Meant to Be by yukihime
Lacuna
I intended to post this last week but my husband surprised me with a Nintendo Switch and Zelda, and work has been busier than expected so I’ve been distracted. I rewrote the ending three times and I feel confident enough to post this part now but it has not been beta read so I’m sure there are errors. The next part will be the final installment and after, I plan to rework Indelible.
If you’re interested in suggesting ideas or what to work on next, I’ve got a couple of things you can check out. One Shot Prompt Ideas & What would you like to see me post next?

Lacuna –a missing part
~ ~ ~
The dimly lit room echoed with the steady sound of pacing as the occupant searched for another way to accomplish his goal. The tray of food and wine was left forgotten as he stopped, once again, to search through the stack of papers beside the silver platter. He knew there was a way. Something so easy that it would be simple to miss. The sound of shuffling paper stopped. Chocolate eyes scanned the text. Togakushi village. A small farming community with less than a hundred residents. It was almost perfect. The only flaw was that it was bordering Sesshoumaru’s land. Naraku grunted as he read the last sentence. After the last incident, he would have to make sure that the demon lord did not interfere again, and there were a few ideas he had on a distraction. The potion had been a perfect way to capture both the priestess and shards. He even had Inuyasha trusting his spy. It would have worked so well.
“Damn that Sesshoumaru!” he cursed and slammed his fist on the table. The paper in his hand folded under his moment of fury. He had to make sure that everything went smoothly this time, and intended to leave nothing to chance. Eyes focused on the flame of the candle sitting on the desk as he calculated which strategic plan would work with the most favorable outcome. Several minutes passed before a smile spread across Naraku's features. He had the ideal method with the highest succession rate. Yes, it will work quite nicely. It was perfect. With a little time and patience, he would have the shards and Kagome in his hands.
Naraku summoned Hakudoshi who appeared before him. The child knelt waiting for his master to speak. “Inuyasha's group will be in Togakushi village in three days. I want you to go and find a suitable distraction, then wait for me,” he commanded and handed him a shard. The boy stood and nodded in understanding. Hakudoshi pivoted then stilled when Naraku spoke again, “Take Juromaru with you. I don’t want any failures.” He dipped his head in understanding then disappeared. Naraku moved back to the desk and pulled a couple of papers from a stack before calling Byakuya and Kagura. It was onto the second part of his plan. The two appeared within seconds. The man stood against a pillar off to his left while the wind demon glared at him from her kneeling position in the center of the marbled floor. “I have a job for you two,” Naraku spoke as he glanced at Kagura before training his eyes on the leaning man. He tossed a note toward the edge of the table in front of him.
Byakuya pushed himself off the column to walk toward the desk. Picking the paper up, he quickly read the contents. The detachment glanced up to meet Naraku's eyes before nodding. “Very well,” he replied. With a slight shake of his head, Byakuya turned around and waved the paper in the air before the parchment burst into flames. “Come on, Kagura, we've got some work to do. This’ll be fun,” the raven-haired man spoke with laughter. The woman followed, glancing at Naraku before disappearing. She had a bad feeling about this. Naraku would sacrifice anything if it meant accomplishing his objective.

Sesshoumaru woke to find himself reaching out to the opposite side of the bed. His hand met the cold sheets and he slowly opened his eyes to find himself alone. The demon rolled over to stare at the ceiling before forcing himself out of the empty warmth. It had been three weeks since her departure and he was met with another solitary sunrise. It didn’t help that they had remained close to his borders, though he understood Inuyasha’s reasoning, he hadn't realized how much he would miss her, and it both appalled and enraged him. The last thing he wanted was attachments and Sesshoumaru knew that he couldn’t see her with Inuyasha without giving something away. Everything that reminded him of her seemed to set him off. It's frustrating and infuriating, he thought as he quickly dressed. Even Rin had been affected more than he had first realized. Kagome’s brief stay had brought a light about in the child that he had not seen before, and she had made a habit of bursting into his bed chambers when the sun rose. Her purpose only fueled his guilt. Sesshoumaru managed to make it into the lounge area before he heard the door open and the little girl emerged, greeting him with a smile. “Good morning, Rin,” he warmly welcomed her. It was a side he showed for few in his life.
She returned the gesture as she bounced toward him. “Good morning! Has Kagome's letter come yet?” she asked with stars in her eyes. The excitement oozed off of her as she could barely contain herself. Rin was sure that Kagome would keep her promise and wouldn’t forget her.
He forced a smile and shook his head. “I'll check and let you know,” he replied as he laid a hand on her head. He knew there would be no letter waiting. “Why don't we eat breakfast first?” he asked, looking down at her. He hadn't had the heart to tell the child the truth and any distraction was welcomed.
Rin threw her hands in the air. “Yeah,” she shouted with a smile on her face and grabbed his hand to pull him along. Rin chatted about picking flowers as the duo ate the hot meal before Sesshoumaru handed her off to the child-keeper. It was painfully clear that Rin had latched herself onto Kagome yet there was nothing he could do to change the situation. He retreated to his office, shutting himself inside, and dropped into the chair behind the large oak desk. Sesshoumaru sighed heavily before reaching for the papers in front of him. He knew it was going to be another long day and decided to distract himself with the endless paperwork.

Kagura sat on the high branch waiting for Byakuya as she watched the terrain below. He had told her to wait before disappearing over an hour ago. Sesshoumaru's borders began about two miles in the direction they had been heading. It had been a relief when he told her they were going to set up here. She was beginning to wonder what exactly Naraku wanted them to do. The wind changed and she sensed Byakuya approaching. The branch shifted and he appeared beside her. “What are we doing here?” she quietly asked, not bothering to look at him.
The man eyed her a long minute before speaking, watching her to weigh her reaction. Kagura couldn’t be completely trusted and, if needed, could be sacrificed for the objective. “He wants Sesshoumaru distracted for a couple of days,” he told her. She didn’t need more information than necessary.
She nodded, knowing that he had already planned and put in motion another attack on Inuyasha. “It won't be easy. Did he give any suggestions?” the demon inquired. It would be playing with fire to go in without some sort of a plan. There would be more guards to deal with on top of the lord.
“Yes,” Byakuya nodded and smiled. The twinkle in his eyes was lost to Kagura. “Take the child,” he simply stated, uncrossing his arms.
Kagura shifted to stare at him, surprised by the words she heard. “We would be signing our death warrant,” she replied softly, almost rebuffing him for the suggestion. It was more than apparent that the lord was attached to the human. What purpose did Naraku hope to accomplish? Their deaths or Sesshoumaru's rage? Though Kagura was sure both was equally bound to happen.
“We have a little while to watch for a good opening. When the time comes, I'll keep him busy while you grab the girl,” Byakuya ordered her. He didn’t need to remind her that her life was always part of the bargain.
Kagura slightly shook her head. “This won't go well for us,” she spoke before she stood. The branched shifted under the relief of her weight as she floated to the ground. She needed distance from Byakuya to think. Sending that ruthless child, Hakudoshi, after the human priestess showed the fury that Naraku had in his failure to possess her. She doubted it would end well for the human.

Hakudoshi floated several feet above the ground with his pale pink barrier in place. He glanced back when the sound of clanking metal suddenly stopped. The chains and mask were still in place, safely binding the crazed detachment until he was needed. Juromaru wasn't one that could be completely trusted. It was a clever trick to use a shard as well as the raging demon and his brother as a distraction against Inuyasha. Between the three, it was be easy to snatch the woman. Hakudoshi faced forward and pulled the tainted jewel out of his pocket, staring at the sliver of glass. It was ironic that something so small could bring so much chaos, death, and destruction. The child smiled before slipping the treasure back into the folds of his clothes. It was only a matter of time before the demons came flocking, and he would patiently wait. He could see the torturous days that would await Kagome if Naraku succeeded.
The sound of shifting brush signaled the first encounter. A giant bear demon erupted from the tree line and darted toward Hakudoshi, who simply shifted out of the way. A growl caught the grizzle’s attention before an enormous gray wolf bounded out to take the brown bear's head. The beast turned to stare at the strange duo. “What are you doing with a sacred shard, boy?” came the low rumble of the demon's voice.
“I'm looking for someone worthy. Do you wish to possess more power?” Hakudoshi questioned in turn. The wolf stepped back, ears perked before disappearing in the forest. The boy shrugged with mild disinterest before continuing along the path. There would be more promising prospects. It made no difference to him who he received the fragment. Within half an hour, he was only miles away from the village. He decided to camp out, letting the worms crawl to him. It didn't take long before another showed.
A black bear, larger than the one before, emerged over the hill across from him. He noted the caution with which it approached, stopping short to speak. “I see you have a shard,” the voice was gnarled and rough. A badly healed scar ran along its face and throat.
Hakudoshi hid his pleasure. The lust for more power was rolling off of this one. “Do you want it?” he asked, carefully watching the demon. It would drive him mad and he would surely die by Inuyasha’s blade but he would also be an adequate diversion, holding the group at bay until they were safely away.
“You're going to just give it to me?” the bear queried, distrusting what the child was offering. The demon glanced at the shackled companion standing several feet away, leary of the other’s words and quiet observer. It was suspicious but he had gained from such unorthodox unions before.
“I have no need of it anymore. You can have it as long as you give me something in return,” he explained. It would seem like a simple request and Hakudoshi doubted the bear would turn the offer down. He calmly waited for the inquiry.
“And what is this favor that you can not accomplish?” he requested as his eyes darted between the two that stood across from him. He was waiting and watching for any aggressive behavior.
“If a half-demon dressed in red comes for the shard, kill him but leave the humans. I need one of them alive. I will be recognized and not able to catch them off-guard but I can give aide when needed.” The bear hesitated and he could see the doubt in his features. “It’s just one weak half-demon. Surely, after you possess the shard, you could easily overcome him. If you do not agree with my terms, I will be forced to find another and you will lose the chance to wield a shard,” Hakudoshi reminded him, holding the fragment out for him to see.
The bear nodded, agreeing to the criteria, and reached out. The young demon dropped the glass fragment into his clawed paw. “I will be watching,” he told him before disappearing with the chained companion.

For the hundredth time that day, Kagome speculated on the possibility that something occurred between her and Sesshoumaru. The gnawing feeling wouldn't leave her alone and his expression when he handed her the jar of shards was burned into her mind. She was certain sorrow crossed his features. It only confused her more. She felt compelled to believe that something had transpired, but wasn't exactly sure what it was. She didn’t know if what she saw was real or not, or if it was a figment of her imagination, but she glimpsed an unimaginable sadness in his eyes and couldn’t let that go. That one memory pulled at her heart, consumed her waking thoughts, and haunted her in her dreams. She couldn't forget the depth of solitude that Kagome caught in his golden gaze. It ate at her as did his words. “You had a fever.” His voice echoed in her thoughts. It was the only explanation he gave and had to hold some truth. Sesshoumaru wasn’t known to lie and she was sure that he had given her a hint, even if it was in some small way. She only needed to remember.
The woman was dragged back to reality when Inuyasha pulled her to a stop. “Kagome, are you listening?” he asked for the thousandth time that day. His concern had only built since their departure from his brother’s home. Both had behaved strangely when they arrived and it wasn’t something that Inuyasha could shake. He had confided to Miroku about his suspicions but the monk doubted the Sesshoumaru would stoop so low given his attitude toward humans. His words didn’t alleviate the nagging feeling which refused to be quelled. Himeko’s disappearance had caused concern but they had more pressing worries when Kagome couldn’t be found. Her scent had just vanished from the hot spring along with their newest acquaintance which left Inuyasha in a panic. He had taken his frustrations out on Sango since the two were supposed to be together.
Kagome could only glare at him before moving away, leaving him to stand dumbfounded in her wake. Her anger with him had only grown since they left Sesshoumaru’s fortress. Inuyasha was constantly interrupting her thoughts and refusing to leave her side. His usual indifference toward being emotionally supportive had done a complete three-sixty in the past month. It was beginning to become more than an annoyance and provoked her in ways she didn’t understand. When Kagome felt she was on the verge of remembering something, Inuyasha was suddenly there, distracting her. She was sure it was intentional on his part which only fueled her fury toward him, and herself.
A few hours later, they made camp near a meager river less than two miles south of a small village. Kagome steered clear of the Inuyasha by dragging Sango with her to the stream. They required water for dinner and she wanted him to get the message - she needed distance from him. Since the incident, Inuyasha had been wary of staying in or near villages and had everyone keep a close eye on her, never leaving her alone. It was stifling but she understood the reasoning, even if she didn’t remember. The woman eyed her friend as they knelt on the bank. Kagome bit her tongue and plunged the container into the water, submerging it so that the liquid filled it faster. She wanted to tell Sango what she felt even though she knew how it would sound. She needed to know if she was going crazy. “You think I’m being too hard on Inuyasha?” she asked because it my was the only thing she could think to break the silence.
Sango let out a light sigh as she mimicked the younger female’s movements. The cool water quickly flowed into the container. “Kagome, I know Inuyasha is getting on your nerves, and I can understand your frustrations, but he's only trying to make up for what happened to you in his own way,” she tried to explain. It was a guilt that she carried as well. It had been her duty to stay with Kagome that night and she shouldn’t have relied on Himeko. It was clear that the young woman wasn’t as experienced as everyone else. When she was on her way back to camp, Sango crossed paths with the Himeko before a noise prompted the slayer to send their new companion to protect Kagome so she could check it out. When the hunteress returned to the hot spring, both women had vanished, leaving only Kagome’s clothing and bathing supplies as a sign they had been there.
Kagome knew she had brought up a pain in her friend that couldn’t be consoled. Her absence of memory bothered more than just her. Sango had pleaded for her forgiveness when they made camp the first night she was reunited with them. “I know and I don’t blame any of you for what happened,” she hastily replied then glanced around before continuing, “but he's only making it worse. I feel like he smothering me and that he doesn't want me to remember,” Kagome tried to explain as clearly as she could.
Sango couldn't argue with her softly spoken statement and nodded. She, and Miroku, had come to the same conclusion. She knew the monk had tried speaking with Inuyasha about his behavior but he just wouldn't listen. Neither faulted him for those insecurities but both realized that it could push her away. Miroku later confided that Inuyasha had been afraid about what might have happened between Kagome and Sesshoumaru. They doubted that the demon would even want to lay a hand on a human and felt Inuyasha's fears were unfounded but couldn’t ease those worries. Sango pulled her container from the river and laid a hand on her friend’s shoulder. “Everything will work out, Kagome, you’ll see. Try to not worry yourself so much. Your memories will come back - just give it time,” she spoke gently, squeezing her in reassurance. “And try to go easy on Inuyasha.”
Kagome nodded as they stood. Sango was right. She just needed to relax and give herself time to cool off. Although being so cross toward Inuyasha, which was sometimes easier said than done. When the women entered camp, the men were around a recently dug pit, building a fire. Inuyasha met her eyes and Kagome tried to give him a smile to ease his worry. It wasn’t his fault It wasn’t anyone’s. Kagome knew that, understood that, but not knowing was still hard for her.
Once the fire was steadily burning, the two men left to catch dinner while Sango stayed behind, helping Kagome prepare for their return. Inuyasha had asked her, after her return, to help him keep a close eye on the priestess. He believed Naraku would attempt another abduction and was leary to leave her unguarded. It was the reason they stayed close to Sesshoumaru's lands. Sango found it hard to turn him down since she agreed with his assumption and couldn’t shake the feeling that something did happen. She was afraid for her friend and Kagome’s quiet behavior was beginning to really worry her. What if the truth was worse than either imagined? The sound of twigs breaking brought her to her feet. She whirled around to see Miroku and Inuyasha, with Shippou on his shoulder, emerging from the trees. Sango turned to Kagome as glanced up and waved. “Looks like they were successful,” she stated with a smile. “Fish will be a welcomed break from boar meat,” she remarked as she squatted back to stoke the fire before adding a few more branches.
“We caught ten,” Inuyasha said with pride as he elbowed Miroku. “I managed to get seven big ones,” he boosted. At least one thing was going well for him. Together, they had finished in less than thirty minutes. He intentionally drug his feet, wanting to prolong his time to think. It was a complicated situation.
“Inuyasha was lucky today,” Miroku mumbled to them as he ambled in after the half-demon and sat next to Sango. He had to admit defeat and his friend sometimes had a hard time letting go. The monk knew he would hear about this for a while.
The woman smiled at him before she glanced over to watch the two interact. It was hard on everyone. She knew Kagome comprehended that but Sango also understood suppressing one’s heart can be an impossible task. Her desire to know what happened to her might be too great. “Do you think they will be okay?” she asked him quietly. It was a question that required several answers.
Miroku nodded. He spoke with Inuyasha and, with some luck, he had confidence they could move forward. The monk pulled her with him, signaling for her to follow. “Come on, let’s give them some space.” The guilt was eating at Inuyasha but it would be something that he needed to do alone. Miroku could understand Inuyasha’s situation and knew this would be hard for him but there was little they could do beyond give him advice and hope it goes well.
Inuyasha noticed the two leaving before he turned his attention to Kagome, who sat skewering the fish. He gently took it from her, drawing the woman’s attention. “Let me,” he spoke, trying to find a way to break the ice. She nodded, mumbling a thank you, as he prepped another for the fire. Kagome handed him one makeshift rod after another until all were placed over the flames. The duo sat in silence as Inuyasha turned the fish. “I found a hot spring about twenty yards north of here. If you want a hot bath, I’m sure Sango would go with you,” he softly told her.
Kagome stilled at his words, surprised that he would even suggest it after the last time. Inuyasha knew that she never turned down a chance for a warm bath since it was so rare. “Are you sure?” she asked, uncertain of how she should answer. She didn’t want to start another fight.
Inuyasha nodded and she genuinely smiled at him. “Technically, it’s on Sesshoumaru’s lands, so you should be fine,” he told her. It didn’t comfort him to see relief sweep across her features before she stood and readied her things. She didn’t want him to retract his offer. The minute Sango returned, Kagome grabbed her and practically ran in the direction he had indicated. Inuyasha tried to let his hurt go, telling himself that he had read something that wasn’t there.
It didn’t take long for the women to reach the waters. Kagome quickly stripped herself and entered the water, sighing as the warmth relieved some of the tension in her body. “Ah, it feels so great,” she stated as she leaned against the rocks, closing her eyes and letting herself float. Sango slipped in beside her, laughing at her friend. “Who knew Inuyasha had it in him,” she mumbled, referring to his ability to let her out of his sight.
Sango smiled. “I told you that he would surprise you,” her tone was reassuring, and it was a pleasant surprise to hear that he had suggested it.
“Yeah,” she responded absently, letting her worries drift away. She only wanted to enjoy the warmth of the water. Her thoughts wandered to the recent dreams that plagued her. Sesshoumaru filled her mind, even when she was asleep and Kagome could be sure if they were figments of her imagination/delusions or memories. It bothered her more than she could tell her friends. A sudden overwhelming feeling of deja vu came over the woman and she felt that, if she opened her eyes, he would be standing over her. Blue eyes slowly opened to reveal the quiet night scenery before her. Disappointment filled her heart. Wisps of him were just out of her reach and disappeared before she could grasp them. She let a sigh escape as she closed the world off.
Sango watched her friend. Silence was never was of Kagome's traits. It made her nervous when the woman didn’t open up to her and it was apparent that there was something she was hiding. “Kagome, we’ve been traveling along Sesshoumaru’s borders for almost a month. It would be impossible for him to not notice a shard or Naraku,” she commented, hoping to gently lead her into conversation. “Do you think that Inuyasha is just taking precautions?” she asked, wondering if Kagome had thought of the anger he held toward his brother and how much he needed to overcome those feelings to ensure an extra layer of protection for her.
It was something she had thought of as well. His decision signaled that Inuyasha was more concerned than he let on and, though it didn’t alarm her as much as she believed it should, it showed a maturity on his behalf. “I think he’s just being cautious,” she replied honestly but part of her also thought that Inuyasha was setting a trap. Kagome held her tongue, letting the silence hang between them. The news of a shard would bring Naraku as well and, one day, they would kill him, freeing themselves from his reign of terror and torment. Sesshoumaru came to mind. It would be in their best interests to directly ask for his help but the woman already knew that Inuyasha would refuse to even entertain the idea. His strategy wasn’t as soundproof as he hoped. There was no guarantee his brother would come to their aid even with them traveling so close. Yet, she couldn’t quell the flutter her heart made at the thought of seeing him again. “Let’s hope that nothing happens,” she said, though Sango could hear the desire in her voice.

Sesshoumaru kept a close eye on Kagome as she traveled just outside his borders. It had been clear their destination was Togakushi. He assumed it was to investigate the rumor of a shard. The same gossip had reached him and the demon had planned to ignore it until the emanating aura intensified that morning. His concerns grew as the possibility of another trap for Kagome heightened with every beat of his heart. It prompted him into action. Although he knew what his brother’s reaction would be, and that he would need to endure the sight of them together, he could not ignore the harm that might befall Kagome. When Sesshoumaru was several hundred feet from the castle, Byakuya appeared in his path. The lord stopped, letting a deep growl go to show his irritation. “Move,” he commanded. He didn’t have time to deal with distractions and, if Byakuya was here, then Naraku was up to something.
The demon kept his distance, careful to leave himself an escape route. Because the lord had taken action, they were forced act. His impromptu appearance was sure to alert the demon but they had little choice other than to put his plan in motion. He only needed to buy enough time for Kagura to get the child. “At least take a moment to hear what I have to say,” Byakuya spoke with a smile.
“I do not make deals with half-breeds like you,” he replied, knowing there was a reason he was trying to stall him. “What are you attempting to accomplish?” Sesshoumaru pushed. The smile on Byakuya’s face widened as he shrugged, prompting the lord to turn and dart back to the fortress. Naraku rarely sent out his attachments alone and without some strategy. Though he couldn’t be sure what Byakuya had hoped to achieve, he needed to secure Rin before he went to Kagome, and he had little time.
Byakuya folded his arms over his chest. “Damn, he’s fast,” he muttered. The demon was sharp. He wasn’t one for confrontation and could only hope that he had given his companion enough time to snatch the human. If things went smoothly, they would have enough leverage to keep both brothers at bay.
The wind demon appeared with the child squirming in her arms. “Dammit,” she cursed, trying to subdue the girl. “Just be still.” Even though she was forced to go along with the plan, she didn’t desire to bring harm to a child, regardless of whether they were demon or human. And Kagura was even more hesitate to take her to Naraku.
“You’re going to be in big trouble when Lord Sesshoumaru gets here,” she shouted at them as she pushed against the woman’s side. He was really scary when he was mad, and though Rin had never angered him to that point, she had witnessed it on more than one occasion.
“Shall we be going?” Byakuya inquired, ignoring the girl’s proclamation. They had little time and had already stayed too long. He turned to see Sesshoumaru, eyes stained red from anger, and managed to dodge the attack. “Whoa,” he uttered in surprise. “That was close. I guess it’s time to go,” he spoke as he disappeared in the surrounding thicket.
Kagura tossed the child at the demon lord before pulling a feather from her hair and ascending into the sky. She needed distance between them and could only hope that the girl would repeat her warning. She couldn’t chance being seen conversing with the enemy. Sesshoumaru caught the child as he glared up after the assailant.
“Lord Sesshoumaru,” Jaken’s voice called as A-Un landed next to the demon. “I brought the guards,” he told him. Two heavily-armed and well-dressed dog demons planted themselves on either side of the dragon, waiting orders.
“Take Rin back and do not let her out of your sight or the castle walls,” he ordered, putting her in the saddle on the beast. The lord turned and continued his advancement toward Togakushi.

The village was in chaos when the group arrived. The air was saturated with the smell of blood and death and several of the southern buildings had been demolished. As they traveled deeper into the village, the path of destruction tapered off until they came upon the villagers filling the market center. Inuyasha grew impatient when the people couldn’t clearly explain what had happened. Their frightened stories were just snippets of the had occured. What they had managed to piece together was that a large demon bear had emerged from the forest and began to rampage, killing anyone who crossed his path. A passing monk had come to their aid but, after defeating the beast, he barred himself in the small temple.
Kagome pulled on Inuyasha’s sleeve. “The monk has the shard and its strong,” she whispered to him, not drawing attention. It had probably corrupted the man. She doubted he would have the ability to protect himself from the darkness. The people in the village also seemed off. Kagome couldn’t put her finger on it but was sure it was connected to the jewel fragment.
“The villagers seem to be acting strange, as well,” Miroku spoke softly. Sango kept her eyes trained on the building that was indicated to them while watching the locals. “There seem to be a handful that aren’t under his spell and said that he would only come out at night.” The man switched his staff to the opposing hand, freeing the wind tunnel in case he needed to use it.`
That information was all Inuyasha needed. Before Kagome could stop him, he had rushed forward, ignoring the humans and their caution. “Wait! Inuyasha, it’s too dangerous!” she shouted as she ran after him. Sango was on her heels as Miroku brought up the rear. The tainted shard was pulsing, overflowing with energy. It wouldn’t be something he could handle without help. Why wouldn’t he just listen before jumping into a fight? Kagome could sense the shard’s movement and readied an arrow, taking aim for the roof of the building. Sango and Miroku stopped beside her, prepared for the next move. Inuyasha continued forward as a figure broke through the clay singles, sending the pottery raining down as he descended on the nearest target.
Inuyasha managed to block the swing and Kagome released the arrow, hitting the disfigured monk in the chest. The bright purifying light engulfed the area, blinding them. As the light faded, Sango and Miroku revealed that Kagome had disappeared. Inuyasha turned at the sound of their voices calling out for her. Panic hit him as his heart dropped and Kagome wasn’t anywhere in sight.
The demon lord surveyed the area in the direction of Togakushi village. The beam of light that suddenly erupted directed Sesshoumaru to the group’s location and he landed to see his brother and friends in a panic. The woman’s scent was faint and quickly fading. He shifted in the direction fragrant wisps before Inuyasha’s angry voice stopped him. “What the hell are you doing here?” he demanded as he moved toward him.
“What happened?” he inquired, ignoring the question. They had little time to make a move. It was dangerous for her.
Inuyasha growled before Miroku spoke up at Sango’s urging. “He can help us,” the monk said, stopping beside his friend. “Inuyasha, it’ll be faster this way.” His gentle reminder prompted the half-demon to nod. Miroku turned to the demon. “We came after hearing about a shard. A monk had it in his possession and it turned him. He attacked as we approached,” he explained, smudging the truth a little. “After the light cleared, Kagome was missing.”
His conclusion was obvious but that meant they had no other information. Sango shifted to his left. “We need to move quickly if we’re going to find her before anything happens,” the woman pushed. Sesshoumaru nodded and turned to follow the waning perfume. He had an idea of what Naraku would once he had Kagome.
His brother hurried to his side and lowered his voice. “I know why you’re suddenly so interested in helping,” he remarked.
Sesshoumaru could see he was irritated. “Oh, and why is that?” he countered. His brother could not possibly know what had transpired, and Kagome held no memory of their encounter. Even his best guess would not come close.
“You want near Kagome. I don’t know why, but you’re up to something,” he replied with confidence.
“Hn,” the demon grunted at his reasoning. It was flawed but not entirely wrong. They had little time and did not want to waste it on arguing with his ignorant sibling. “Come,” he directed as lead them deeper into the forest.

When Kagome came to, her head was throbbing. The last thing she remembered was purifying the monk. Then someone had knocked her out. The cool sheets under her fingers drew her out of her haze and she took in the surroundings. The bed she was on was large and one of a few pieces of furniture in the room. A nightstand stood next to the mattress with an array of floor cushions near a low lying table across the foot of the bed. The room had no windows either. She pushed herself off the platform and moved to the door, which was to her right, twisting the handle. It was locked. Kagome turned to glance around the room and ran to the nightstand, pulling open the drawers, looking for anything she could to help her open the exit. “Damn,” she cursed as her search yielded nothing useful. A familiar laugh caused the woman to spin. Naraku sat in the middle of the pillows, grinning at her. He hadn’t been there a moment ago. “I don’t have the shards on me. What do you want?” Kagome spat out, glaring at him as he shrugged.
“I already knew that,” he replied, not bothering to move from his seat. Her hot and angry gaze bore into him, and Naraku found that he didn’t mind her current mood. The hate in her eyes was alluring and he wanted to enjoy it for as long as possible. “I assumed you’d realized that I was after both you and the shards. I expected you to hide them from me and you don’t disappoint.” Naraku stood and moved toward Kagome. “After my first plan was botched, I tried to derive something that would be successful.”
She took a step back. “First plan?” she echoed, catching the phrasing he used. The fear began to rise in her. Naraku had predicted what she would do and had already planned for it. She was in a dangerous situation and had no way to reach out for help.
He grinned at the tremor of despair in her features. “I was enjoying your attempt at escape. You needn’t stop because I’m here,” Naraku told her as he walked past the woman to sit on the bed. It was the same post he had been in a few hours ago as he watched the slumbering priestess. He ignored her jump as he passed, taking the movement as an indication of her vigilance. “You can continue,” he motioned to her. He knew she understood the severity of her situation and relished in knowing she could do nothing to defend herself.
“What the hell are you getting at?” she demanded, wanting to know what his first plan had been. There was a tug in the back of her mind, telling her that he knew what had happened to her lost memory. She approached the bed but made sure to keep herself over an arm’s length away. “Tell me what you did.”
“I suppose this is the best way, after all,” he spoke, smiling at her as he stood. “You see, I had planned on taking you the easy way. Despite my hatred for you, I didn't want you to suffer,” he half laughed, shaking his head. His human heart had wanted Kikyou for so long that Naraku’s hate had festered for the woman. The female that stood before him was her and was not. She resembled the dead priestess yet Kagome was her own person. “However, Sesshoumaru saw fit to interfere and, to be honest, I guess I prefer you fighting.” Naraku moved toward her and she stepped back in response.
“What are you talking about? What did you do to me?” She tried to keep her voice from shaking but her heart was racing and it was hard to remain steady and strong. “Sesshoumaru,” she mumbled. Flashes of a woman then the demon lord and being in his arms seared through her mind, and Kagome gripped her head in pain. “Don’t come near me!” she screamed.
Naraku ignored her demand. “My puppet poisoned you, in a sense.” His nonchalant shrug made her gasp at how he held no regard for anything other than himself. His manipulation knew no bounds. “The spell’s effects would have been sealed if you two’d had sex. Instead, the potion erased all of your memories, even the ones of Himeko. I believed I had lost my chance but I have to admit that Sesshoumaru has more honor than I thought. I mean, to let you go after such a perfect opportunity,” he shook his head. It was beyond his comprehension. “You were to fall for me. It would have been so ironic,” he laughed when he saw the anguish and horror on her face.
Kagome lunged at him, screaming out and managing to lay a hand on his arm. His skin started to turn black as she poured purifying energy into him. She was blinded by rage and left herself open as Naraku knocked her grip off and lashed out, hitting her across the face. She landed on the bed allowing him to pin her against the mattress. “I could just see Inuyasha’s rage,” he whispered, his hot breath on her neck as he began trailing kisses down her shoulder. His touches made her sick and she kneed him in the groin in an attempt to get him off of her. Naraku groaned in pain before he put his hands around her neck and squeezed until she passed out.
“She’s grown more powerful since you’ve last seen her,” Byakuya’s voice echoed behind him. He was about to interject before his master released her. He could tell her breathing had leveled out. Naraku wanted her alive and he’d interfer if the need arose. Those were his orders. “It seems we’ll have to wait a little longer.”
Naraku nodded as he rose off of her limb body. “Have Kagura come ready her,” he ordered, standing over her before disappearing. He had no desire to take her while she was unconscious. The half-demon wanted to see the fear in her eyes before he took her then he would force her to submit through the potion.
When Kagome came to, she was laying on the bed and had been changed into a simple blue yukata, covered with a blanket. She sat up to see Kagura sitting at her feet. “He’s not far,” she spoke, not turning around. “There’s food and wine for you.” The demon motioned toward the table and Kagome’s eyes followed the direction. A silver platter holding fruits, breads, and fish sat next to a goblet and pitcher of dark red liquid. She would be stupid to accept anything offered. She knew that Naraku’s admission was meant to put her on edge and she hated to admit that it worked. “Don’t worry, I prepared the food and it’s safe.” Kagura turned to meet her eyes. “If you want to survive, you need to eat to keep your strength.”
She nodded at the woman’s form of encouragement and shifted off of the bedding to move to the table. Kagome sat and hesitated before tossing in a piece of food. It tasted fine. She glanced over as Kagura joined her. “Did you change my clothes?” she asked, offering her a slice of bread. She nodded, taking the offering. “Are you supposed to be watching me?”
“Yes,” she glanced around. “You won’t be able to escape. He’s put up enough barriers that even you can’t get through.” She put her elbow on the table to prop up her chin as she glanced over at the human. Her predicament seemed hopeless and Kagura was sure she was doomed but she had held those certainties before and the human had always surprised her. She was curious to see how she would escape her fate this round.
“Are we hidden? Even from Sesshoumaru?” she asked. There was always a way out. All she needed to do was look for it. Kagome glanced at the food spread out before her. It was no secret Kagura held a hatred for Naraku and might be coerced into helping.
“I doubt even he would be able to sense us.” Naraku had gained the ability to hide himself and he used it frequently. It was his trump card and the way he managed to escape after every encounter. Kagura doubted that he would reveal such an advantage to her and thought it better to keep her mouth shut. She didn’t need any more of his anger at her failures. Kagura would figure out a different way to thwart him. “He’s patient, so you should get your rest.”
Kagome nodded and quickly finished her food. Kagura was right. She needed to store her strength and patiently wait for an opening. He would become sloppy and make a mistake, and she would be there when it happened. She could be endure this too. He wasn’t going to break her, she refused to end up like Kikyou, and she wasn’t going to be a tool Naraku used to hurt Inuyasha either. Kagura stood and drew Kagome out of her thoughts. She wanted to ask her to stay a little longer. She didn’t want to be alone. Though they had never seen eye-to-eye and often clashed over shards, Kagome didn’t believe Kagura truly desired to end their lives. She had the opportunity many times but always seemed to abandon her murderous intentions in lieu of other methods that had set them back. Sesshoumaru was the first to point this out and offered it as a possible means of gaining information. She now understood what it was that he saw in her. There was a boundless hatred coupled with an incredible sadness that lingered in her crimson eyes.
The door closed behind the demon and Kagome was left alone within the polished prison. She sighed and moved back to the bed. She was left with little choice but to erect a protective barrier. At Inuyasha’s request, Kikyou had taught her after her last disappearance. Kagome often wondered how that conversation must have went and whether she agreed or he had to coerce her into it. The woman would have liked to believe that Kikyou volunteered her knowledge. She hadn’t sensed any animosity from her during the handful of lessons. Kagome was a quick learner and she thought it was an easy incantation to remember. After a few hours, slumber overcame her and when she woke next, she couldn’t tell how long she had slept. Her windowless prison also kept her ignorant of the passage of time. Kagura had brought another tray but only stayed a few minutes before she was summoned away. Kagome didn’t think that was a good sign and waited what felt like hours before Naraku showed himself.
She had to force herself to keep her position as every muscle screamed to attack. The smile that spread across his features told Kagome that he knew the resentment and restraint she held towards him. He relished it. “Good morning,” he spoke as he moved to sit near her. Naraku expected her to shift away, out of arm’s length, but she didn’t budge. “Don’t worry about Kagura. I sent her out for a few things for you,” he explained. Though it was a way to keep her attention, he could see that she had expected his disobedient severed servant. He briefly wondered if the two had a connection but pushed that aside to concentrate on the potentially dangerous woman in front of him. He didn’t believe she could tap into her powers at will and wanted to use that to his advantage. It was clear that Kikyou had taught her a few tricks. His attempt to taint her while she slept was thwarted by that dead priestess yet again. His desire to make this process easy on her was swept away by the barrier and Naraku was forced to go to Plan B - Coercion.
She managed to keep her mouth shut for about thirty seconds as Kagome wondered what the hell he was having collected for her and how long he was planning to keep her alive. “How generous but I’ll pass, thank you,” she quipped back. She didn’t want anything from him and didn’t want to encourage him. She wanted to establish a clear line for him and didn’t care to hold her tongue anymore. “Whatever it is that you are after, just spit it out. I’m not in the mood for small talk.”
Naraku laughed at her words. He admired how forward she was. It was a quality he could appreciate. “I want you.” His simple and short statement shook Kagome and she wasn’t sure how to respond. A sultry smile crossed his lips and he leaned toward her. “I want all of you, every inch and every thought. I want to consume you,” he spoke, lowering his voice with every word. Naraku stilled just a few inches from Kagome’s face. He could see the fear and revulsion that flashed in her eyes. He reached out and softly stroked her cheek. “I can be considerate or harsh. It’s your choice, Kagome.”
She flinched under his hand and swallowed as she backed away. “Don’t touch me,” she seethed through gritted teeth. “I don’t want you anywhere near me, and I’m not going to just submit because you asked.” As she spoke, her anger rose and she slapped his hand aside. Kagome knew that there would be repercussions but she couldn’t stomach him on top of her. She’d pick death before sleeping with him and she wanted him to know that.
“I can’t say I’m surprised,” he replied and leaned back. “To be honest, I prefer the conquest. The idea of you crying and screaming under me makes me want to take you,” he explained as he stood. On instinct, Kagome got to her feet, ignoring the way the room spun for a split second, and put space between them. She knew that it would not help but any time she could buy would improve her chances of survival. Keeping the barrier up wasn’t a difficult task but required energy and she was running low on that. She suspected he had an object that was slowly draining her stamina, but she hadn’t found it and didn’t want to bring it up to Kagura. “Since you’ve made your decision, we should move forward.”
Kagome didn’t have the opportunity to defend herself as his hands grabbed her shoulders and threw her onto the bed. Her barrier shattered and his miasma began to seep in. She coughed as the heavy, thick poison coated the inside of her lungs, draining her strength. It was hard to breathe and her vision blurred before Naraku filled her view. “Please, don’t,” she choked, trying to push him off of her.
He knocked her hands away and untied the blue yukata, revealing the pale pink underwear. The blushing color only emphasised her porcelain skin. Naraku slipped the robe off of her shoulders before running his hands over her body. “I wonder how far Sesshoumaru got? How much did he see?” he inquired in a soft tone as he unclipped the bra. Her breasts shifted and the garment slid off of one of the mounds, revealing her bare bosom. Kagome shut her eyes and tried to keep the tears at bay as he touched her. Naraku leaned down and whispered in her ear, “Open your eyes, Kagome. I want you to see me.” She shook her head in response. The last thing she wanted to see was the elation in his face. He wrapped his hands around her neck. “You don’t have a choice,” he told her as he squeezed, slowly smothering her.
Kagome’s eyes shot open to see his peering down at her and an ecstatic smile on his face. She awkwardly tried to pull his fingers away, scratching her skin in the process. The small gasps of air that she could get into her lungs were not enough to stop the burning in her chest or the screams of blood pumping through her veins. He applied more pressure, completely cutting off her air. She bucked under him, kicking the bedding as his weight held her in place, trying to get any advantage that might free her. Every part of her body was shouting for oxygen. Her vision began to blur and thoughts scattered as the world started to darken. Sesshoumaru filled her mind and she found herself calling out to him. Though she knew that he couldn’t help, it didn’t stop the woman from mouthing his name. There was the faint sound of something breaking and Kagome’s last thought was that her neck was broken before Sesshoumaru’s voice echoed around her, calling out. Her eyes rolled into the back of her head and fingers dropped to the bedding as the reality turned to black.
The splintering of the wooden door jarred Naraku out of his trance. Red eyes turned to see Sesshoumaru’s form fill the frame. The half-demon saw the blood consume the lord’s vision before he darted forward, sliding Bakusaiga into his chest and knocking him off of Kagome. He landed hard against the wall and fell to the floor, before severing his own head. The body was infected and Naraku was forced to abandon it.
Sesshoumaru watched the head disappear as the body began to bubble, quickly decomposing, before he turned to the woman laying on the bed. Her half nude form did nothing to calm the rage and he moved to cover her as Inuyasha appeared, choking on the poisonous gas that emanated from the room. He growled when his brother made an attempt to approach and slid his hands under her limp form, lifting her off of the mattress. Sesshoumaru did not flinch under Inuyasha’s hard eyes nor the gaze of the others as he met them outside the den.
The group watched him ascend into the sky before they followed. Miroku and Sango knew to keep the questions to themselves as they passed glances between one another and at Inuyasha. The mixture of emotions on their friend’s face was all they needed to know that the situation was not good. Though they didn’t know how Kagome was found, the fact that she was still alive was both a blessing and a curse. The group traveled toward the Western fortress as they watched the white of Sesshoumaru’s kimono disappear. It was impossible for them to keep his pace and they were resigned to him leaving them behind.
Sesshoumaru could barely keep his rage in check. Kagome’s scent was mixed with demonic aura and it rolled off of her. If he hoped to save her, he needed to get her to Daisuke as soon as possible. When the fox demon’s village came into view, the lord ascended, landing in front of the healer’s house and drawing the attention of the residents.
The older demon emerged from his home to see an unconscious and pale female in his lord’s arms. “What happened?” he asked as he ushered them in and closed the door. He motioned for the demon to place her on the bedding that was prepared for emergencies.
“It is miasma,” Sesshoumaru explained, laying Kagome down. He took a step back but lingered over her as Daisuke moved to sit next to the woman. “Naraku poisoned her. I am not sure how long she was exposed,” he stated, wanting to pass along the information he held.
The fox nodded as he pulled the cloth aside, checking her vitals then tilting her head back. Daisuke noted the bruising around her neck before moving to grab ingredients from a shelf. “Her breathing is good and she doesn’t have any crushed bones. I’m going to mix a little bit of levane with paliran and sporanorphine,” he explained. “It will nullify the toxin as well as sedate her for the pain.” He explained as he poured varying amounts of each into a wooden bowl. Sesshoumaru watched the fox as he worked, though eyes flashed in the direction of the unconscious female.
The opening of the door drew the attention of both as Inuyasha stood in the frame. The half-demon glanced around the room before spotting Kagome on a cot near the back wall. Sesshoumaru blocked his path when he tried to move to her. “Get out of my way,” he spit out, letting a low growl erupt. He was not in the mood for the stoic mask his brother wore but to others, it was clear the elder was upset.
“You will not interfere,” he spoke, refusing to let him pass. It was obvious to Sesshoumaru that her life was hanging by a thread and though he had the option of using Tenseiga, it was not something he liked to rely on as its use was limited to a single resurrection. At the moment, Daisuke was a more viable option. “Continue,” he ordered. The tension in the room was thick and uncomfortable.
Inuyasha watched the fox turn and continue mixing. “She’s a priestess,” he spoke to the smaller demon who stopped to stare at the brothers. “That’s gotta help!” The frustration and anger was apparent in his tone. Though the brothers held similar feelings, they expressed them very differently.
“It does,” he replied and reached for another bottle. “If I add aspazaprine, it will help kickstart the purifying.” He glanced at Sesshoumaru who nodded for him to continue. Daisuke poured a generous amount into the bowl and finished grinding the medicine before adding it to the pitcher of liquor. “We need to get three tablespoons into her,” he explained as he turned with it in hand.
Sesshoumaru nodded and faced Inuyasha. “He will heal her. You need to leave now.” He took a few steps closer in an attempt to push his brother out but he stood firm and shook his head in refusal. “You do not have a choice, Inuyasha.” His tone was hard and it reminded him of his father’s when he would not budge from a position but this would not be something that he needed to see, and they did not want to chance him interrupting.
Daisuke spoke up because he saw another conflict on the horizon. “It is best for her. If she wakes, the fewer individuals around, the better. She’ll be in agonizing pain and will need her privacy,” he explained gently, in hopes that he’d reach the young half-demon. It was hard to think clearly when emotions were involved.
Inuyasha stared at the fox, letting his words sink in before nodding. He looked to Sesshoumaru then turned around and walked out, shutting the door behind him. He would give them room to heal Kagome but he wouldn’t let his brother completely push him out. It was his job to protect her and he wasn’t going to relinquish that to Sesshoumaru. Several hours passed before the door opened. Daisuke stood, weary from exhaustion, as the group gathered around him. “How’s she doing? Can I see her now?” Inuyasha earnestly asked, letting the questions roll out of his mouth.
The fox demon held up his hand and nodded before anyone else could throw more inquiries at him. “The medicine seems to have worked but she is still at risk. It’s best to let her rest for now,” Daisuke told them. “She is being moved into the fortress and Lord Ses-”
Inuyasha darted forward and grabbed the demon’s collar, lifting him off of his feet. “What!? Where is Kagome?” he demanded. The growl rumbled from his chest and vibrated through to the healer. Daisuke kept his cool, not wanting to antagonize the half-demon.
“Inuyasha!” Miroku and Sango exclaimed as the monk laid a hand on his friend’s arm. “Let him finish,” he softly spoke, trying to calm him. They didn’t need his anger to cloud the situation more than it already was. Both wanted answers and would only get them if Sesshoumaru allowed their entry. Sango looked to Miroku then shifted into Inuyasha’s line-of-sight. His eyes focused on her before dropping his hold but he didn’t set back.
The fox nodded and shifted his clothing. “She needed privacy and more care than I can provide. I don’t have the space to keep her. Lord Sesshoumaru agreed to provide the room and aid so I will still be able to monitor her until she has fully recovered.” Daisuke shifted aside to let Inuyasha enter and Miroku let go as he pushed past the demon. “She should be settled in a few hours. She’s scheduled for medicine every six, and it’ll put her to sleep so the window for consciousness is narrow,” he explained, giving them the essential information. He wasn’t instructed to keep it to himself and didn’t see the harm in sharing it.
Inuyasha stopped and pivoted on his heel when the fox volunteered the information. His jaw clenched and he moved out of the shelter, storming toward his brother’s home. He wanted answers and he would get them, one way or the other. When he was at the entrance, Inuyasha didn’t hesitate to throw open the front gates, bypassing the gawking servants. Guards stilled their approach when they recognized the silver mane and red cloth of their lord’s younger brother. They had been forewarned of his visit and instructed to let him pass. The half-demon ignored them as he stalked down the hallway that lead to the bedrooms. When he rounded the corner, Inuyasha spotted Sesshoumaru gently closing a door.
The lord turned to see his brother rushing toward him. “She is asleep and you are not going in now,” the demon told him. Inuyasha’s inability to keep his cool was not what Kagome needed. It was up to Sesshoumaru to protect her and it was a duty he intended to fulfill. Her life depended on it. “She needs to heal.”
“You’re not keeping Kagome away from me!” Inuyasha barked at him as blocked the entrance. He knew it was bad and didn’t want to hear what she needed. The anger in him was boiling over. He needed to see Kagome. Instinct was telling him to push past his sibling and ignore what Sesshoumaru was saying. He knew that was a bad choice but couldn’t help himself as he shoved his brother and growled. “Get out of my way!”
Sesshoumaru stood his ground, keeping his temper in check. He knew Inuyasha was trying to bait him and refused to fall to his level. “You need to control your emotions. This is not the time to behave like a child,” his tone expressed the impatience that he had with Inuyasha but he had to remember that restraint would be required. He did not want to upset Kagome when she woke.
Inuyasha set his jaw, biting back the anger, and tried to keep the rumble low. “Hn. I’m not a child, and you want me to control myself like you?” he asked, pointing at him and showing the disgust on his face. “You don’t have a mask,” he scoffed. “You just don’t give a shit about anyone or anything. All you care about is how powerful you are,” Inuyasha spat out. “I’m not going to let you use Kagome as a pawn.”
It was obvious to Sesshoumaru what his brother’s intentions were. The anger was clouding his mind, hindering his judgement. “I believe I am very clear when I am displeased,” he replied and moved toward him. “And I am being clear now. You can not see her. You can not protect her. You do not deserve her nor her loyalty and you will not take her,” he spoke, emphasizing the words. “Nevertheless, I will not bar you from staying or seeing her when she wakes. I will not do that to her.” Sesshoumaru had let Inuyasha prod him into a response though it was not the one he had expected and it was more than the lord intended to say. He knew he had revealed something which he had not meant to.
The half-demon let out a loud growl, swinging at his brother who was able to dodge the fist with a backstep. “I knew that you did something to her,” Inuyasha barked, throwing another punch. He sidestepped it too. It was worse because Sesshoumaru chose to keep his mouth shut knowing her lack of memory would cover his actions. He couldn’t let Kagome out of his sight again. “I’m not going to let you take advantage of Kagome.”
“What have you been doing, little brother?” Sesshoumaru countered, catching Inuyasha off-guard. He was using her emotions to manipulate her into doing what he wanted. “Sneaking off to see that dead priestess while leaving Kagome vulnerable,” he continued when silence was his answer. His sibling was frozen when he heard him speak her name for the first time. Sesshoumaru rarely referenced humans using their names. “Getting your-”
“Fuck you,” Inuyasha cussed, cutting the demon off. “You don’t know what you’re talking about,” he told him, drawing his sword. Sesshoumaru quickly moved, knocking him onto the floor in one strike. He looked up, wiping the blood from his lip. “I’m not moving until I know Kagome is safe, no matter what you say,” he replied, standing his ground. “And if you ever touch her again, I’ll kill you,” he said, showing his teeth. Inuyasha would keep his word. He couldn’t leave her again.
His remark cut the last string of restraint he held for his brother. Sesshoumaru shifted to stand over him. He could not leave her unguarded, it was not safe. Inuyasha could not see his error. “Stay out of my sight,” he spoke coldly before he turned and disappeared into the room behind him, leaving the half-demon alone on the floor.
