You Can't Run Away From Love by Animeclo

Broken

Broken

"The greatest love is the kind that awakens the soul, that makes us reach for more, plants a fire in our hearts and brings peace to our minds. My sweet Kagome... that's what I hope to give you forever."

At that point in time, nothing could rival the happiness that overwhelmed her. The sensation of her heavy heart, so swollen with love, eyes shining with unshed tears, pink cheeks burning as she refused to stop smiling. On this day, her love had become her life. Sesshomaru. Such adoring words fell from his lips as he whispered sweet nothings to her, and only her. She knew with certainty that he was hers forever.

His hands clasped over her own. A light tug on her wrist forced her forward; her eyes closed in anticipation for his kiss. Yet it never came. Slowly opening her eyes, she was met with his intense gaze.

“Is everything ok?” She whispered.

“You.” The soft utterance, paired with the withdrawal of his warm hands, made her tremble. His bleak expression nearly crippled her. “I don’t love you anymore.” He pivoted, Kagome staring as he moved away from her and into the arms of another woman.

“This is my love, my future...” His hand rested on the other woman's slightly bulging stomach. “The mother of my child.” Frozen still in horror, her hands flew up to cover her mouth. Bile rose in her stomach, the bitter acid burned her throat. Shocked eyes overflowed with tears as Kagome stared at the new “couple”, their own future burning a path past her now crumbled and bleak one.

“He doesn’t want you now darling, he wants me... us.” A cold, slender hand gripped her shoulder, the same woman now leant close to her side, red eyes glaring. Sharp nails drew thin, pink lines down the skin of her arm, Kagome’s eyes followed the hand as it abandoned its torture to rest against the woman’s protruding stomach. Pained screams ripped from her throat, she couldn’t stop as agony consumed her.

“Kagome!” A harsh voice called out. Cold, clammy hands gripped her shoulders and shook her lightly. Her eyes opened, morning light blinded her and birthed new pain; allowing unshed tears to fall past her temples and disappear into her hairline. Her limbs ached, each muscle burned with fever as she sat upright, leaning against the wall behind her back.

She shivered, just a dream, it’s just a dream, the mantra buzzed in her mind.“I’m sorry.” Barely a whisper tumbled from her lips as she turned to the familiar figure in front of her. Wiping under her eyes, she forced a smile as the bed dipped, rubbing her nose and quietly sniffling as he sat beside her.

“This can’t keep happening.” He sighed, hands buried deep into his long, silvery white hair. “I’m worried for you Kags, you and-”

“You shouldn’t worry about me, just focus on helping-”

“Rin. I know that Kags, I’ll help you any way I can.” He frowned. “But you need to see the effect this is having on you both. I’ll never tell you to go back, not when she’s still there but if you just try and explain to-”

“No.” Another loud sigh came from him,  he spun to face her, a sympathetic look burned deep in his golden eyes.

“He’s dense sometimes but he won’t think you’re lying about something so serious as-”

“Stop it! I can’t say a damn word without evidence. I know he’s my husband, I know I can talk to him but with her...” She choked on a sob.

“I’m sorry Kags, I-”

“You’ve said enough, thank you.” She whispered harshly and turned her head to the view outside her window, she waited for him to leave. She couldn’t bear to continue this conversation again. But he persisted.

“He’ll believe you if you just tell him,” he pressed. “You protected her, helped as much as you could, even now you’re still helping. He’ll do the same, he loves you.”

“Please leave.” She begged, tears collecting in her eyes as her nose began to sting.

“Just try.” He whispered, laying a hand on her shoulder and squeezing lightly. She heard the slow steps of his departure and the room plummeted into silence. He had finally left her in peace.

Drawing in a deep breath she turned to the vacant entrance of her bedroom and let out a long sigh. It was never as easy as “just talk to someone”, words simply were not enough to act as confirmed. Securing her hair atop her head, she pulled her protesting body out of its comfortable nest of blankets and pressed her feet to the solid wood floors. She could hear Inuyasha getting ready for work, so she had a few minutes to get herself ready before he’d seek her out again.

“Miss Kagome!” As soon as she took her first step outside of her room, the patter of furious little feet echoed through the hall as a small dark haired girl launched herself at Kagome and latched herself onto her leg.

“Hey Rin.” Reaching down, Kagome ruffled her hair, smoothing her thumb over the girl’s cheek.

“I heard you scream.” The beaming smile vanished from her small round face and fingers tightened their hold on Kagome’s leg as she cautiously scanned the hall.

Kagome forced a tight smile and murmured to Rin, “Everything’s okay sweetheart, I promise.” This seemed to soothe the child. Her small hand reached up, to rest on Kagome’s stomach, the slight swell hidden behind her shirt.

Rin beamed up at her. “Will he be here soon?” Kagome covered the girl’s small hand with her own. Every day, she was met with the same question yet never grew tired of returning with the same answer each time.

“Not yet, we still have some months to get through but when he’s ready to meet you, I’ll let you know.” Rin erupted into a fit of giggles, nodding her head eagerly.

“We’re going to be best friends! We can play hide and seek, just like how me and da-”. She quickly pulled her hand away. They shook as she clenched them in front of her stomach, cheeks flushed as her small, shallow breaths increased every few seconds. Kagome knelt down and rested her hand on the girl’s frail shoulder.

“Rin, it’s ok. Remember what I said, it’s safe here.” Encircling her arms around the shaking child, Kagome felt her heart tear into two. Her body was drained from the last few weeks. She’d cried so much that she wasn’t sure it was possible for her to shed more tears yet somehow, more tears fell from her cheeks.

“We’re safe.” Rin repeated.

Kagome sucked in a deep, fortifying breath. “Yes sweetheart, all three of us.”
