

Sesshomaru hesitated, then cautiously stepped inside.

The scent of blood hung heavy in the air. Kagome stood in the center of the room, her crimson-stained knuckles trembling. Her eyes glowed a violent shade of red, her aura still crackling with rage.

Sesshomaru didn’t think. He dropped to his knees before her, baring his neck in submission. A soft whimper escaped his lips.

The effect was immediate.

Kagome’s aura slowly settled, her breathing evening out. He could still feel the tension in her muscles, but the sight of him kneeling, offering himself in instinctual deference calmed her.

Sesshomaru gently took her hand and led her to the sink. Without a word, he turned on the water, rinsing the blood from her hands. He dried them with slow, careful movements, then knelt again before her, baring his neck once more.

Kagome exhaled, finally snapping out of it. Her fingers threaded through his silver hair, grounding herself in his presence.

"Gather your things. You're leaving with me."

Sesshomaru quickly packed what little he had some clothes, deodorant, a toothbrush. He barely had any belongings.

As they stepped outside, Kagome turned to him. "Wait in the car. I need to handle something first."

Sesshomaru hesitated. "Kagome—"

"Stay."

Something in her tone left no room for argument. He nodded.

Kagome turned and strode toward the property manager’s office.

The office reeked of cigarettes and stale alcohol.

A woman with pale skin and dark hair stepped out, a lazy smirk on her lips. The scent of wind magic clung to her.

Kagome glanced at the name tag. Kagura.

"Looking for a place?" Kagura asked, voice dripping with false cheer.

Kagome smiled back, just as fake.

Then she pulled out her police badge.

And then her phone.

She hit play.

Kagura’s smirk vanished.

As the recording of the cat demonesses played, Kagura’s face went ghostly white. The moment her own name came up, her role in handing over Sesshomaru’s spare key, she trembled.

"W-What do you want?" Her voice cracked.

Kagome’s smile widened.

Then she lunged.

Her hand tangled in Kagura’s hair, slamming her face against the desk with a sickening crack.

"Sesshomaru no longer lives here," Kagome growled, her fangs bared. "He owes you nothing. Do you understand?"

Kagura whimpered. "Y-Yes! Please, don’t turn me in! Don’t kill me!"

Kagome yanked her up by her hair and threw her against the wall.

"If I ever see you near him again," she whispered, voice low and dangerous, "you’ll wish I had turned you in."

Kagura clutched her face, too afraid to move as Kagome turned and walked out.

Sesshomaru sat in the passenger seat, waiting anxiously.

When Kagome returned, she didn’t say a word. She just opened the door, slid into the driver’s seat, and let out a slow breath.

Sesshomaru looked at her hands. No new blood.

"Is it… taken care of?" he asked softly.

Kagome’s lips curved into a smirk. "Yeah. No one will bother you again."

Sesshomaru swallowed, looking down. "Kagome… thank you."

She reached over and took his hand, squeezing it gently.

"Let’s go home."
